Not Getting Along
Fighting can become the status quo.
When kids fight at school, someone tries
to break it up, but in the end we know
they’re just kids. Fighting is what kids do.
During an election year the mudslinging
can get intense. There will be a few calls
for civility, but most of us shrug our
shoulders. There’s nothing we can do.
Fighting is what candidates do. Teens
and their parents, parents and teachers,
contributors to blogs, sometimes even
pastors and council members—some
groups seem to disagree by their nature.
It isn’t right, but fighting can become the
status quo.
The members of the early church had the
same problem. Many New Testament
letters indicate that the first Christians
believed in Christ, held high ideals, and
lived in community—but they didn’t always get along.
In one passage from the Letter to the
Ephesians, you can just imagine the spats
that provoked these words: “I urge you
to live in a manner worthy of the call you
have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one
another through love, striving to preserve
the unity of the spirit through the bond of
peace.” The readers had to be urged
toward those virtues because they were
not very evident.
Fighting should never be the status quo.
We have a more noble vision of community life. Our one Lord, one faith, and one
baptism summon us to be one body and
one spirit.

for staff parking at the rectory ($1500).

Efesios 4: 1-6
El No Llevarse Bien
Pelear puede convertirse en el status
quo. Cuando los niños se pelean en
la escuela, alguien trata de parar la
pelea, pero al final sabemos que son
sólo niños. La lucha es lo que los niños hacen. Durante un año electoral
la difamación puede ser intensa.
Habrá un par de llamadas a la civilidad, pero la mayoría de nosotros
encogemos los hombros. No hay nada que podamos hacer. Pelear es lo
que los candidatos hacen. Los adolescentes y sus padres, los padres y
maestros, contribuyen a los blogs, a
veces incluso los pastores y los
miembros del consejo y tantos grupos parecen estar en desacuerdo por
su naturaleza. No está bien, pero la
lucha puede convertirse en el status
quo.
Los miembros de la iglesia primitiva
tenían el mismo problema. Muchas
cartas del Nuevo Testamento indican
que los primeros cristianos creían en
Cristo, celebraban altos ideales, y
vivían en comunidad, pero no siempre se llevaban bien.
En un pasaje de la Carta a los Efesios, sólo se puede imaginar las disputas que provocaron estas palabras:
"Yo ruego que vivan de una manera
digna el llamamiento que han recibido, con toda humildad y mansedumbre, con paciencia, soportándose
unos a otros a través del amor, tratando de conservar la unidad del
espíritu en el vínculo de la paz ". Los
lectores tuvieron que ser empujados
hacia esas virtudes porque no eran
muy evidentes.
Pelear no debe ser nunca el status
quo. Tenemos una visión más noble
de la vida comunitaria. Un solo Señor, una sola fe, un solo bautismo y
nos convoca a ser un solo cuerpo y
un solo espíritu.
