The Aztecs were an advanced indigenous civilization that flourished in central Mexico from the fourteenth century until the Spanish Conquest in the sixteenth century. Originally a nomadic people, they had no permanent settlements until around 1325. According to legend, one day they saw an eagle perched on a cactus with a serpent in its beak. They interpreted this as a sign from their gods to settle in one place. This settlement became Tenochtitlán, which is now Mexico City. The Aztec legend told in this reading explains how corn was given to humanity.
