FROM THE “OGLE” OFFICE
DE EL PASTOR
Dear Friends,
Queridos amigos ,
the costs of our Church restoration effort, as it will be again for the
2012 ACA.Our Catholic mission of Evangelization requires divine
grace, human resources and adequate facilities. For the last three
and half years, our parish has continued the maintenance policies
articulated and initiated by Monsignor Sanchez, that is, to repair and
refurbish the essential structures of our seven parish buildings, all of
which are used for pastoral purposes. That program of repair has
been duly noted in our bulletin during that time, and you could hardly
miss the omnipresent scaffolds which indicated the almost continuous work that’s been done with your support. As that structural work
has gradually moved toward completion, for many months I have
been discussing with our staff, Parish Pastoral Council, Finance
Council and trustees the next stage: various ideas for the longneeded handicapped access and liturgical restoration of the interior
of our historic church. As you know our parish was founded in 1841
to serve all of Queens and Long Island’s Catholics, and the current
church was erected in 1871. It was enlarged somewhat in 1915, and
the lower church was activated around that time as well. A major
interior renovation was made in 1966, and smaller adjustments were
made in the 1980s and 1990s. Thanks be to God, the décor and furnishing of our church has maintained its dignity and impressive
beauty, thanks to all our pastors over the years and particularly to
the dedicated efforts and craftsmanship of Father Joe Pham and his
assistants. Yet at the same time, as with any series of ad-hoc repairs
made while maintaining other pastoral necessities (such as our beloved school), our church acquired some beautiful adornments, lost a
few others, and began show the wear and tear of renovations done
incrementally and without a cohesive master-plan. We are now in a
position to address many of those concerns, and it is my hope that
during the year 2012, we will be able to complete exterior repairs
and carry out a major upgrade and restoration of our church interior,
as a way of preparing for our 175th parish anniversary in 2016. The
really big item will be to provide handicapped access to the lower
church by means of an elevator, like the one built for the Institute
(Parish Center) two years ago. Another accessibility item will be to
enlarge the parking lot vestibule better to accommodate crowds entering and leaving the church and to provide more shelter in inclement weather. We also need to repair the granite front steps and retaining walls of the church, and replace its smaller flat roofs. On the
liturgical front, our discussions surfaced dozens of suggestions,
which we whittled down to a list of the most essential and practicable, both for liturgical, aesthetic and practical purposes. We hope to
carry through a unified style of adornment that is consistent with the
original Victorian Gothic style of our church. On the following page is
the list of items that we are looking at addressing during the coming
year, in the order that our various councils rated them cumulatively.
We are awaiting diocesan permissions and advice before entering
into a competitive bidding process. We’ll keep you posted as we
make progress. Toward this end, we are happy to announce that this
month we received a total of nearly $7,000 in over-goal monies that
you contributed for the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal all of which will
be directed toward
recursos humanos e instalaciones adecuadas.
pastorales (como nuestra querida escuela), nuestra iglesia adquirió
algunos adornos hermosos, perdidos unos cuantos y comenzó a
Esperamos llevar a
2012 ACA.

WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE
This Sunday we celebrate World Day for Consecrated Life. We recognize and give thanks for those who have consecrated
their lives to God and the Church through the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Some join a religious congregation or
a secular institute. Others remain single and make profession to God through the local bishop and are known as consecrated
virgins. The consecrated life is one way that men and women live out their baptismal commitment as followers of Jesus.
congregaciones religiosas o a institutos seculares.

or other qualified charity. This gift counts toward fulfilling your
required minimum distribution.
The distribution must be from your IRA, not a 401 (k) or other
retirement plan. However, consult with your financial or tax
advisor about the possibility of transferring funds from one of
these other plans to establish an IRA, with distribution to charity coming from the newly established IRA.
For more information about how you and the Church can
benefit from an IRA charitable rollover, contact the parish office or the Alive in Hope Foundation at (718) 965-7375.
