Chapter 4: Big metropolis and its infrastructures- Big metropolis innovative urban
planning and city management
ABSTRACT
"Environmental issues are a pending subject of our society. In that way, the inadequate
management of Urban Solid Wastes appears as a problem that requires a solution in
most of urbanizations in argentinean territory (World Bank-2007-Environmental
Evaluation of USW in Argentina”).
The compost on lines was studied as an alternative of management of waste of Mar del
Plata, using organic fraction of USW and wood chip (bulking agent), evaluating the
process during summer and winter (relations waste:bulking agent 1:1, 2:1 and 1:0)
mixing as necessary to keep aerobic conditions. Evolution parameters were registered in
the field and in the laboratory (physico-chemical and bacteriological analysis) from
solids and leaches. The results of winter experiment are presented (2009), while summer
test is still in process. The data confirmed the feasibility of the process in the weather
conditions and USW quality of the examined area.
