EL PASADO SIMPLE
Formación:
El pasado simple en inglés se forma añadiendo la terminación –ed a los verbos
regulares; si los verbos son irregulares tienen su propia forma verbal que se
consulta en la lista de verbos irregulares.
Ejemplos:
I played football with my brother yesterday. Jugué al fútbol con mi hermano
ayer.
I saw Luis in the supermarket. Vi a Luis en el supermercado.
- Para la formación negativa e interrogativa del pasado simple se utiliza el
auxiliar didn’t (negativa) o did (interrogativa) seguido del verbo sin ninguna
terminación pueste ya el auxiliar nos indica que hablamos del pasado.
Ejemplos:
She didn’t watch the tennis match in my house. Ella no vio el partido de tenis en
mi casa.
Did you say Marcos to come to dinner tonight? ¿Le dijiste a Marcos que viniera
a cenar hoy?
Usos del Pasado Simple
. Para hablar de acciones que ocurrieron en el pasado y que ya están
finalizadas.
Ejemplos:
Real Madrid won the League yesterday. El Real Madrid ganó la Liga ayer.
Sonia didn’t go to school last week. Sonia no fue al colegio la semana pasada.
. Para hablar sobre una acción del pasado que se realizaba con frecuencia o
era habitual.

Ejemplo:
When I was a child I always did my homework. Cuando era pequeño siempre
hacía mis deberes.
. Cuando el pasado simple va acompañado del complemento AGO es porqué
se quiere especificar el período de tiempo transcurrido desde que sucedió la
acción.
Ejemplo:
Carlos came to Greece eight years ago. Carlos llegó a Grecia hace 8 años.
EL PASADO CONTINUO
Formación:
El pasado continuo se forma con el pasado simple del verbo to be
(WAS/WERE) seguido del verbo principal terminado en –ING.
Ejemplos:
She was studying for the exam when you called. Estaba estudiando para el
examen cuando llamaste.
They weren’t working when I arrived. No estaban trabajando cuando yo llegué.
Were you sleeping while I was painting? ¿Estabas durmiendo mientras yo
estaba pintando?
Usos del Pasado Continuo
. El uso principal del pasado continuo es hablar sobre una acción que se estaba
realizando en el pasado en un momento determinado.
Ejemplo:
I was playing when Dad arrived. Estaba jugando cuando papa llegó.
- Como vemos, el pasado continuo siempre necesita de un complemento bien
en pasado simple o bien en pasado continuo. Para ellos vamos a utilizar WHEN
y WHILE

Usos de los complementos WHEN y WHILE con el Pasado Continuo
. Utilizamos WHEN cuando tenemos una acción en Pasado Continuo y se
desarrolla otra acción en Pasado Simple que la interrumpe. La acción que va
después de WHEN es la que se usa en Pasado Simple como norma general.
Ejemplo:
Mary was sleeping on the sofa when someone knocked at the door. Mary
estaba durmiendo en el sofá cuando alguien llamó a la puerta.
Como vemos en el ejemplo, la acción del Pasado Continuo queda interrumpida
por la del Pasado Simple, son acciones que no se pueden realizar a la vez; una
acción interrumpe a otra.
. Utilizamos WHILE cuando las 2 acciones son en Pasado Continuo. Son
acciones simultáneas que se pueden realizar a la vez.
Ejemplo:
Henry was preparing dinner while Jill was putting the table. Henry estaba
preparando la cena mientras Jill estaba poniendo la mesa.
Como vemos son 2 acciones realizadas por 2 sujetos diferentes, con lo cual se
pueden realizar ambas acciones al mismo tiempo sin ningún problema.
