ace unas fechas me reunía con unos colegas odontopediatras de países alejados
de nuestro entorno. Nos preguntábamos hacia donde se encamina la Odontopediatría en
la actualidad y su futuro más cercano. A pesar de vivir en entornos diferentes del nuestro, muchos de ellos parecían de acuerdo en que en la actualidad y quizá derivado de la
mejor calidad de vida y de asistencia sanitaria, la necesidad de tratamientos dentales en
niños nacidos en condiciones de riesgo, con problemas médicos generales o con discapacidades establecidas, era cada vez mayor.
A su vez, presentíamos que nuestros jóvenes licenciados podían tener en el futuro
grandes carencias formativas en muchas áreas de la medicina y la salud, que les impidieran valorar en su justa medida el riesgo que pudieran entrañar sus tratamientos en estos especiales casos.
Por otra parte, cada vez encontramos mayor número de compañeros, con años de profesión a sus espaldas que derivan de una forma automática al paciente infantil cuando este
tiene una edad o situación clínica que les “supera” en el amplio sentido de la palabra.
Los odontopediatras recibimos, como todos reconocéis, los pacientes infantiles con
un grado de complejidad alto. Lo anteriormente citado nos obliga a estar necesariamente al día de los conocimientos necesarios para poder llevar a buen puerto cada caso.
Parece claro que los objetivos asistenciales y de formación en Odontología deberían
de ir de la mano.
Encontrar en nuestro ámbito una formación continuada y postgraduada adecuada al
perfil de cada candidato es una materia ardua. Los aspectos meramente mercantilistas se
confunden con la verdadera calidad formativa en algunos casos.
Desde la SEOP pretendemos, de una forma verdaderamente incansable, ofrecer los
mejores profesionales capaces de trasmitir su experiencia profesional reconocida nacional e internacionalmente.
Este año contamos, en este I Congreso Ibérico de Odontopediatría, con primeras figuras en la docencia de la odontopediatría internacional.
Entre ellos, y cumpliendo el objetivo que desde el año 2006, nos impusimos en la SEOP
para formar a nuestros miembros en la atención odontopediátrica a los niños con necesidades especiales, el Dr. Márcio da Fonseca impartirá un curso acerca del enfoque clínico de los niños con problemas clínicos comprometidos. Nos acercará al mundo de los
niños con problemas en Oncología, los diferentes problemas orales derivados de la terapia adecuada para tratar su enfermedad y cómo podemos enfocar desde ese punto nuestro tratamiento dental.
Los niños extraordinarios precisan dentistas extraordinarios. Los odontólogos dedicados a la infancia debemos ser flexibles en cuanto a nuestros planteamientos y estar
siempre preparados para afrontar los retos que cada paciente nos manifiesta.

A
few days ago I got together with some Pediatric Dentistry colleagues who
were from distant countries. We asked ourselves in what direction Pediatric Dentistry was currently going in, and what the near future was going to be like. Despite
living in rather different surroundings to ours, many seemed to agree that today, and
perhaps as a result of a better quality of life and health care, the need for dental
treatment for children born with risk factors, or generalized medical problems or
with disabilities, is growing. We sensed that our young graduates could have large
training deficiencies in many medical and health areas, which could prevent them
from evaluating properly the risks that treatment for special cases entails. Moreover,
an increasing number of our colleagues, with years of experience behind them, automatically refer child patients of a certain age or with a particular clinical situation
that is “beyond them” to other professionals. As pediatric dentists we attend, as you
will all acknowledge, child patients who often require highly complex treatment.
And this obliges us to keep our knowledge up to date, in order to deal with each of
these cases successfully.
It would appear that the objectives regarding care and training in dentistry go
hand in hand. But finding suitable continuous post-graduate training in our sector
that suits every candidate’s profile is an arduous task. And in some cases aspects that
are merely commercial get mixed up with the true quality of the training.
The SEOP is striving to get the best professionals, who have been recognized both
nationally and internationally, to transmit their professional experience. We will
have at the first Iberian Pediatric Dentistry Congress to be held this year, leading international figures in Pediatric Dentistry teaching. Among them will be Dr. Márcio
da Fonseca who will give a course focusing on children with serious clinical problems. We aim to meet the objectives set in 2006 which was to train our members in
dental care for children with special needs. He will draw us into a world of children
with oncological problems, and he will show us the different oral problems that arise
from the therapy for their diseases, so that we can focus our dental treatment from
this angle.
Extraordinary children require extraordinary dentists. As dentists dedicated to
children, our outlook has to be flexible, and we need to be ready to meet the challenges that each patient presents us with.
