Amerigenics, initially established using personal resources of the founders, has recently acquired funding from the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. to apply the company’s Universal Figerprinting Chip (UFC) technology in microbial identification. The UFC was conceived and initially worked on by three of the company founders: Dr. Rogelio MaldonadoRodriguez, Dr. Alfonso Mendez-Tenorio (faculty at EBCB/IPN) and Dr. Kenneth Beattie in Tennessee, President of Amerigenics, Inc. (See separate presentations on the UFC by each of these three authors). The technologies, future plans of the company, and roles of the founders will be described. Amerigenics can be considered as a model for how Mexican and U.S. researchers can form a commercial enterprise with limited resources and attract government financing to expand their research partnership and create scientific and commercial development opportunities for all participants.
