GROUNDS
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Neuroscience or science of the brain constitutes an
interdisciplinary way to understand the fine
structure and the function of the human brain. This
area has gained significant interest during the last
decades, not only because of the basic knowledge
that it generates but also because it promises
improving our well being.
The average age and the size of our population
have grown considerably in the last two decades;
consequently pathologies of the mind have
increased. Therefore it is not surprising that some
disciplines that converge on Neuroscience like
Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biochemistry,
Neurogenetics,
Biophysics,
Pharmacology,
Developmental
Biology,
Mathematics,
Neurophysiology, Neuroanatomy, Neuropsiquiatry
and the Cognitive Sciences in general, have had a
high development in the last decades.
One of the most important challenges that science
faces nowadays is to understand how the different
levels of biological complexity work in order to
create the cerebral functions.
To apply to this Program, students need to have
an Academic Degree, Bachelor degree, Master or
equivalent academic training. The selection will be
made based on the analysis of academic and
professional records, letter of motivation and
interest, letters of recommendation, entrance
examination and a personal interview.
OBJETIVE
This program is designed to train students
interested in the development, structure and
function of the nervous system. The program’s
strengths are in Molecular Physiology, Sensory
Neuroscience, Neuronal Plasticity, Neuropathology
and Neurogenetics. The Doctor in Sciences with
specializing in Neuroscience will obtain knowledge
and ability to contribute significantly in an active
way - theoretical and experimentally - to the
development of Neuroscience. The student will be
able to propose, design and implement
experimental strategies to evaluate hypothesis and
he/she will be able to carry out investigation
independently at a high level on the nervous
system.

ENVIRONMENT
Our commitment is that both national and foreign
student accepted into the program will be funded
by the available scholarship program. Our
accreditation by CNA has allowed our students to
apply for CONICYT grants, and historically ~ 70%
of those accepted students receive one. Since
2002, University of Valparaiso has had a varying
number of scholarships supported by MECESUP
to ensure that students are enrolled in the program
full-time. From the second half of 2008 we have a
scholarship provided by the University of
Valparaiso. Students have access to laboratories
equipped for research training, a study room with
specialized texts, computers connected to Internet
and online access to a wide range of magazines
and books of the Library of National Institute of
Health in the United States.
An ongoing series of agreements with other post
graduate programs allow students to take elective
courses in other universities in Chile and abroad
as well as research internships. The Science
Faculty of the University of Valparaiso provides an
environment, with numerous activities in the
scientific and cultural field.
The program faculty provides Research and
Teaching opportunities at the highest level. The
Doctoral Program has a cooperative agreement
with the National Institute of Health in USA
(Graduate Partnership Program with NINDS),
which allows our students to perform research
stays in NIH laboratories, with restrictions, as part
of their PhD thesis. The program offers a double
degree agreement with the Scuola Internazionale
Superiore di Studi Avanzati of Trieste, Italy.
Program has the support of Fundacion Andes,
Millennium Iniciative and MECESUP for laboratory
equipment.
The department of Neuroscience, Neurobiology
and Developmental Plasticity of Valparaíso offer
their laboratories equipment for laboratory
rotations and theses work. Doctoral students may
participate
in
assistantships
in
practical
laboratories for students of different careers.
