Foreign markets, which account for 57% of sales, were once again the main driver of growth in the sector, with
exports increasing by 3.6% to €32,000 million compared to 2013 and 40% higher than in 2007. Although exports
continued to be the main vector for growth in 2014, as in previous years they were not the only contributing factor
thanks to the start of a recovery in domestic consumption and demand, which helped to boost production of
consumer chemicals at the end of the year.
Meanwhile, imports grew by 1.1% to €35,110 million in 2014, meaning that the trade balance coverage rose to 91%,
nearly 20 points higher than in 2007.
Social contribution: Generating wealth and quality employment
The chemical sector, which has proven to be one of the Spanish economy’s most consolidated industrial sectors,
helps to create wealth by contributing more than €12,000 million in taxes and wages every year.
It has also been one of the leading sectors for employment creation during the last year. According to the most
recent figures in the Active Population Survey published by the National Statistics Institute, the chemical sector
created 10,100 new jobs during the last 12 months, directly employing 174,400 people in 2014 (annual average)
compared to 164,300 in 2013. This is equivalent to growth of 6.1%, compared to a 2.53% increase in the national
employment rate during the last 12 months (annual variation) according to the latest published data.
It is also quality employment, with permanent contracts accounting for 95% of the sector, compared to an average
of 85% for the industrial sector as a whole and a national average of 77%.
Key figures for the Spanish Chemical Industry

accounting for 24% of all R&D+i investments made by Spanish industry as a whole and employing 21% of all
