Summer Reading
Lectura de Verano
Dear Students,
The Windham Public Schools and the Willimantic and Windham libraries are inviting you to
read and dream this summer. The theme for the
summer reading program is “DREAM BIG”.As
you read, you may learn about others who had
dreams come true. You might read about an
astronaut going to the moon, an engineer designing a robot, or an athlete becoming an
Olympian. Please go to your local libraries. They
will have fun activities all summer long. The
staff at the libraries will help you find interesting
books. Along with this book list, you will be
given a Summer Reading Passport. Each time
you finish a book, write down the title. If you
are at the library, have one of the librarians
stamp it for you. Please read every day! Have
a great summer and “DREAM BIG”.
Estimados Estudiantes,
local. Tendrán actividades divertidas durante
todo el verano. El personal de las bibliotecas le
ayudará a encontrar libros interesantes.

My Life as a Book by Janet Tashjian
The Potato Chip Puzzles by Eric Berlin
Summer's finally here, and Derek
When puzzle addict Winston Breen
Fallon is looking forward to pelting
the UPS truck with water balloons,
climbing onto the garage roof,
and conducting silly investigations.
But when his parents decide to
send him to Learning Camp,
Derek's dreams of fun come to an
end. Ever since he's been labeled a "reluctant
reader," his mom has pushed him to read "real"
books - something other than his beloved Calvin &
Hobbes. As Derek forges unexpected friendships
and uncovers a family secret involving himself (in
diapers! no less), he realizes that adventures and
surprises are around the corner, complete with
curve balls. (880L)
and his best friends head to an allday puzzle hunt with a $50,000
grand prize, they’re pumped. But
the day is not all fun and games:
not only do they have a high-strung
and highly competitive teacher
along for the ride, but the puzzles
are hard even for Winston, the other schools'
teams are no joke, and someone in the contest is
playing dirty in order to win. Trying to stop this mystery cheater before it's too late takes an already
tough challenge to a whole other level. . . .
Packed with a variety of fun puzzles to solve, this
fast-paced sequel will pull readers right into the
action from start to finish. (650L)

Powerless by Matthew Cody

Superheroes soar in this promising
debut and they're kids! Twelve-yearold Daniel, the new kid in town, soon
learns the truth about his nice but
odd new friends: one can fly, another can turn invisible, yet another
controls electricity. Incredible. The
superkids use their powers to secretly do good in
the town, but they're haunted by the fact that the
moment they turn thirteen, their abilities will disappear along with any memory that they ever had
them. Is a memory-stealing supervillain sapping
their powers? The answers lie in a long-ago meteor
strike, a World War II-era comic book ( Fantastic
Futures, starring the first superhero, Johnny Noble),
the green-flamed Witch Fire, a hidden Shroud
cave, and possibly, unbelievably "powerless" regular-kid Daniel himself. Superhero kids meet comic
book mystery in this action-filled debut about the
true meaning of a hero. (800L)
