Alvaro Joaquim Melo Siza Vieira nace en Matosinhos, Portugal, en 1933. Estudia en la Escuela de
Arquitectura de la Universidad de Oporto entre 1949 y 1955, terminando su primera obra en 1954.
Durante los años 1955 a 1958 colabora en el despacho del arquitecto Fernando Távora. Imparte clases
en la Escuela de Arquitectura de Oporto (ESBAP) entre 1966 y 1969, y en el año 1976 es nombrado Profesor
Asistente de Construcción.
Ha sido profesor en la Escuela de Arquitectura de Oporto y profesor invitado en la Ecole Polythéchnique
de Lausana, la Universidad de Pensilvania, la Universidad de Los Andes de Bogotá y en la Graduate
School of Design de la Universidad de Harvard como 'Kenzo Tange Visiting Professor'.
Ha obtenido el título de Doctor Honoris Causa por la Universidad de Valencia, España (1992), por la
Escuela Politécnica Federal de Lausana, Suiza (1993), por la Universidad de Palermo, Italia (1995), por
la Universidad Menéndez Pelayo de Santander, España (1995), por la Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería
de Lima, Perú (1995), por la Universidad de Coimbra, Portugal (1997), por la Universidad de Lusíada
(1999), por la Universidad Federal de Paraíba, Brasil (2000), por la Università degli Studi di Napoli
Federico II, Nápoles, Italia (2004), por la Universidad de Bucarest 'Ion Mincu', Rumanía (2005), y por la
Universidade degli studi di Pavia, Italia (2007).
Es miembro de la American Academy of Arts and Science, y miembro honorífico del Royal Institute of
British Architects, del American Institute of Architects, de la Académie d’Architecture de France y de
la European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
Alvaro Joaquim Melo Siza Vieira was born in Matosinhos, Portugal, in 1933. From 1949-55 he studied at the
School of Architecture, University of Porto. His first built project was finished in 1954. From 1955-58 he was
collaborator of the architect Fernando Távora. He taught at the School of Architecture (ESBAP) from 1966-69
and was appointed Professor of "Construction" in 1976.
He has taught at the School of Architecture of Porto and has been Visiting Professor at the Ecole Polytéchnique
of Lausanne, the University of Pennsylvania, Los Andes University of Bogotá and the Graduate School of
Design of Harvard University as 'Kenzo Tange Visiting Professor'.
