La nueva sede de iGuzzini Illuminazione Ibérica SA en Barcelona, ha sido galardonada como EDIFICIO DEL
AÑO 2011 en la categoría de Edificios Corporativos e Institucionales que otorga anualmente Archdaily
[www.archdaily.com], la plataforma web dedicada a la arquitectura más visitada e importante del mundo.
El edificio, obra de Josep Miàs, centraliza las actividades de iGuzzini Illuminazione en la península Ibérica,
tanto a nivel logístico como empresarial, por lo que supone un proyecto que aglutina programas diversos. Por este
motivo, el proyecto conjuga arquitectura, complejidad, paisaje y tecnología.
La nueva sede se localiza al lado del cruce viario de las carreteras AP-7 y C-16, del ámbito metropolitano de
Barcelona, dentro del término municipal de Sant Cugat del Vallès. El edificio se compone de dos partes, que
corresponden a sus diferentes funciones: una baja, extensa, semienterrada y sin luz natural, envuelta en hormigón
visto, la otra esférica y acristalada, flotando en el paisaje.
Aprovechando el desnivel de la parcela, la plataforma inferior contiene en su interior el almacén logístico, el
aparcamiento, el showroom, el auditorio, el teatro de la luz, una sala de presentaciones y las instalaciones. Todos
estos ambientes necesitan oscuridad, para poder experimentar y exponer la luz artificial.
La superficie superior de la plataforma es en realidad un suelo técnico exterior cableado, formado por una
serie de paneles móviles de diferentes acabados, que permiten la flexibilidad necesaria para poder montar varias
configuraciones del showroom exterior. Por encima de la plataforma, en precario equilibrio dinámico, surge la
parte más representativa del complejo, de forma esférica deformada. En ella se encuentran las oficinas, despachos
de dirección y zonas de investigación.
El edificio de oficinas se construye alrededor de un patio de luz en el cual se desarrolla un complejo sistema
estructural formado por cinco mástiles metálicos. Al llegar a la parte superior este pilar reticulado se une a través

de cables a tracción con otros diez elementos verticales a tracción que recogen el límite exterior de los forjados.
De esta forma, todo el edificio queda “colgado” de este único pilar central. La doble fachada, hacía el exterior, y
hacia el patio interior, completamente vidriada y formada por carpintería de acero y cristales de protección solar,
permite ver el entorno exterior 360º. La superficie de cristal se cubre con un protector solar formado por una
estructura tridimensional metálica sobre la cual queda tensado el tejido que a la vez refleja la radiación en su cara
exterior y permite una extrema permeabilidad visual. Este sistema constructivo de fachada ligera, que en la sección
norte desaparece, por no ser necesario, se adapta perfectamente a la geometría del edificio, apareciendo solo en
las zonas de la esfera (cenit, sur, este y oeste) solicitadas por la radiación solar.
Durante el día, desde el exterior, el edificio se presenta como un casquete opaco, que, por un lado, refleja el
cielo, y por otro, en la fachada textil, dibuja un perfil esférico punteado. Desde el interior, en cambio, la
percepción es diametralmente opuesta, ya que el espacio se convierte en un interior-exterior continuo. Durante la
noche, estas cualidades se invierten. Gracias a la luz, el edificio esférico se transforma en un elemento luminoso
que muestra su interior, perceptible desde todos los ángulos de las vías rodadas que lo circundan•
The new iGuzzini Illuminazione Ibérica SA Headquarters in Barcelona, has been awarded as BUILDING OF THE
YEAR 2011 in Institutional Buildings Category which is given annually by Archdaily [www.archdaily.com], the most
visited and important architectural web platform of the world.
The building, by Josep Miàs, centralizes all the activities of iGuzzini Illuminazione in the Iberian Peninsula,
regarding from logistics to business development, which makes it a very diverse project. For this reason, the building
has to come to an agreement between architecture, complexity, landscape and technology.The building is located
between AP-7 and C-16 highways (Barcelona metropolitan roads).
The building has two parts, each with a different function: one is low, extensive and underground, with no
natural light and built in concrete; the other is spherical and with a glass shell, floating over the landscape.
Taking profit of the slopes of the ground, the platform contains the logistic warehouse, the parking, the
showroom, the auditorium, the light theatre, a conference room and climate and system mechanics. All these spaces
need darkness, so as to show the characteristics of artificial light.
The surface of the platform is, in fact, a completely equipped outdoor raised floor, covered with different panels
which offer the needed flexibility to set up various displays for the outdoor showroom. Over the platform, with an
uncertain dynamic equilibrium, stands the more representative area of the complex, a slightly distorted sphere. In this
volume, general and management offices are found as well as investigation areas.
Actually, the offices are built around a light patio, where the structure is developed: a single pillar formed by five
metallic masts. The end of these masts is joined with cables to other ten vertical elements which fix the exterior limit
of the slabs. Therefore, the whole building remains hanged only from the central pillar. The offices’ façade, covering
the external volume and the inner façade of the patio, is a great glass shell. Thus, from the offices, a complete 360º
panoramic can be seen. The glass façade is covered over the sunniest surfaces with a solar protector made of a
three-dimensional metallic structure, where a special solar fabric is tightened. This textile façade is capable of
reflecting the radiation while allowing a great visual permeability. Thanks to its flexible geometry, the solar protection
can be very well adapted to the shape and volume of the building.
During the day, from the outside, the building appears like an opaque volume, which reflects the sky on the
northern part, and is profiled as a pointed spherical volume on the southern. From the inside, however, the
perception is completely different, since the space has no interruption between interior and exterior.
During the night, all these qualities are inverted. Thanks to light, the sphere turns to be almost like a lighthouse,
showing its interior in a complete transparency from every corner of the roads which surround the plot •

/ About Josep Miàs
Josep Miàs obtuvo el título de Arquitecto en 1992 por la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de
Barcelona, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (ETSAB, UPC). Desde 1990 hasta 2000, trabajó en la oficina de
Enric Miralles como arquitecto asociado. En 2000, fundó MiAS ARCHITECTS, su propia oficina. Su trabajo,
desarrollado precisa e intensamente, ha recibido varios premios. Ejerce de profesor de Arquitectura y ha impartido
conferencias en toda Europa y en Estados Unidos.
Su trabajo abarca desde la escala más pequeña del detalle hasta la comprensión de cualquier actuación
arquitectónica como semilla de ciudad y urbanidad. Alguno de sus proyectos más emblemáticos son: la Sede
Social del Club de Golf de Fontanals de Cerdanya, el nuevo Mercado de la Barceloneta, la reforma global del
Casco Antiguo de Banyoles, la sede de iGuzzini Illuminazione Ibérica SA en Sant Cugat del Vallès, el Mercado de
Rubí (mercado, oficinas del Ayuntamiento, plaza y parking) y las obras del Tibidabo (Funicular y Teatro de
Marionetas Herta Frankel).
Actualmente, las obras en construcción son: edificio de oficinas en 22@ en Poblenou (Barcelona), Centro
Terapéutico en Arenys de Munt, el puente peatonal para Palafolls y edificio de viviendas en Torre Baró (Barcelona).
Josep Miàs obtained the title of Architect in 1992 by the Superior School of Architecture of Barcelona, Technical
University of Catalunya (ETSAB UPC). From 1990 to 2000 he worked in Enric Miralles’s office as an associated
architect. In 2000 he created MiAS Architects, his own office. His work, intensely developed as a craftwork, has been
awarded several times. He has taught Architecture and has given lectures in Universities all over Europe and the US.
His works include from the closest look of the detail to the comprehension of every architectural action as a seed
of urbanity. Some of his most emblematic projects are: Fontantals Golf Club (Pyrenees), new Barceloneta Market
(Barcelona), the global project for the Old Town of Banyoles (Girona), the new iGuzzini Illuminazione Ibérica S.A.
Headquarters in Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona), Rubí Market (market, Town Hall offices, square and parking)
and the works in Tibidabo (Funicular Station and Herta Frankel Puppet Theatre).
Now, other projects are being built: Plug & Play Office Building in 22@ Poblenou (Barcelona), Health Centre in
Arenys de Munt (Barcelona), Pedestrian Bridge in Palafolls (Barcelona) and an apartment building in Torre Baró,
Barcelona.
