Stages of Prenatal Development
1)
The endoderm layer- will develop into internal organs & glands
Endoderma-
Stage of the Embryo/Etapa del
Embrión
2) The ectoderm layer- become the parts of the body that
maintain contact w/ the outside world:
• Ectodermo- la capa externa del embrión; se convierte en el
pelo, la capa externa de la piel, y el sistema nervioso.
• 3) The mesoderm layer- muscles, cartilage, bone, sex organs
(reproductive sys), & the heart (circulatory sys).
• Mesodermo-La capa media del embrión; se convierte en
sistema reproductivo , los músculos, los huesos, y sistema
circulatorio.
 Amniotic sac- watertight membrane filled w/ fluid…
Amnios- la bolsa de liquido que envuelve el embrión….
 The placenta-organ through which the organism/mother.
Placenta- la estructura a tráves de la cual los alimentos y
desgastos se intercambian
The Prenatal Environment/
El Ambiente Prenatal
• The umbilical cord-links the organism to the placenta; it
serves as a filter (diseases, germs, impurities)…
Cordón umbilical- La estructura que conecta el embrión/el feto,
con la placenta;
Stage of the fetus/ Etapa del feto
• The main changes for the fetus are to develop further the
already formed organ structures & increase in size & weight
• From 3- 4 mos.,
• By 4th mos. mother
• By 4th mos:
- lanugo and covers the body
- vernix is secreted
Lanugo- Es pelo largo y fino que cubre el cuerpo del feto
Vernix- Es una substancia que protégé la piel del feto durante el
desarrollo
• The age of viability- when the fetus is likely to survive outside
the womb…
• La edad viable- el período a partir de 28 semanas después de
la concepción, cuando el feto puede ser capaz de sobrevivir
fuera del útero.
Procedures to monitor growth
• Ultrasound- high-frequency sound waves are bounced off of
the fetus’s body which produces an outline of the soft tissue
(Ultrasonido- Procedimiento médico que utiliza ondas acústicas
para producir un imagen del feto)
• Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)- a needle is inserted into the
placenta, chorion cells are removed as a genetic screening of
the fetus.
• Muestra de vellosidad coriónica- Procedimiento medico en el
cual se obtiene y se analiza una muestra del tejido fino del
corion
• Amniocentesis-a needle is inserted through the mother’s
abdomen into the amniotic sac.
• La Amniocentesis-Procedimiento medico en el que se obtiene
y es analizada una muestra del líquido amniótico.
