Dear Parent/Guardian:
Recently there has been growing media attention regarding skin infections in school, especially those
caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcal aureus (MRSA). In response to this public awareness, we
are making available to you information brochures published by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention. More information about MRSA may be found at their website: http://www.cdc.gov/mrsa
Skin infections are common in school age children and are usually passed through direct skin-to-skin
contact and from open cuts or scrapes. Staph bacteria are one of the most common causes of skin
infections in the United States. Most skin infections can be easily treated without antibiotics if
identified early. However, if antibiotics are needed for treatment, MRSA is a type of staph that is
resistant to penicillin and other types of antibiotics. Identifying MRSA infections can be difficult
because they look like other skin infections. If your child has a skin infection, see your health care
provider for evaluation and treatment.
This is a good time to discuss with your children the importance of good hygiene, especially frequent
hand washing. Washing with ordinary soap and water is the easiest way to prevent many kinds of
infections. Skin infections should be kept covered with a dry bandage at all times to prevent spreading
to others.
We take the health and safety of your children very seriously. All necessary precautions are taken to
prevent the spread of this, and other infections, in the school. If clean-up is necessary, detergent-based
cleaners approved by the Environmental Protection Agency are used to disinfect any surfaces or items
that may have been in contact with poorly covered or uncovered skin infections.

Recientemente los medios informativos han aumentado su atención acerca de las infecciones de la piel
en la escuela, especialmente las causadas por Infección por Estafilococo aureus, Resistente a Meticilina
(MRSA por sus siglas en inglés). Como respuesta a esta conciencia pública, estamos poniendo a su
disposición folletos publicados por los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades. Usted

Las infecciones de la piel son comunes en los niños en edad escolar y se transmiten generalmente por
contacto directo de una piel con otra y por una herida abierta o raspados. Las bacterias Estafilococo
(Staphylococcal por sus siglas en inglés) son una de las causas más comunes de infecciones de la piel en
los Estados Unidos. La mayoría de las infecciones de la piel pueden ser tratadas fácilmente sin
