The Kidney Transplant Team
There are many people at the transplant center who work to make a transplant successful.
Each person on the "transplant team" is an expert in a different area. The transplant team
includes all or some of the following professionals:

Clinical transplant coordinators have responsibility for the patient's evaluation,
treatment, and follow-up care.

Transplant physicians are doctors who manage the patient's medical care, tests,
and medications. He or she does not perform surgery. The transplant physician
works closely with the transplant coordinator to coordinate the patient's care until
transplanted, and in some centers, provides follow-up care to the recipient.

Transplant surgeons perform the transplant surgery and may provide the followup care for the recipient. The transplant surgeon has special training to perform
transplants.

Financial coordinators have detailed knowledge of financial matters and hospital
billing. The financial coordinator works with other members of the transplant team,
insurers, and administrative personnel to coordinate and clarify the financial
aspects of the patient's care before, during, and after the transplant.

Social workers help the patient and their family understand and cope with a
variety of issues associated with a patient's illness and/or the various side-effects of
the transplant itself. In some cases, the social worker may perform some of the
financial coordinator duties as well.

El Equipo de Trasplante de Riñón
Hay muchas personas en el centro de trasplante que trabajan para lograr que un trasplante
sea exitoso. Cada persona del "equipo de trasplante" es experta en un área diferente. El
equipo de trasplante incluye a todos o algunos de los siguientes profesionales:

Los coordinadores clínicos de trasplante tienen por responsabilidad las
evaluaciones, tratamientos, y seguimientos del paciente.

Los médicos de trasplante son doctores que manejan el cuidado del paciente, sus
exámenes, y medicamentos. Él o ella no realiza la cirugía. El medico de trasplante
trabaja en colaboración con el coordinador de trasplante para coordinar el cuidado del
paciente hasta que sea trasplantado, y en algunos centros, proveen cuidado de
seguimiento al paciente.

Los cirujanos de trasplante realizan la cirugía de trasplante y pueden proveerle al
paciente atención de seguimiento. El cirujano de trasplante tiene entrenamiento
especial para realizar trasplantes.

Los coordinadores financieros tienen conocimiento detallado de asuntos financieros
y de facturaciones del hospital. El coordinador financiero trabaja con otros miembros
del equipo de trasplante, seguros medicos y personal administrativo para coordinar y
esclarecer los aspectos financieros del cuidado del paciente antes, durante y después
del trasplante.

Los trabajadores sociales ayudan al paciente y su familia a entender y enfrentar una
variedad de temas relacionados con la enfermedad del paciente y/o los varios efectos
secundarios del trasplante en si mismo. En algunos casos, el trabajador social también
puede llevar a cabo algunas de las funciones del coordinador financiero.
