The University of Valladolid has constructed the LUCIA building (University for an Applied Research Centre) where it showcases the best achievements in various fields of sustainable architecture, assessed and rated by third parties. It could be defined, according to the European directive 2010/31/UE, as a near-zero energy and zero CO2 consumption building, and in fact the LUCIA building is, indeed, consumes zero energy and produces zero CO2 emissions, with an A energy certification has A and also has the highest standard of leaves in the green and platinum LEED certification. This article outlines the main strategies that have made it possible to achieve a building with these features at a very affordable price. The LUCIA building was funded by the Regional Government of Castilla y León (Technology Research & Development Infrastructure Programme) and the European Regional Development Fund. In the LUCIA building the University of Valladolid proposes to innovate and serve as a benchmark for its numerous centres in terms of energy efficiency and sustainable architecture, including social and economic aspects. This is considered to be an ideal opportunity for research in achieving almost zero energy consumption buildings according to Directive 2010/31/EU of the European Parliament, far surpassing their expectations. The basis for their achievement will be the coordination and consistency between bioclimatic design, the most efficient systems and technologies, and the use of renewable energy exclusively, including geothermal, solar and biomass as a local energy product with potential to reduce energy dependence on fossil fuels and promote a more self-sufficient economy. The energy of the area will be used - the sun on the building - and a local resource (biomass) will be operated exclusively for use in construction, for both air conditioning in its entirety and the production of electricity needed for the building. The use of biomass residue from treatment of plant mass from the pine seed and timber industry (woodchip), which is a surplus product in Castilla y León, has great potential in the region as a local job creator, so research into the use of this resource extensively in the building will bring benefits in many ways. Apart from the purely energy-based aspects, the building will be researched in terms of use and typological flexibility; other resources such as water and plant systems; reducing energy demand; use of natural lighting, etc, and overall implementation of sustainability criteria in the building, including its social and educational potential. Several different strategies have been adopted for the project as regards the spatial and formal architectural layout of the building. These strategies aim at reducing energy demand, the use of renewable energy in situ, improving the systems’ efficiency and other aspects of sustainability. Now let’s look in detail at each of these strategies. The characteristics of the site require long walls facing south-west and north-east. The thermal transfer coefficients used in the building envelope compared to those stipulated by Spanish Building Regulations (CTE) and ASHRAE (ASHRAE 2007) are significantly better: These insulation coefficients are a key factor (U=0.17 W/m2K on facades, and U= 0.15 W/m2K on the green roof) and will restrict loss through transfer and therefore lead to a reduction in energy demand. The use of materials with low environmental impact for insulation (100% natural from wood) is compensated for by insulated heating. One further aspect to be taken into account in this section is the effect of thermal inertia achieved in the structure of the building itself (reinforced concrete), particularly with the green roof, which covers 73.5% of its surface. Daylighting Natural lighting, as well as having beneficial effects on health and wellbeing, reduces electricity demand for artificial lighting. The orientation and self-shading of windows can increase the solar factor of glass, favouring the best possible natural light without impacting on indoor thermal conditions in summer. This solution was combined with increased natural lighting in interiors by extensive use of light wells from Solatube Daylighting Systems and skylights over stairways. The benefits obtained by this system are excellent: they are static elements, which simply use the effect of reflecting the incident light, so they do not require power to operate. According to the simulation run, of the 146,190 kWh per year which the reference building (ASHRAE criteria) would need, in the case of LUCIA, this is reduced to 74,790 kWh (about half) thanks to these Solatube Daylighting Systems. Compactness The building has a form factor of 0. 37 m-1 for its 5,920m2 conditioners, representing a ratio which is hard to improve FuturEnergy | Junio June 2014 ros en las orientaciones soleadas. (Photo 1) Using this system, 89% of the surface openings face south and east, achieving thermal gains in winter, and a selfshadowing effect in summer, thereby reducing the cooling load, whilst at the same time ensuring Foto | Photo: Carlos Barrena natural light. On its longest sides, the resulting surface resembles a “saw-tooth”. According to simulations, this design strategy produces a 24% reduction in the building’s cooling loads. Compactness involves optimizing the ratio between the envelope surface and volume of air-conditioned air, reducing the first. Eficiencia Energética: Centros Educativos | Energy Efficiency: Educational Centres Foto | Photo: Diego Tamayo Aparcamiento abierto | Open parking Open parking design Apart from benefits for the senses (an open parking lot is much nicer than a closed one), a decision of this type avoids the need to force the use of ventilation, artificial lighting, security units, fire-fighting equipment and anti CO2 unit, thus reducing charges on power and expenses and making it possible to have vegetation and filter paving, promoting biodiversity, filter paving. RENEWABLE ENERGY Trigeneration system with biomass The use of a surplus resource in the region where the building is constructed – biomass – has a considerable socio-economic impact that opens the way to energy independence. The potential for biomass use in the region is very great in this sector and is largely untapped. It is also expected that projects like this contribute to increased research on local energy independence, social improvements and job creation, boosting the effectiveness of existing systems for the use of biomass in buildings, something still in its early stages, according to Intelligent Energy Europe (IE EUROPE, 2007). The decision to use biomass is further limited to two aspects: reducing CO2 and encouraging the development of systems that enable this resource to be used in competition with fossil fuels. A technology developed by the Cidaut Foundation has been chosen for small scale cogeneration from biomass gassification. This technology uses a gassification reactor with parallel streams that converts woodchip into a combustible gas (producer gas) which, after being treated, is used in reciprocating internal combustion engines to co-generate electricity and heat. The system provides 100kW of electric power in engines and over 180 kW of thermal energy using cooling water from the engines and the enthalpy from their exhaust. Thermal energy is extracted from the system in the form of water at 90°C which is essential for the efficient use of the absorption FuturEnergy | Junio June 2014 Compacidad 53 Eficiencia Energética: Centros Educativos | Energy Efficiency: Educational Centres Foto | Photo: Alfonso E. Caño Planta de gasificación de biomasa Biomass gassification plant tra conectado a la red eléctrica, posee una caldera de biomasa de apoyo y un disipador de calor que permiten adaptar el suministro energético a variaciones instantáneas de la demanda energética del edificio a lo largo de todo el año. Integración arquitectónica de sistemas fotovoltaicos machine located in the building. The 100 kWe electric power produced by the cogeneration system can meet annual electricity demands, and the 180 kWth heat generated on average meets the average thermal requirements for the absorption machine which provides cooling for the building. The system is connected to the mains, has biomass boiler support and a heat sink which adapts the energy supply to instantaneous variations in energy demand in the building throughout the year. Foto | Photo: Diego Tamayo This integration is done in three ideal areas (Photo 4): the type of double skin curtain wall on the south-east (common areas for relaxation) facade; and the two skylights over each of the staircases. The double-skin curtain wall has an annual output of 5,000 kWh of electricity and provides shading and a ventilated chamber during hot weather. To prevent possible overheating in the chamber, specific dampening solutions have been studied that can reduce the temperature by up to 4ºC. The skylights produce 5,500 kWh annually and the photovoltaic windows also allow filter the high incidence of natural light to the interior which assists air-conditioning in the building in summer. These skylights contribute to the positive renewable energy balance in the building and also drive research in this area. Geothermal This is used as a support system for ventilation and air conditioning in the building and involves the installation of geothermal pipes (known as Canadian or Provencal wells). With ground-air heat exchange these wells preheat or cool the air, depending on the season, prior to entry into the circuit. The energy equivalent of the system is 25,000kWh annually. It thus reduces power consumption on indoor air, and use of this system is now starting up on a major scale. www.futurenergyweb.es IMPROVING THE EFFICIENCY OF SYSTEMS 54 Lighting control Lucernarios con vidrios fotovoltaicos integrados | South-west elevation with double PV wall with built-in photovoltaic glass skylights The LUCIA building has a system of lighting control depending on occupation and level of natural lighting. The expected improvement is the adjustment of consumption to the needs of the time, therefore energy use will be exclusively required for artificial lighting. It also has a primary air conditioner with an A energy rating,, provided with plugfans (synchronous rotor) and variable flow operation with adiabatic humidification boiler and plate recoverer with 60% efficiency at 100% flow, taking external air or air from a system of Canadian wells (whichever is more convenient at the time), with F9 filtration efficiency due to the need of laboratories. Fancoil System The LUCIA building has a fancoil system with four pipes with two-way valves in hot and cold to work in variable flow water. They are connected to the KNX building control system, changing the temperature of indoor comfort when the rooms are occupied or empty, and switching themselves off when the room is unoccupied after a specified period. After each day in addition, comfort temperatures adjust themselves to the default settings, in this way avoiding excessive consumption due to changes in manual thermostat programming. Water pumping Pumping water in variable flow and with minimum consumption is possible thanks to the high energy efficiency FuturEnergy | Junio June 2014 MEJORA DE LA EFICIENCIA DE LOS SISTEMAS Tubos geotérmicos | Preparing the geothermal pipes on site. Bombeo de agua Finally, there is a sophisticated SCADA control system for the building, integrating the heat and cold plant, the water circulation systems and the consumption points inside the building, and controlling the operation automatically. The control system is in fact the main tool for energy saving in the building, and is fully programmable and adjustable to possible changes in use that may occur in the building. To achieve this there are power meters in the boiler, the co-generator, the chiller, and the DHW and absorption machine (accumulated energy values, instantaneous flow rate, power, etc., using an M-Bus protocol.). (by pulse count); or from 97 network analyzers distributed through the building (active, reactive, apparent power, phase voltages, frequency by ModBus integration). OTHER ASPECTS OF IMPROVING BALANCE OF SUSTAINABILITY Heat island Reduced heat island effect, using filter paving outside the building; intensive sedum type plant cover; native vegetation and deciduous trees on the estate, contributing to creating microclimates. Selection of construction materials There has been considerable selection of construction materials: low-environmental impact; low energy use; noVOC; recycled and reused as well as recyclable an reusable materials; methods which reduce as much as possible the waste produced during the building process (prefabricated, dry wall partition, etc); which provide for easy disassembly. As well as recycled materials, photocatalytic building materials have been used, based on applications of TiO2 which work with the environment, reducing the surrounding pollution, such as NOx. Waste management A further aspect taken into consideration is waste management during the construction phase as well as during the building’s use. The project includes a plan for studying all the waste generated during the building’s lifecycle, and the creation of compost from vegetable waste is also envisaged. Finally, the waste produced during future demolition of the building has also been studied with a view to securing the maximum possible recovery of the materials used. Water cycle Reducing the demand for potable water by 73% recovery of rainwater collected on the roof, and treating and recycling 100% of gray water for use in the sanitation system, also equipped with water-saving devices. The cover is plant, and rainwater is recovered for reuse in flushing toilets. The plants used are native and require no irrigation. The water from the laboratory is pre-treated before discharging into the network. Ha sido financiado por la Junta de Castilla y León (Programa de Infraestructuras de Investigación y Desarrollo Tecnológico) y el Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional. www.futurenergyweb.es Universal accessibility Improvement of devices and facilities for people with disabilities; Educational An extensive education and information plan for maintenance staff, users of the University and the general public has been produced and is being given to contribute to the knowledge of environmental issues relating to buildings. ZERO ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND ZERO CO2 PRODUCTION The design, implementation and use requirements have been established to constitute a zero energy building and zero CO2, according Directive 2010/31/ EU. This is achieved through two strategies: multiple design solutions that minimize the demand for energy, and secondly, it also incorporates a set of technologies to generate power from renewable resources, alongside use-control, selected with strict energy efficiency criteria, all of them produced in situ. The building’s bioclimatic design, increased insulation, passive ventilation, and other strategies, enable energy demand to be cut by over 50%. The final energy demand of the building is 81,82 kWh/m2 year (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, electricity and sanitary hot water). Eficiencia Energética: Centros Educativos | Energy Efficiency: Educational Centres Accesibilidad universal Foto | Photo: Carlos Arriaga Especially worthy of note among the power generating systems is a cogeneration system that uses lignocellulosic biomass as fuel, and which covers most of the building’s thermal and electricity demand, thus achieving an autonomy that can serve as an example for other buildings of the tertiary sector. In order to establish the building’s sustainable qualities, it has been evaluated using the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) method, obtaining the LEEDNC Platinum Certification, the highest possible rating. It’s also being evaluated through the Verde tool, (GBCe) which measures the saving achieved in terms of environmental impact, (equivalent kg of CO2, kg of SO2 on ground eutrophization, etc.), opting to the best records. The building entails a final investment of € 8.225.000 (VAT included), and covers a total built area of 7.500 m2.
