From the Pastor’s Desk...
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
Last Thursday was the last day we saw His Holiness Benedict XVI as
the person sitting at the “Chair of Peter”. On Friday we witnessed
the first day of what's known as the "sede vacante," or the vacancy
between papacies. Much has been said in the news about Pope
Benedict XVI’s retirement. It is not my intention to comment on it,
but to give you some information about it.
El pasado jueves fuimos testigos del último día en que vimos su
Santidad Benedicto XVI como la persona que estaba sentada en la
"Silla de Pedro", y el viernes, el primer día de lo que se conoce
como la "sede vacante". Mucho se ha dicho en las noticias sobre la
renuncia del Papa Benedicto XVI y no es mi intención comentar
sobre ello, sino en darles algo de información sobre la misma.
The pope will leave vacant the “Chair of Peter” a chair represented
in the apse of the Vatican basilica as a symbol of the special mission of Peter and his successors to tend Christ’s flock. This chair is
also a sign of Christ’s authority, based on faith and on love as once
described by Pope Benedict. “The bishop of the Roman Church, in
whom continues the office given by the Lord uniquely to Peter, the
first of the Apostles, and to be transmitted to his successors, is the
head of the college of bishops, the Vicar of Christ, and the pastor
of the universal Church on earth. By virtue of his office he possesses supreme, full, immediate, and universal ordinary power in the
Church, which he is always able to exercise freely.” (Code of Canon
Law – Can. 331).
El Papa dejará vacante la "Silla de Pedro", una silla representada
en el ábside de la Basílica del Vaticano como un símbolo de la misión especial de Pedro y sus sucesores para cuidar el rebaño de
Cristo. Esta silla es también un signo de autoridad, pero de la autoridad de Cristo, basada en la fe y en el amor, descrita así alguna

Canon law also states: “If it happens that the Roman Pontiff resigns his office, it is required for validity that the resignation is
made freely and properly manifested but not that it is accepted by
anyone.” (Code of Canon Law– Can. 332). “When the Roman See
is vacant or entirely impeded, nothing is to be altered in the governance of the universal Church; the special laws issued for these
circumstances, however, are to be observed.” (Code of Canon Law
– Can. 335).
During the following days Rome will witness the conclave, a
meeting of the College of Cardinals convened to elect a new convened to elect a new Pope. The conclave has been the procedure
for choosing the pope for more than half of the time the church
has been in existence. At every conclave, the truth of Christ's
promise to Peter is reasserted: "On this rock I will build my Church,
and the powers of death shall not prevail against it" (Mt 16: 18).

Our 5th grade students provide a good reminder of what we are about during Lent on the Wall of
Welcome– we are on a path towards Jesus! Our hearts are centered on prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The students in all grades will work to bring in playground balls for the students in our
sister Diocese in the Dominican Republic. We are working to help the children in the D.R. grow in
strength of body and spirit through our generosity.
Nuestros estudiantes de 5to grado nos ofrecen un importante recordatorio sobre la Cuaresma en la “Pared de Bienvenida”- !estamos en el camino que nos lleva a Jesús!
Nuestros corazones se enfocan en la oración, el ayuno y la caridad. Los estudiantes de todos los
