Greetings from the garden, Saludos de el jardín,
We had a nice response to our appeal for more bodies in the garden this week, and what a
difference it makes! Your involvement in the garden is hugely appreciated by so many people,
so thank you and please keep coming! We really need a lot of energy and people to finish out
the season. Again, no skills are required, just a willingness to pitch in and make a positive
difference in your community.
Hemos tenido una buena respuesta a nuestro llamamiento para obtener más personas en el
jardín de esta semana, y la diferencia que hace! Su participación en el jardín es enormemente

Speaking of pitching in, a huge thanks to Billy, Roxanne, and everyone at the Shot Clinic for the
awesome help on Friday to move the shed! We had about 10 people lifting it in unison (it's
heavy!) to shift it onto the pallets Mark set up, for stability and to prevent moisture damage over
time. Thanks to our wonderful shed architect Korrin for coming by to fix the door as well. No
more sag! I'm still waiting for Billy to carry out his threat, I mean idea, to paint a crescent moon
on the door, since he initially thought it was an outhouse.
Hablando de apoyar una enorme gracias a Billy, Roxanne, y todos en la Shot Clínica por su
gran ayuda el viernes para mover el cobertizo! Nosotros tuvimos unas 10 personas que
levantaron al mismo tiempo (es pesado!) Lo pasamos, a las paletas que Mark puso para la

We invite you to join us to prepare the garden for winter. We also need leaves, which we use to
cover the garden beds. If you are interested, please call Kathleen (612-340-9209, English) or
Silvia (612-724-7457, Spanish) so we will expect you. Tuesdays 5 – 7, Saturdays 2 – 4 pm.
Bagged leaves can be left in back near the composters. Thank you!

SATURDAY SUMMARY

keeping things going!

TUESDAY SUMMARY
Tuesday was a great day in the garden! Sara B and her sons Emmet and Frankie joined us for
the first time, though they've been cheering us on since the start. Wilbur and Chandra, who are
new to the neighborhood, also came for the first time. Penny, Pilar, Brian, Laura, Guthrie and
Laura, Silvia, and Kathleen were also present. We pulled out peppers, tomatoes, and squash
plants, covered those areas with rich compost we made this year, and covered that with leaves.
Come Spring, those areas will be weed-free and the soil improved, for a great start of the 2012
garden season! Laura Boeringa continued planting garlic, 100 cloves in all . The 7 households
each went home with an ice-cream bucket overflowing with red, yellow and green cherry
tomatoes, tomatillos, and chili peppers. We shared the bounty with Jamie, our generous
landlord. We had an additional 5 gallon bucket of big green tomatoes too!

El martes fue un gran día en el jardín! Sara B y sus hijos Frankie y Emmet se unierón a
nosotros por primera vez, a pesar de que nos han estado animando desde el principio. Wilbur y
Chandra, que son nuevos en el barrio, también vinieron por primera vez. Penny, Pilar, Brian,
Laura, Guthrie y Laura, Silvia, y Kathleen también estuvieron presentes. Sacamos(

verdes, tomatillos y chiles. Compartimos la generosidad con Jamie, nuestro generoso dueño
del lugar. Tuvimos un cubo de 5 galones de tomates verdes grandes también!

What's left? Garlic planting and shed moving are done! 1. Draw the current garden, as a
reference for next year. 2. Remove annual plants (not strawberries, raspberries, perennial
flowers and herbs, cold-tolerant kale and broccoli) and cover the beds with compost and leaves.
3. Store tools in the basement, in bins to stay dry. Determine if we need more. Empty rainbarrels, store upside down or in basement. 4. Plan a harvest party if we want one. 5. Pick up
free horse manure if we want it. 6. Discuss how to motivate a large-enough group to commit to
the full season, what to do the same or different next year, and a new coordinator for next year.

“Beecyclist”: Kristy and Dustin, two local beekeepers, are looking to coordinate with
community gardens. They asked, do you want to play an intricate role in the survival of the
honeybee? Would you like to teach your community more about where their food comes from?
Would you like to support two beekeepers managing bees on bicycles? Let's discuss whether
we'd like to learn more about this opportunity.

Compost. We continue to grow our own compost for next year. This really increases our
garden’s productivity! Let us know if you want to help.

NEXT GARDEN DAYS
Our next garden days are SATURDAY 10/15, 2 – 4 pm and TUESDAY 10/18, 5 - 7 pm. Plan:
Bring a water bottle for yourself, bags / containers to take home the harvest. See “what's left”
above for what we'll work on. We need coordinators! Please sign up to coordinate when you
can, so we can all participate in the garden leadership. On Tuesday, those who register for the
Hub canning class will head to Waite House at 5:45 pm. Let's discuss who wants to attend the
Local Foods Resource Hub, 1st Annual Fall Gathering Tuesday, October 25, 5:30 - 8:00 pm, so
we can decide if we want to meet at the garden and travel there together next Tuesday.
