The Rising Sun of China
■
En China reside el origen de los tiempos y del
hombre. Así lo creen. Así te lo explican. Cuando
dialogas, te hablan de su vasto territorio como el lugar
del mundo donde tuvo lugar el nacimiento del hombre.
Antes, según su leyenda, fue Pan Gu quien separó el
cielo de la tierra. Quien transformó cada parte de su
cuerpo en el sol y la luna, en las estrellas y los cuerpos
celestes, en las montañas y los ríos. La humanidad, modelada desde su barro, la creó Nu Wa. Esta es parte de
la apasionante historia china que nos exige acercarnos
a ella para verla, tal como la cuentan, con los ojos bien
abiertos. Es la pasión de la experiencia china.
Como apasiona comprobar en las calles de este
inmenso país, las enormes similitudes entre su viaje y
nuestro viaje interior al alma de nuestros pueblos. Desde
que en 1992 se iniciara la gran renovación china, cuando Deng Xiaoping viajó por las grandes ciudades para
explicar la urgencia de apertura económica, el cambio
producido ha llevado de nuevo a este pueblo a liderar
el mundo.
Te lo advierten para que comprendas lo que pasa
en sus calles. De otra forma no lo podrías entender. Lo
dificulta su vasto territorio de más 5.000 kilómetros de
norte a sur. China exige elegir la visita de sólo algunos
puntos estratégicos si quieres comprender en poco
tiempo la diversidad de este inmenso país.
Explican que la economía libre de mercado y la economía planificada no son las diferencias esenciales entre
socialismo y capitalismo. Defienden que lo esencial de su
sistema es la emancipación y el desarrollo de las fuerzas
productivas, la erradicación de la explotación y el logro
del bienestar común. Son premisas sin las que no se
puede comprender su nueva larga marcha
que ha
convertido a Shanghái en la ciudad más
moderna del mundo, al tiempo que
conservan los jardines con los más
bellos imaginables ejemplares de
bonsáis del mundo en la ciudad
de Suzhou y los misterios de los
enterramientos de los emperadores
con los soldados de Xian. Imprescindibles los paisajes de Guilin con
sus caprichosas formaciones montañosas atravesadas por el río en el
que te sientes como un explorador
en medio de la naturaleza.
El sentimiento que resume la
experiencia china es el de la fascinación, como fascinante es el
descubrimiento de los grandiosos
palacios imperiales de la ciudad
prohibida a la que ya nos acercó El
último emperador. Todo nos ayuda
a comprender por qué el sol nunca
ha dejado de nacer por China.■

Man and the ages have their origin in China. That is what they
believe, and that is what they tell you. When you converse
with them, they speak of their vast territory as the birthplace of man.
Beforehand, according to their legend, Pan Gu had separated the
heavens from the earth and had transformed each part of his body
into the sun and the moon, the stars and the heavenly bodies, and the
mountains and the rivers. Humanity was then moulded from his clay
by Nu Wa. This is part of the enthralling history of China as they tell it,
which demands to be approached with our eyes wide open. For that is
where the passion of the Chinese experience lies.
In the streets of this huge country, it is stirring too to find that the
inner journey to its people’s soul is remarkably similar to ours. Since
China’s great renewal began in 1992, when Deng Xiaoping travelled
around its major cities to explain the urgent need to open up the
economy, the changes that have taken place have turned its people
once again into world leaders.
They warn you about all this so that you can comprehend what is
going on in its streets. Otherwise you could never understand. What
makes it so difficult is its vast territory stretching for more than 5,000
kilometres from north to south. To gauge the diversity of a country as
immense as China in a limited time, it is necessary to select just a few
strategic points to visit.
They explain that the essential difference between socialism and
capitalism is not that of a free market economy versus a planned
economy. They maintain that the essence of their system is the
emancipation and development of the forces of production, the
eradication of exploitation and the attainment of common welfare.
Only on these grounds is it possible to understand China’s new long
march, which has transformed Shanghai into the most modern of all
cities whilst preserving the gardens with the world’s most beautiful
bonsais in the city of Suzhou, and retaining the mystery of the burial
of the emperors with the soldiers of Xian. Not to be missed are the
landscapes of Guilin, their capriciously shaped mountains traversed by
a river where you feel like an explorer in the midst of nature.
The feeling that sums up the Chinese experience is one of fascination.
It is fascinating too to discover the grandiose imperial palaces of the
Forbidden City, of which we caught a glimpse in The Last Emperor. It
all helps us to understand why the sun has never ceased to
rise in China.■
