Juan A. González, desde la Fundación Miguel Lillo – Instituto de Ecología – de Tucumán,
informa del proyecto de rescate de Chenopodium quinoa (“quinua”) como una alternativa
alimentaria y productiva para las comunidades de media y alta montaña del Noroeste
Argentino. Además por tratarse de una especie que posee resistencia al stress hídrico y
que puede desarrollarse en ambientes marginales y que posee una alta capacidad de
asimilación fotosintética (máximo de 30 a 32 micromolees/m2/seg), puede ser un excelente
sumidero de Carbono a nivel regional y una alternativa a los cultivos tradicionales que se
desarrollan en zonas de montaña. Nuestro interés radica en contactarnos con potenciales
interesados para colaboración a distancia y fuentes de financiamiento para profundizar el

Juan A. González from the Miguel Lillo Foundation –Institute of Ecology— in Tucuman,
reports on the project to rescue Chenopodium quinoa (“quinoa”) as a productive and
alimentary alternative for high and medium elevation communities in the Argentinean
northwest. Because of its high resistance to water stress it can develop in marginal areas.
The plant also has a high capacity for photosynthetic assimilation (max 30-32
mmol/m2/seg), and can thus become an excellent regional plant for Carbon sequestration
as alternative crop for mountain areas. Our interest is a contact with interested colleagues
for distant collaboration and with funding sources in order to deepen our study of Quinoa.
