MONICA CASADEI and ARTEMIS DANZA
Graduated in Philosophy at the University of Bologna with a dissertation on Plato and Dance, after a competitive
career in rhythmical gymnastics, Monica Casadei studied classical ballet and modern dance, at first in Italy and then at
The Place in London; she finally chose Paris as the city to take up her residence in. The eastern contamination derived
from sojourns in the East and the practice of the martial art Aikido have been decisive in her studies. She attended in
Paris the Académie des Arts Martiaux et Arts Contemporaines directed by André Cognard; at the Académie Autonome
d’Aikido Kobayashi Hirokazu she achieved the level of 2° dan in Aikido and a teaching degree in Aikishintaiso. In
these years she was also performer and dancer for several French companies, but two artists really influenced her
choreographic training: Pierre Doussaint and Isabelle Dubouloz.
In 1994 Monica founded the Artemis Danza Company in France and she became artistic director and main
choreographer. In 1997 she moved to Italy and from 1998 to 2007 she was in residence at Fondazione Teatro Due –
Teatro Stabile of Parma and Reggio Emilia. Until today she has produced 30 creations, for a stable team of 15 dancers,
whose musician and composer is Luca Vianini, assistant choreographer and repeater Elena Bertuzzi, Company’s
photographer is Fabian, videomaker is Emanuele Cervellini and Aikido’s Teacher Annick Lemaire Shihan, in addition
to other dancers and artists identified specifically for the new productions.
Since 2005 Monica Casadei has devoted herself to the realization of “Artemis Incontra Culture Altre” (Artemis meets
other cultures), a project of some Company’s artistic residences abroad, choosing South America as first stage, in three
different travels to Brazil (2005), Cuba (2006) and Mexico (2007). Since 2008 the attention was directed to the East, at
first with residences in India, in 2009 in Vietnam, Chorea and above all Japan, in 2010 in Indonesia, Singapore,
Philippines and Malaysia and in 2011 in Russia and in 2012 Africa in particular Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and south Africa.
. From these intense travel’s experiences has emerged each time a rich cultural production articulated in shows,
publications, videos, reports, exhibitions and workshops.
2011 sees the birth of the ambitious project Corpo a Corpo Verdi, a dance proposal of the most famous Verdi's operas:
the first chapter Traviata debuted at Teatro Comunale di Ferrara in 2011 (2011) and Rigoletto was presented in 2012
at the Théâtre de Suresnes Jean Vilar in Paris.
In 2013, in occasion of the celebration of Bicentenary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner, this project
will see a new chapter with the creation called: “La doppia note – Aida e Tristan”, that will emphasise the particular
connection between the two authors. Usually opposite, Verdi and Wagner will meet through the body in dance,
in this common nocturnal dimension. The debut is planned at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, coproduced by
Fondazione Teatro Comunale di Bologna.
Since 1997, Monica Casadei has also designed the choreography for the following theatre and opera shows.
Since 2002 she is artistic director of Parma’s dance season “La Danza del III Millennio” (Dance of the 3 rd Millennium)
(that has taken place at Teatro Due – Teatro Stabile of Parma and Reggio Emilia until 2006 and since 2007 at Teatro
delle Briciole – Solares Fondazione delle Arti); from 2002 to 2005 she was also artistic director of Festival “Corpi
Multipli” in Lugo di Romagna (in collaboration with Fondazione Teatro Rossini) and from 2004 to 2006 of “La Danza
altrove” at Teatro H.O.P. Altrove in Genova.
In training and promotion, Monica Casadei promotes and supports the work of young authors, organizes seminars,
workshops and postgraduate courses and further training for dancers and actors and creates initiatives such as open
rehearsals and meetings to acquaint the public with dance’s language.
Artemis Danza Company is supported by the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Cultural Activities, by the
Emilia-Romagna Region – department of Culture and European Culture, by Parma’s Province and Parma’s
Municipality. In 2007 Artemis was also a member of the WDA-World Dance Alliance Europe under the auspices of
IDC-ITI/UNESCO.
