La conferencia ofrece a los participantes la oportunidad de discutir y compartir los resultados
de sus investigaciones en relación al fenómeno de las migraciones internacionales desde
el sur global hacia el norte global, así como las propuestas políticas destinadas a hacer del
mundo, tanto en el norte como en el sur global, un lugar “socialmente sostenible”. El desarrollo
sostenible es una idea que tradicionalmente se ha orientado a la consecución del equilibrio
medioambiental a nivel mundial. No obstante, la práctica basada en esta idea se ha centrado
generalmente en la promoción de un modelo de desarrollo económico para los países postcoloniales que ha conservado su tradicional papel complementario o subsidiario respecto a
las economías del norte, sin prestar demasiada atención a los graves desequilibrios sociales
y medioambientales que existentes en estas economías y en sus relaciones con las postcoloniales. Actualmente han surgido nuevas propuestas, como los Objetivos de Desarrollo
Sostenible de la ONU, que pretenden solucionar las insuficiencias de la idea y la práctica
general del desarrollo sostenible mediante el establecimiento de nuevos objetivos sociales y
medioambientales a nivel global tanto para el norte como para el sur en los que se reconoce
de forma clara la interconexión norte-sur y la necesidad de equilibrio entre los aspectos
económicos, medioambientales y sociales. Sin embargo, este esfuerzo se ve obstaculizado
por problemas urgentes y de gran envergadura, como por ej. conflictos armados, pobreza
estructural y los flujos migratorios masivos que provocan, sin olvidar la permanencia de las
limitaciones estructurales tradicionales que han hecho fracasar esfuerzos similares en el pasado.
Estos problemas serán debatidos por los participantes en dos mesas redondas y una
sesión de trabajo, precedidas de las aportaciones individuales de expertos e investigadores
de Mauritania, Marruecos, EE.UU., Alemania, Italia y España. La conferencia servirá
también de plataforma de presentación y discusión del proyecto de investigación “La
integración socio-económica de los trabajadores inmigrantes en el sector del aceite
de oliva en la provincia de Jaén”, desarrollado en la Universidad de Jaén con el apoyo
financiero del Instituto de Estudios Giennenses (ref. P I+D - IEG 2014 Ref. RFC/IEG 2014).

This conference will offer participants an opportunity to discuss and share the results of
their research on the interrelated issues of international migrations from the global South
to the global North and the attempts to make the world, both in the North and the South,
more “socially sustainable”. Sustainable development has traditionally been understood as
an idea geared toward the safeguard of an environmental balance worldwide. Its practice,
however, has tended to focus on the promotion of the development of post-colonial countries
as economies complementary or subsidiary to Western economies. This has been done
with no or very little regard to the colossal environmental and social imbalances that were
originating in the latter. Today, proposals like the UN Sustainable Development Goals attempt to
redress the past shortcomings of the idea and practice of sustainable development by setting
ambitious objectives of social justice and environmental respect for both North and South,
crucially recognizing the interconnection between the economic, the environmental and the
social. This struggle is, however, facing serious and urging problems (like armed conflicts,
structural poverty and the resulting massive migration flows), as well as the continuation of
the structural limitations of previous efforts that might critically hinder the chances of success.
Drawing on the contributions of invited professors and researchers from Mauritania, Morocco,
U.S.A., Germany, Italy and Spain, these questions and other closely related issues will be discussed
in this Seminar by all participants in two round tables and an open session. The Conference aims
particularly at presenting the results of the research project on the “Social integration of immigrant
workers in the olive oil sector in the province of Jaén, Spain”, carried out by the University of Jaén
with the funding of the Instituto de Estudios Giennenses (ref. P I+D - IEG 2014 Ref. RFC/IEG 2014).
