The Port of Vigo, the First Fishing Port for Human Consumption in the World Over 750,000 tons of fresh fish annually make The Port of Vigo one of the main fishing ports in the world. It is not only a case of fresh seafood, but of its great business activity, its refrigeration capacity of over 650,000 cubic meters, and its strategic location for the key markets of Italy, Portugal and France, which consolidate The Port of Vigo as the “First fishing port for human consumption in the world”. I n fresh seafood fishing “no-one can compete with us”, Abel Caballero Álvarez, President of The Port of Vigo, says frankly. He explains, “in fresh seafood fishery Vigo is bigger than the rest of Spain put together. For example, A Coruña produces 25,000 tons. We produce 750,000” The cold storage capacity installed exceeds 650,000 cubic meters, a figure far superior to the second fishing port in Spain and which situates Vigo among the first ports in the world. “We have a refrigeration network of great capacity, which is able to generate storage and frozen fish sales with whatever destination may be required whenever this is necessary. This only happens in Vigo, perhaps in the whole world. That is what makes us so attractive”, adds Caballero Álvarez. The Port of Vigo has a very special quality system. No fresh or frozen fish is sold without guaranteed traceability (who, how, when and how did it arrive at the sale point). Fish is exported to countries like Italy, Portugal and France. For the last 50 years the fresh fish auctions have maintained sales of between 60 and 90,000 tons, and they have the best quality fish, crabs and other crustaceans, molluscs, squid and octopus, destined also to canning factories, restaurants and foodservice businesses. Due to the limited fishing grounds in the seas near our port, businesses from Vigo started high sea fishery decades ago, in far away seas, which is why they had to build freezer fishing boats. On this subject Caballero Álvarez explains: “Frozen fish fishery was invented in Vigo. Such an important part of the world’s food system was invented here. The total volume of fresh, salted and frozen seafood processed in the last year was 800,000 tons, making Vigo “The first port in the world in seafood for human consumption in the world”. Over the years, The Port of Vigo has grown between 4 and 5% yearly; taking into account its production volume (750,000), this figure is very high. The Port of Vigo is always at the cutting edge. The President of the Port comments in this respect that, “We are studying a labelling system with an electronic chip that reacts to any loss in the cold chain over the permitted times. The label reads ‘Port of Vigo: Quality’ and the moment the cold chain is broken, the word ‘quality’ disappears. Greater quality is increasingly demanded, and we want to be world leaders. We probably already are, and we would like to continue to be so in the future”. Expected investments for the coming years will exceed two hundred million euro, allowing us to attend with all the guarantees for success, the quality and service demands which a competitive and globalized world requires of us. The most noteworthy of these investments are those aimed at promoting general freight goods traffic and tourist cruises, and those aimed at improving the port-city integration located in the central area of our port, like the study that is being carried out at present to create an air-transport company to take fresh fish all over the world. “In this case, we would be the only fishery port in the world with an air transport terminal included, well perhaps after New York, but well…the idea of comparing our port to New York suits me very well’ concluded Abel Caballero, President of The Port of Vigo. 27
