In a cooperative venture between the parish Rosary Society and
our Parish Food Pantry at St Margaret Mary, we have instituted a
monthly food collection on the First Sunday of the month at all
Masses. Please bring only dried or canned foods (non-perishables).

help in carrying out the Corporal Works of Mercy in this era of
need. All women of the parish are welcome to join them in their

Prudence at the Polls

My dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,
The last two weeks we have been exploring our Catholic faith and the matter of political responsibility. We have established already
that the purpose of individuals coming together and forming a government is to serve a common good. Last week we spoke of “religious
freedom” as a lynchpin of any society. This week we will take up the question of social justice.
We ask ourselves where the candidates stand on how we as a people may best “make accessible to each what is needed to lead a
truly human life: food, clothing, health, work, education and culture, suitable information, the right to establish a family, and so
on.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1908)
Previously, we established that the dignity and sanctity of human life is the foundation for all other rights. Support of partial-birth abortion,
which can only be described as near infanticide, is in the minds of many disqualifying for the office of President of the U.S. Moreover, the Democratic Party Platform now calls for taxpayer funding of abortion. Taken together, these pose an almost insurmountable hurdle for any
Catholic voter that takes his or her faith seriously.
At the same time, we as Roman Catholics, do not believe that our responsibilities towards one another end after birth. Indeed, education and
healthcare are fundamental rights. Many Americans are being deprived of a quality education and many more are being crushed beneath the
skyrocketing costs associated with healthcare.
A vigorous private sector is essential in a liberal democracy. Schools instill values – secular, religious and irreligious. Support for voucher programs and tax credits are a lifeline for many families who are concerned with providing a quality education in an environment that
supports their own values and beliefs.
The costs of a college education seem entirely disproportionate. Many families and/or students are saddled with several hundred
thousand dollars in debt because of student loans. This places undue burdens upon those looking to start a career and a family. Some have
proposed creative policies that would help more students have access to American higher education.
With respect to healthcare, we must strive towards the goal of ensuring that all Americans have a minimum coverage of quality
health care. Yet, this goal has not been met. Furthermore, many working class families are burdened by the costs of many exchange plans. Our
government must work to alleviate this stress to families on the margins. At the same time, we strongly oppose the serious and ideologically
driven flaws in current law. Neither Catholic nor other faith-based institutions ought to be forced to cover any procedures they deem in direct
opposition to deepest held beliefs, such as funding for contraception, sterilization and abortion.
An area where the left and the right agree, but we have heard precious little about, is criminal justice reform. The greatest single exercise of force in a citizen’s life is imprisonment. We must demand that the curtain be pulled back on our prisons for all to see the systematized
violence and brutality of an industry more interested in punishment than rehabilitation, simply because it is more profitable. The American
prison industry must be deconstructed, and be replaced with true rehabilitation centers.
In his Encyclical, “Laudato Si” (On Care for Our Common Home), our Holy Father, Pope Francis, reminded us “I would point to the intimate relationship between the poor and the fragility of the planet, the conviction that everything in the world is connected, the critique of
new paradigms and forms of power derived from technology, the call to seek other ways of understanding the economy and progress, the value proper to each creature, the human meaning of ecology, the need for forthright and honest debate, the serious responsibility of international and local policies, the throwaway culture and the proposal of a new lifestyle.” (16)
Many Catholics fail to recognize our obligation to be stewards of the environment. This means that we must advocate for policies that
care for the environment at both a macro and a micro level. How can we not value clean air? Do we wish our children to suffer from chronic
asthma? Visits to the developing world are the evidence of the profoundly negative impact of carbon emissions upon quality of life. Should we
not be concerned also for those who manufacture the goods we consume? Not surprising, many of the same voices that resist “Green Policies”
also have little concern for the poor.
As so many of you know, I am particularly interested in migration issues. Pope Francis who visited the Greek island of Lesbos, where refugees
have come to escape violence in their home lands, reminded us, “We must never forget… that migrants, rather than simply being a statistic,
are first of all persons who have faces, names and individual stories.”
As a diocese that has for hundreds of years been home to immigrants, those with papers and those without, we as a nation must be
on the side of the stranger. Frankly, the language directed towards many immigrants throughout this election has been insulting with one candidate demeaning and alienating immigrants and offering no reasonable solution for those who wish to come to the United States legally. At
the same time, the other candidate has made unobtainable promises to immigrants, which might serve political purposes but also offers no
real resolution.
As we put out into the deep in our final analysis of the issues facing Catholic voters, we will explore the issue of the stability and security of a just order. In the meantime, we must continue to ask the Lord to bestow upon us all the virtue of prudence as we prepare to go to the
polls next week.

Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas en el Señor,
Ya hemos establecido que el propósito de los individuos está uniendo y formando un gobierno es servir a un bien común. La semana pasada hablamos de la "libertad religiosa" como un eje central de cualquier sociedad. Esta semana vamos a abordar la cuestión de la justicia social.
Nos preguntamos donde los candidatos sobre cómo nosotros, como un pueblo mejor pueda "facilitar a cada uno lo que se necesita para
llevar una vida verdaderamente humana: alimento, vestido, salud, trabajo, educación y cultura, información adecuada, el derecho a establecer una
familia, y así sucesivamente." (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica 1908)
Anteriormente, se estableció que la dignidad y la santidad de la vida humana es el fundamento de todos los demás derechos. Apoyo de

Muchos católicos no reconocen nuestra obligación de ser guardianes del medio ambiente. Esto significa que debemos abogar por políticas
que se preocupan por el medio ambiente, tanto en una macro y un nivel micro. ¿Cómo no valorar el aire limpio? ¿Queremos que nuestros niños
sufren de asma crónica? Las visitas a los países en desarrollo son la evidencia del impacto profundamente negativo de las emisiones de carbono en
la calidad de vida. ¿No deberíamos preocuparnos también para los que fabrican los productos que consumimos? No es de extrañar, muchas de las
mismas voces que resisten "políticas verdes" también tienen poca preocupación por los pobres.
Como muchos de ustedes saben, estoy particularmente interesado en las cuestiones de migración. Francisco que visitó la isla griega de
Lesbos, donde los refugiados han llegado a escapar de la violencia en sus tierras de origen, nos recordó: "No debemos olvidar nunca... que los migrantes, en lugar de simplemente ser una estadística, son en primer lugar de todas las personas que tienen caras, nombres y las historias individuales”.
Como una diócesis que tiene cientos de años sido el hogar de los inmigrantes, los que tienen papeles y los que no, nosotros, como nación
debemos estar en el lado del desconocido. Francamente, el lenguaje insultante dirigido a muchos inmigrantes a lo largo de estas elecciones con un
candidato ha sido degradante y alienar a los inmigrantes y ofreciendo ninguna solución razonable para aquellos que desean venir a los Estados
Unidos legalmente. Al mismo tiempo, el otro candidato ha hecho promesas imposibles de conseguir a los inmigrantes, que podrían servir para fines
políticos, sino que también ofrece ninguna solución real.
Al poner adentro en nuestro análisis final de los problemas que enfrentan los votantes católicos, vamos a explorar la cuestión de la estabilidad y la seguridad de un orden justo. Mientras tanto, tenemos que seguir para pedir al Señor que nos conceda toda la virtud de la prudencia,
mientras nos preparamos para votar esta semana.
JOIN US TO CLOSE THE HOLY YEAR OF MERCY
UNASE PARA CONCLUIR AL AÑO SANTO DE MISERICORDIA
Our Lady of Mount Carmel church was designated as a "Holy Door” church for the
Extraordinary Jubilee Holy Year of Mercy, proclaimed by Pope Francis. Well over
1600 people have signed our visitors’ registers during the year and likely an equal
number who visited did not sign. Mark the conclusion of this historic year with our
own Bishop Paul Sanchez as he closes the Holy Year and dedicates a commemorative plaque on Sunday, November 20 at our 5 PM Mass.
La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Monte Carmelo fue designado como una iglesia de
una "Puerta Santa" para la Santo Año Extraordinaria Jubilar de la Misericordia,
proclamada por el Papa Francisco. Más de 1600 personas han firmado registros de
nuestros visitantes durante el año y es probable que un número igual que visitaron
no firmaron. Unanse con nosotros para marcar la conclusión de este histórico año
con nuestro obispo Monsenor Paul Sánchez quien cierra el año santo y se dedica

We will begin our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive this weekend to
help the needy of our parish. We will place bins at the doors of
the Church for canned and box foods. No perishables or expired
food, please. If you wish to give a contribution instead, you may
do so by placing your donation in an envelope marked
“Thanksgiving Food Drive” or at the rectory. Thank you for your

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL/ CAMPAÑA CATOLICA ANUAL
We thank all those who have made a pledge to this year’s Annual
Catholic Appeal. As of October 31st, 2016, we have 261 Donors who
have pledged $57,671 towards our parish goal of $59,118. Over
$49,000 has been collected thus far. Pledge envelopes are still available at the church doors and in the rectory. Please remember we
need many new people to pledge this year if we are going to make
our goal. No pledge is too small and everyone can help our campaign succeed.

Católica Anual de este año. A partir del 10 de Octubre del 2016,

The Carmel Diamond Seniors will be having their Christmas Dinner
Party at Riccardo’s on December 8th, 2016 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.

VETERAN’S DAY
The Rectory Ofices of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Margaret Mary will be closed on Friday, November 11th, 2016 in
observance of Veteran’s Day. There will only be 1 mass that
day at 9:00am in the Upper Church.
PRAYER OF THE WEEK
We ask for blessings on all those who have served their
country in the armed forces. We ask for healing for the
veterans who have been wounded, in body and soul, in
conflicts around the globe. We pray especially for the young
men and women, in the thousands, who are coming home
from Iraq with injured bodies and traumatized spirits. Bring
solace to them, O Lord; may we pray for them when they
cannot pray. We ask for, echoing John Paul II, an end to wars
and the dawning of a new era of peace, As a way to honor all
the veterans of past wars.
Have mercy on all our veterans from World War II, Korea,
Vietnam, Iraq, Bring peace to their hearts and peace to the
regions they fought in. Bless all the soldiers who served in
non-combative posts; May their calling to service continue in
their lives in many positive ways.
Give us all the creative vision to see a world which, grown
weary with fighting, Moves to affirming the life of every
human being and so moves beyond war. Hear our prayer, O
Prince of Peace, hear our prayer. Amen.
