No llegó a 186.000 pesetas de 1929 el precio que tuvo que
pagar el Ayuntamiento de Calañas para que sus habitantes
pudieran disponer de un moderno mercado de abastos.
In 1929, the local government of Calañas had to pay almost 186,000 pesetas (1,118 Euros) for their inhabitants
to have a modern wholesale market.
El famoso arquitecto José María Pérez Carasa fue el encargado del proyecto de este edificio modernista que sigue los cánones del regionalismo arquitectónico y donde
predominan el ladrillo y el azulejo, quizás uno de los más
interesantes del patrimonio calañés.
The famous architect José María Pérez Carasa was the person in charge of the project for this modernist building, in
which brick and tiles predominate, and maybe one of the
most interesting of Calañas’ patrimony.
Pero más allá de sus características técnicas y sus dimensiones, que en nada debía envidiar a las de otros edificios
de las capitales, lo que de verdad importa es el modo en el
que cambió la vida del calañés.
Ahora, para poder acceder a todo tipo de artículos, solamente debía dirigirse a un único centro. El comerciante veía
así facilitada su labor reduciendo los costes en beneficio
directo del consumidor. Este, por su parte, sabía que en el
mercado de abastos tenía todos los productos al alcance
de la mano.
Pronto empezaría, de este modo, a convertirse en un referente no sólo económico sino social. En su entorno y dentro
de él se arremolinaba la gente pasando el rato, cerrando
tratos o charlando entretenidamente con los vecinos.
Con los años y la proliferación de supermercados muchos
tenderos se vieron obligados a echar el cierre relegando
este edificio a labores culturales para las que, involuntariamente, está perfectamente dotado.
But beyond its technical features and its dimensions, which
have nothing to envy to other buildings in capital cities,
what is really important the way it changed the life of the
people from Calañas.
Now, to have access to every kind of products, they have
to go to only one place. Traders saw how their work was
easier and their costs diminished for the direct benefit of
consumers. These, on their side, knew that the wholesale
market had everything close at hand.
This way, it soon started to become an economic and social
reference. Many people crowded round it and its vicinity
spending time, closing deals or chatting entertainingly with
neighbours.
After some years with the proliferation of supermarkets
many shopkeepers had to close leaving this building for
cultural events, for which, it is involuntarily well equipped.
