GLOSSARY OF SPECIALIZED TERMS USED IN THE DICTIONARY (GLOSARIO DE
TÉRMINOS ESPECIALIZADOS USADOS EN EL DICCIONARIO)
back-formation – The shortening of a word to derive an apparently primary form, e.g. bludge
from bludger. Sp. Derivación regresiva: Derivación en sentido inverso, es decir,
acortamiento de una palabra, para formar un supuesto primitivo, por ej. bludge de bludger.
back slang – A word spelt backwords, e.g. enob for bone, tenuc, for cunt, etc. Though they are
attempted euphs., back sl. terms are not very common and may sound a bit facetious. Sp.
Argot inverso: Una palabra escrita al revés, por ej. enob por bone. Aunque pretenden ser
eufs., estas palabras no son de uso muy frec. y suelen tener carácter burlesco.
Black slang – Slang used by Black people in the USA. Sp. Argot usado por los negros en USA.
dysphemism – The substitution of an unpleasant or derogatory word or expression for a pleasant
or inoffensive one, which highlights its humorous or grotesque aspects, e.g. to hide the
sausage, for ‘to coit with a woman’. Sp. Disfemismo: Sustitución de una palabra o expresión
desagradable o peyorativa por otra agradable o inofensiva, que destaca aspectos
humorísticos o grotescos de la misma, por ej. ‘esconder la salchicha’, por copular con una
mujer.
ethnic slurs.- Dysphemisms used as jokes at the expense of certain nationalities, e.g. Irish
toothache, for ‘the erect penis’ and ‘pregnancy’.Sp. Calumnia étnica: Disfemismos usados
como chistes a expensas de ciertas nacionalidades, por ej. ‘dolor de muelas irlandés’, por
pene erecto o preñez.
euphemism – The substitution of an unpleasant or derogatory word or expression for a pleasant
or inoffensive one, which seems socially more acceptable, e.g. to ease nature, for ‘to
copulate’ or ‘to masturbate’. Sp. Eufemismo: Sustitución de una palabra o expresión
desagradable o peyorativa por otra agradable o inofensiva, que parece socialmente más
aceptable, por ej. ‘aliviar la naturaleza’, por copular o masturbarse.
gay bashing – Jargon which shows an attitude of physical or verbal assault against gays, e.g.
ass-pirate. Sp. Agresión física o verbal contra los gays: Jerga que refleja una actitud hostil
contra los homosexuales, por ej. ass-pirate, ‘pirata de culos’.
limerick – «A form of nonsense verse. Said to be from a custom at convivial parties, according
to which each member sang an extemporized ‘nonsense verse’, which was followed by a
chorus containing the words ‘Will you come up to Limerick?’ (the chief town of the county
of Limerick in Ireland)». (OED). Sp. Tipo de verso festivo que al parecer tiene su origen en
Limerick (Irlanda): en las fiestas y celebraciones en esta localidad era costumbre que cada
participante recitara unos versos festivos disparatados, seguidos por el estribillo ‘¿quieres
venir a Limerick?’
Lingua Franca- «A mixed language or jargon used in the Levant, consisting largely of Italian
words deprived of their inflexions». (OED). Sp. Lengua Franca: Lenguaje mixto o jerga
característica de los países del mediterráneo oriental, consistente principalmente en
palabras italianas privadas de sus inflexiones.
nonce word - A word made up for use only on a particular occasion, gen. modelles on a known
word, e.g. fuckathon. Sp. Palabra inventada para una ocasión determinada, gen. formada
por analogía con otra palabra conocida, por ej. fuckathon, por analogía con marathon.
Pig Latin - Name given to an invented language in which the initial consonant of each word is
transferred to the end of that word and a vocalic syllable- usually -ay added, e.g. untcay, for
cunt, uckfay, for fuck, etc. Sp. Nombre dado a un lenguaje inventado en el que la
consonante inicial de cada palabra se pasa al final de la misma, añadiéndose una sílaba
vocálica, gen. –ay, por ej. untcay, por cunt.
rhyming slang - A variety of sl. (orig. Cockney) in which a word is replaced by a phrase which
rhymes with it, e.g. cobbler’s awls for balls, almond rock for cock. They are often reduced
to their first part: cobbler’s, almond. Very popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Sp.
Argot rimado: Variedad de argot (orig. Cockney), muy popular a finales del siglo XIX y
principios del XX, en la que una palabra se sustituye por una frase que rima con ella, por
ej. cobbler’s awls por balls. Estas expresiones rimadas se reducen a menudo a su primera
mitad: cobbler’s.
Romany – The language of the gypsies. Sp. Romaní: Lengua de los gitanos.
rugby songs – Songs, usu. of a very bawdy nature, sung by rugby players after matches. Sp.
Canciones, gen. de carácter obsceno, cantadas por los jugadores de rugby tras los partidos.
spoonerism - «An accidental transposition of the initial sounds, or other parts, of two or more
words. From W. A. Spooner (1844-1930), an English clergyman renowned for slips of this
kind». (OED), e.g. to see a dog about a man for to see a man about a dog. Sp.
Transposición accidental de los sonidos iniciales, u otras partes, de dos o más palabras. De
un tal W.A. Spooner (1844-1930), clérigo inglés, famoso por este tipo de equivocaciones,
por ej. to see a dog about a man por to see a man about a dog
