The OFF position is not generally used, and a switch in this position will remove that circuit from both the utility line and generator power. Circuit Breakers – Each Gen/Tran circuit has a push-to-reset circuit breaker that is active when the Switch is in the GEN position. In the UTIL position, each circuit is protected by the breaker in the load center. (NOTE: Models 30116V, 20216, and 30216 are shipped with 20-amp breakers in the 2-pole circuit positions, C+D and model 30310V is shipped with 20 amp breakers in the bottom four positions, D, E, I, and J. These circuits MUST be connected to 20 amp circuits in the house panel.) Wattmeters – Indicate the circuit loads, in watts, when the generator is supplying power. The left meter measures the load on circuits on the left side (A-B-C), and the right meter measures the load on right circuits (DEF). NOTE: If you are using a generator that produces 120 volts only, the combined wattage readings on both A and B meters (added together) must not exceed the continuous wattage rating of the generator. Handle Tie(s) – For 2-pole, 240 volt applications. On 6-circuit models, the handle tie must be used on C+D circuits ONLY. On 10circuit model 30310V, two handle ties are included for use with two 2-pole circuits, D+I and E+J, however, you can wire up to five 2pole circuits with additional handle ties. Models 15116V and 30116V can be hardwired for use with 120/240 volt applications. Handle ties can be ordered by calling 1-888-GEN-TRAN. Power Inlet – For fast, easy cord connection. Planning Your Transfer Switch Installation: 1. Determine the appliances, circuits or equipment you want to operate with generator power during a power outage, such as: • Sump Pump • Garage Door Opener • Refrigerator/Freezer • Computer, Fax and Printer • Microwave, Coffee Maker • Furnace Blower (gas/oil only) • Cordless Telephone • Well Pump • TV / Radio • Security System • Lights 2. 3. 4. 5. Determine the amps required for each appliance by reading the label on the appliance. Assign the circuit # in the load center and in the Gen/Tran transfer switch, matching the size of the circuit breaker in the load center to the circuit breaker in the transfer switch. Once you’ve determined which circuits you want to connect and the appropriate amperage, you will be ready to begin installing your Gen/Tran transfer switch. The location of your load center/electrical panel in your home or business will determine where the Gen/Tran transfer switch needs to be installed. Refer to the typical installation diagrams below. In addition to the transfer switch, you may need additional accessories to complete your transfer switch installation, such as a generator cord and power inlet box. A generator cord (sold separately) is needed to connect your generator to the Gen/Tran transfer switch or power inlet box. If your load center is in your garage, we recommend at least a 25-foot generator cord to reach from your generator outside the garage on the driveway to the transfer switch. NEVER run a generator in an enclosed area! If your load center is in a basement or interior room, you should install a power inlet box (sold separately) on the exterior of your house or building to avoid running the generator cord through a door or window. Transfer switch can be installed on either the left or right side of your electrical panel (also called load center). Hold the Gen/Tran transfer switch up to the wall about 18" from the center of the load center to ensure adequate room. Remove the cover of the load center. CAUTION: All wires are live inside load center! MAIN circuit breakers should be turned off to ensure safety. Remember, all wires on "line" side of main are still hot. 6. 7. Locate and remove a knockout (KO) in the bottom of the load center near the center, if possible. Use 3/4" KO for all models. Insert all wires from Gen/Tran transfer switch at end of flexible conduit through KO, and install connector securely. Anchor transfer switch to wall using the external feet. Do not overbend flexible conduit. 2 HARDWIRED/BASEMENT INSTALLATION: TYPICAL GARAGE INSTALLATION: Power Inlet Box 25 ft. Power Cord 10 ft. Power Cord ® Wiring your Gen/Tran Transfer Switch to the Load Center: IMPORTANT: Please read this entire procedure before beginning installation. WARNING: For SAFETY, turn OFF the MAIN circuit breaker in the load center BEFORE starting installation. Remember, the wiring ahead of the MAIN is HOT, even when the main circuit breaker is off. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. After determining which circuits you will want to use during an emergency, we suggest you start wiring the most critical circuits first, starting with "A." Assuming you want to designate your Furnace as "A," turn the Furnace circuit breaker OFF, and loosen the screw which secures this wire into the circuit breaker, and remove wire. On the Gen/Tran transfer switch, find the Blue and Red wires marked "A". Feed these two wires to the selected breaker (Furnace). Cut Red wire "A" to a convenient length, strip approximately 5/8", install in circuit breaker, and retighten screw. Take Blue lead "A", cut to convenient length to match up with wire removed from circuit breaker. Strip 5/8" and insert both wires into yellow wire connector. Twist on tightly, push wires back into side of box. Repeat steps 2 and 3 above to wire remaining circuits. A handle tie is installed on the 240 volt circuit(s) on some models. Locate the Red and Blue wires for the circuits with the handle tie. Turn off the 2-pole breaker in the load center, and remove wires as above. Feed wires from handle-tied switch(es) to the 2-pole breaker as above. Cut and strip 5/8". Insert red wires in breaker and tighten. Blue wires connected as above. If you have no 240-volt circuits in your load center, the handle tie(s) are not needed. Turn the handle-tied switch(es) to the GEN position. Loosen the two screws on the handle tie, remove the handle tie, and discard. These circuits can now be used as 1-pole circuits as you select. Once you have wired all circuits in the Gen/Tran switch, only the White neutral wire and Green ground wire remain. Insert the White neutral wire into an unused hole in the neutral bar in the load center and tighten. Then insert the Green ground wire into an unused hole in the ground bar, if existing, and tighten. If no ground bar exists, insert the Green wire into an unused hole in the neutral bar and tighten. 3 8. Replace the cover to the load center. Fill in the chart on the top of the Gen/Tran transfer switch to describe your emergency circuits and related circuit numbers in the load center. Turn ON all breakers in the load center, and turn all switches on the transfer switch to the UTIL position. Installation is now complete. Note on Hardwiring: These transfer switches may be "hardwired" to a power inlet box located remotely from the Gen/Tran transfer switch. If you are hardwiring the transfer switch to a remote power inlet box, remove the flanged power inlet from the face of the transfer switch, and install the closing plate provided to cover the hole. See the specification chart on page 1 for Power Inlet Box models. Wires inside the transfer switch should be connected to the Power Inlet Box as follows: • • • • Gen/Tran Black wire: To Power Inlet "X" or "Y" terminal Gen/Tran White wire: To Power Inlet Neutral "W" terminal Gen/Tran Red wire: To Power Inlet "X" or "Y" terminal Gen/Tran Green wire: To Power Inlet Ground "G" terminal Using your Gen/Tran® Transfer Switch: To ensure that your generator will always be ready when you need it, it is important to start and run your generator UNDER LOAD regularly and keep the tank filled with fresh fuel. Perform the following steps at least ONCE A MONTH to keep the generator properly "exercised." It is not necessary to turn off any circuits in the Main load center when supplying generator power with the Gen/Tran transfer switch, even when the utility power is operating normally. The 3-position switches prevent backfeeding generator power to the utility and, conversely, utility power to the generator. Transferring from Utility Power to Generator Power: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Plug in the female connector of the Power Cord to the Power Inlet Box OR Gen/Tran transfer switch. Be sure that all switches on the transfer switch are in the UTIL or OFF position. Insert the male plug of the Power Cord into the outlet on the generator. Start the generator outdoors, following the procedures described in the generator’s owner’s manual furnished by the manufacturer. Select the circuits to be powered by the generator by moving the corresponding Gen/Tran switches to the GEN position. Use only necessary household items when under generator power, and alternate use of larger loads like furnace motors, well pumps, freezers, etc. While in the GEN position, each circuit is limited by the Gen/Tran circuit breaker to a maximum shown on the circuit breaker. If you are running a 20 amp circuit through a 15 amp breaker in the transfer switch, you may have to turn off some appliances to avoid tripping this circuit breaker on the transfer switch. Test your circuits by using the wattmeters or determine wattage from that shown on each appliance. Make a note of any excessive loads which must be removed from a given circuit during generator operation. Transferring from Generator Power to Utility Power: 1. 2. 3. 4. Return all Gen/Tran switches (A-B-C etc.) to the UTIL position. Follow the procedures in the generator’s owner’s manual to shut down the generator. Unplug the power cord from the generator and then the power inlet. Allow generator to cool off, and store in a dry, secured location.
