Resumen: La presente tesis, se enmarca historiográficamente en el
campo de la Historia de las Instituciones Docentes, y su objetivo es el estudio de
los orígenes y primeras tres décadas (1957-1988) de vida de la Escuela de
Profesionales Sanitarios del Hospital San Rafael de Madrid. Este periodo abarca
sus dos etapas iniciales: la primera como escuela de Ayudantes Técnicos
Sanitarios (A.T.S.), vinculada a la Universidad Central, y la segunda, a partir de
1978, como unidad docente de la Escuela Universitaria de Enfermería de la
Universidad Complutense de Madrid. En esta escuela se impartieron durante
estos años las titulaciones de A.T.S., de la Especialidad de Fisioterapia y de
Diplomado Universitario en Enfermería, según las reglamentaciones respectivas.
A lo largo de sus capítulos, se van analizado los aspectos más relevantes sobre
antecedentes, contexto profesional, proceso de gestación, actividad docente y
discente, capital humano, instalaciones y vida cotidiana de la escuela. Los dos
capítulos iniciales se dedican a trazar la línea evolutiva de las profesiones de
Enfermería y Fisioterapia, hasta llegar a su situación en el siglo XX, y, más en
particular, se compendian los jalones históricos seguidos por la formación de
profesionales sanitarios en el ámbito de la Orden Hospitalaria de San Juan de
Dios. En el tercero se ofrece una sucinta crónica de la creación y desarrollo del
Hospital San Rafael de Madrid, en el que se fundó y ha permanecido la escuela.
El capítulo cuarto aborda el nacimiento del centro y su etapa como escuela de
A.T.S. masculinos (1957-1978), con un inicio exclusivo para alumnos religiosos
y su pronta apertura a los seglares, así como la implantación de los estudios de
Fisioterapia en 1960. El quinto y último capítulo se ocupa de los cambios que
conllevó la nueva situación de la escuela como unidad docente de la Escuela
Universitaria de Enfermería de la Universidad Complutense (1978-1988).
Completándose esta etapa con los pasos que llevaron a la escuela hacia su
integración en la Universidad Pontificia Comillas de Madrid.

Abstract: The present thesis takes place within the historiographic field
of the History of Teaching Institutions. Its objective is to study the origins and the
initial three decades (1957-1988) of the history of Health Care Professionals
School of “San Rafael” Hospital of Madrid. This period takes two stages of the
school in. The first one as a Technical Healthcare Aides (“A.T.S.”) School, linked
to the Central University of Madrid (named Complutense University in 1970), and
the second one, since 1978, as a Teaching Unit of Complutense University
School of Nursing. Throughout these years, the studies of “A.T.S”.,
Physiotherapy and Nursing were taught, according legislation in force. Along the
thesis chapters, we are going to analyse the main aspects regarding precedents,
professional context, development process, teaching activity, human resources,
facilities, and daily life in the School. First and second chapters are devoted to
Nursing and Physiotherapy professions evolution up to current situation in 20 th
century, including a special section that summarized historical stages of
vocational healthcare professionals training managed by the Hospitaller Order of
Saint John of God. The third chapter offers a brief chronicle about the creation
and development of San Rafael Hospital of Madrid, where the School was
founded and remained up to now. The fourth chapter raises the birth of the School
and its stage as a male school of Technical Healthcare Aides and
Physiotherapists (1957-1978). The fifth and last chapter deals with the deep
changes that leads the School to its new status as a Teaching Unit of the
Complutense University School of Nursing (1978-1988). This stage ends with
those steps which drove the School towards its linking to Comillas Pontifical
University.
