- In reference to the interview which aired on CNN en Español Dinero on March 9,
2011 “Todos mis comentarios dejaron traslucir un gran respeto hacia el pueblo Panameño, que
hizo un buen negocio con la incompetencia de los representantes y líderes políticos
estadounidenses. Mis comentarios felicitaron a Panamá y criticaron a los políticos,
embajadores y negociadores estadounidenses, que han demostrado una falta total de visión
comercial.”
“Mi mensaje no trató la entrega del canal a Panamá, que lo ha operado mucho mejor que
nuestros políticos. Se refirió a los contribuyentes estadounidenses que, durante más de un
siglo, invirtieron miles de millones de dólares para su creación y protección y no han visto,
como parte del trato, el rendimiento del capital invertido. Aplaudo al gobierno panameño
por lograr un excelente negocio y espero que nuestros negociadores aprendan una lección.”
“Asimismo felicito al pueblo panameño por su visión comercial al invertir miles de
millones de dólares en la ampliación del canal. Esta inversión ha contribuido
significativamente al crecimiento de la economía del país. Debido al crecimiento de la
robusta economía panameña, producto de este estímulo, he elegido a Panamá como el
primer país de Latinoamérica para instalar nuestro primer hotel y torre residencial. Además,
estoy analizando realizar una vez más el concurso Miss Universo en Panamá, en donde fue
un éxito rotundo en 2003. Panamá ha hecho un excelente negocio y por ello merece mi
respeto. Es más, si fuera ciudadano panameño, habría hecho lo mismo.” Donald J. Trump,

“All of my comments have paid great respect to the Panamanians people who made a great
deal in their negotiation against incompetent United States representatives and political
leaders. My comment was a knock against our U.S. politicians, ambassadors and
negotiators, who showed a total lack of business acumen, and was a compliment to
Panama.”
“My message was not about turning over the canal to Panama—which has done a far better
job running it than our politicians did—it was about the U.S. taxpayers, who over the
course of a century, invested billions of dollars in its creation and protection and did not
receive, as part of the treaty, a return on our investment. I applaud the Panamanian
government in striking a very good deal—and wish our negotiators would take a lesson
from it.”
“I also congratulate the Panamanian people for their foresight in investing billions of
dollars into the canal’s expansion. This investment has greatly contributed to the growth of
the country’s economy. It is because of Panama’s robust economic growth, resulting from
this stimulus, that I chose Panama as the first country in all of Latin America to open our
first hotel and residential tower. Additionally, I am now strongly considering again
bringing the Miss Universe contest back to Panama where we had great success in 2003.
Panama made a great deal and I respect them for that—in fact, if I were a Panamanian
