Introducción de especies exóticas II, la prosperidad o la ruina
Provedor de dados: 20
Autores: Baisre, J. A.

The present observation was aimed to evaluate the gross and histometric parameters of the vesicular glands of indigenous bulls.
Twenty-eight bulls of three age groups were selected from the local market: the pre pubertal group A (<1 year n=4), pubertal
group B (1.5-2.5 years, n=16) and post pubertal or adult group C (above 3 years, n=8). The weight, length (anterio-posterior),
width (latero-medial) and the thickness (dorso-ventral) of the both left and right vesicular glands were recorded separately after
slaughter of each animal. The left and right vesicular gland shows significantly different (p<0.01), in weight and length in every
group. Left vesicular glands were slightly higher than the right in all parameters. The lobules of the gland showed...

Fishing territoriality and diversity between the ethnic populations Ashaninka and Kaxinawá ,Breu
river, Brazil/Peru
Provedor de dados: 36
Autores: Amaral,Benedito Domingues do.
This study describes the diversity and the subsistence fishing territoriality of traditional populations of a village Ashaninka and
two Kaxinawá living at the margins of Breu River (Brasil/Peru). In general, samplings in the dwellings were carried out late in the
afternoon, as the fishermen arrived in the village. The data were analysed in an exploratory way through the index of pondered
dominance (ID%), by analysis of variance and by a correspondence analysis in order to determine the associations of the fish
species and the fishing spots between the villages of the Indigenous Reserve. The results of the analysis of variance demonstrated
that differences exist between the fish diversities of the catches. However, post-hoc tests only detected differences...

Genetic polymorphism and immune response to tuberculosis in indigenous populations: a brief review
Provedor de dados: 55
Autores: Longhi,Renata Maronna Praça; Zembrzuski,Verônica Marques; Basta,Paulo Cesar; Croda,Julio.
We systematically reviewed studies of the immune response to tuberculosis and the genetic polymorphisms associated with
Th1-or Th2-mediated cytokine expression in indigenous populations. A bibliographic search was performed on the Medline and
ISI databases and included studies published between January 1980 and October 2011. The search terms were tuberculosis,
American Indians, Amerindian, indigenous, Indians, native people, aboriginal, immun*, host immune, immune response,
cytokine*, polymorphism*, and gene. Regardless of their design, studies that evaluated immunoglobulin, cytokine levels and
genetic polymorphisms that altered cytokine expression were included. Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria. The majority of
studies were performed in Latin...

Characteristics of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts exhibiting rough colonies and pseudohyphal
morphology with respect to alcoholic fermentation
Provedor de dados: 58
Autores: Reis,Vanda Renata; Bassi,Ana Paula Guarnieri; Silva,Jessica Carolina Gomes da; Ceccato-Antonini,Sandra Regina.
Among the native yeasts found in alcoholic fermentation, rough colonies associated with pseudohyphal morphology belonging to
the species Saccharomyces cerevisiae are very common and undesirable during the process. The aim of this work was to perform
morphological and physiological characterisations of S. cerevisiae strains that exhibited rough and smooth colonies in an attempt
to identify alternatives that could contribute to the management of rough colony yeasts in alcoholic fermentation. Characterisation
tests for invasiveness in Agar medium, killer activity, flocculation and fermentative capacity were performed on 22 strains (11
rough and 11 smooth colonies). The effects of acid treatment at different pH values on the growth of two strains ("52" -rough...

Application of Morphological Indices in the Assessment of Type and Function in Sheep
Provedor de dados: 77
Autores: Salako,A. E.
Live weight and eight body measurements records taken on 284 sheep comprising 226 West African Dwarf and 58 Yankasa sheep
were analysed. The sheep were extensively managed within the south west Nigeria. The aim was to achieve a preliminary
assessment of type and function from zoometrical indices produced from combinations of different morphometric scores. The
indices used were weight, height slope, length index, width slope, depth index, foreleg length balance and cumulative index. The
body measurements used were wither height, body length, hip length, hip width, rump height, foreleg length, chest width and
heart girth. The body measurements showed that the Yankasa is bigger than the WAD sheep. The measured parts are highly
correlated. Tested indices...

Learning soil classification with the Kayapó indians
Provedor de dados: 63
Autores: Cooper,Miguel; Teramoto,Edson Roberto; Vidal-Torrado,Pablo; Sparovek,Gerd.
The Kayapó Xicrin do Cateté (Xicrin) indigenous reserve is located within the Amazon forest in Pará (Brazil). The Xicrins have
developed a soil classification system that is incorporated in their language and culture. The etymology of their classification
system and its logical structure makes it similar and comparable with modern soil classification. The etymology of the Xicrin's
language is based on the junction of radicals to form words for different soil names. The name of the soil is formed by the main
noun radical "puka", to which adjectives referring to soil morphological attributes are added. Modern classification systems are
also based on similar morphological variables, and analytical support for defining boundaries of chemical or physical soil...

Brazil, for samples between 1010 (for the oldest sample) and 570 years (for the most recent) as estimated through radiocarbon
dating. Maize cobs were morphologically analysed by using length, basal and apical diameters, largest diameter, number of rows,
number of grains per row, and number of grains per row per length parameters. The maize cob length presented increases through
time, allowing an increase on the number of seed per cob, but the size of seeds did not vary significantly. Starch present in the
reserve organs of the maize and cassava were analysed morphologically through Scanning Electron Microscopy, and compared

A recent focusing event involving the death of a moose in the Dome open-pit mine in the community of Timmins, in northern
Ontario, Canada has triggered the opening of a policy window related to the governance of resource extraction by indigenous
peoples. This event, combined with several other factors, including: (1) the high price of gold; (2) a mining company seeking to
demonstrate corporate social responsibility to repair its international reputation with indigenous peoples by supporting an
innovative, local Indigenous-led initiative; and (3) a new policy context, including Supreme Court of Canada decisions and
provisions in the updated Ontario Mining Act, that require meaningful consultation with indigenous peoples has led to the

Indigenous Ecological Knowledge (IEK) is deeply encoded in social processes. Our research shows that from an Indigenous
perspective, IEK is a way of living whose core aim is to sustain the healthy functioning of people and country through
relationships of reciprocity. However, IEK is often portrayed more prosaically as a body of knowledge about the environment. We
introduce a framework, called ngurra-kurlu, that enables appreciation of indigenous perspectives on IEK. The framework was
identified from the collaborative work of the authors with Warlpiri aboriginal elders in the Tanami Desert region of central
Australia. Ngurra-kurlu facilitates cross-cultural understanding by distilling, from a complex cultural system, the five distinct
conceptual categories...

ABSTRACT Approximately 90% of the population in the northwestern Amazonia is composed of indigenous people and their
healthcare is still a challenge. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of parasites in two indigenous ethnic
groups (Baré and Baniwa) in northwestern Amazonia. Stool samples from 270 individuals (199 Baniwa and 71 Baré) were
analyzed using Richie's method and the spontaneous sedimentation method. Statistical differences among the proportions of
infected individuals based on gender, age, and ethnicity were determined. All individuals were infected by protozoans or
helminths. The most frequent parasites in the indigenous people were Ascaris lumbricoides (73%), Entamoeba spp. (53%), and
Giardia intestinalis (48%). Protozoan...

This article aimed to describe the subsistence fisheries of traditional populations of three ethnic groups, one Ashaninka and two
Kaxinawá, lying on the banks of the River Breu. Initially, monitors were trained to fill logbooks with data from fisheries of the
villages during an annual cycle (august/1995 august/1996). Based on these data, it was realized an inventory of the most common
fish species caught as well as one about the fishing environment. The following results were obtained: i) Indians prefer to use
pools, locally known as "poços", for fishing; ii) the most common caught species are the "mandis" (35%, Pimelodidae), armored
catfishes (Loricariidae), specially Hypostomus sp. (25%), the "curimatá" (9%, Prochilodus sp.) and the "saburus" (8%,...

A Synthesis of Current Approaches to Traps Is Useful But Needs Rethinking for Indigenous
Disadvantage and Poverty Research

Indigenous disadvantage and poverty have persisted and are set to continue into the future. Although a large amount of work
describes the extent and nature of indigenous disadvantage and poverty, there is little evidence-based systems understanding of the
mechanisms that keep many indigenous people in their current dire state. In such a vacuum, policy makers are left to make
assumptions about the causal mechanisms. The persistence of inequality and poverty suffered by indigenous people is broadly
consistent with the existence of dynamical traps as described in both the resilience and development literature. We reviewed and
synthesized these bodies of literature on traps and found that although they give a good lead to a systemic and parsimonious way
of...

Indigenous Arctic and Subarctic communities currently are facing a myriad of social and environmental changes. In response to
these changes, studies concerning indigenous knowledge (IK) and climate change vulnerability, resiliency, and adaptation have
increased dramatically in recent years. Risks to lives and livelihoods are often the focus of adaptation research; however, the
cultural dimensions of climate change are equally important because cultural dimensions inform perceptions of risk.
Furthermore, many Arctic and Subarctic IK climate change studies document observations of change and knowledge of the elders
and older generations in a community, but few include the perspectives of the younger population. These observations by elders
and older...

We investigated vegetation dynamics in relation to livestock grazing as perceived by pastoral farmers in different regions of
Botswana. A structured questionnaire was used to collect farmers’ understanding of vegetation changes and causes
within three different grazing lands. The pastoral farmers’ description of dominant vegetation differed significantly
both at the local and district level, which suggests that rangelands consist of patches dominated by different grasses and woody
vegetation. Most pastoralists indicated that grass composition has undergone changes, and unpalatable grasses such as Aristida
congesta and Megaloprotachne albescens are increasing. The different factors perceived by pastoral farmers to cause changes in...

Archaeological Evidence for Resilience of Pacific Northwest Salmon Populations and the
Socioecological System over the last ~7,500 years
Provedor de dados: 7
Autores: Campbell, Sarah K.; Department of Anthropology, Western Washington University; [email protected]; Butler,
Virginia L.; Department of Anthropology, Portland State University; [email protected].
Archaeological data on the long history of interaction between indigenous people and salmon have rarely been applied to
conservation management. When joined with ethnohistoric records, archaeology provides an alternative conceptual view of the
potential for sustainable harvests and can suggest possible social mechanisms for managing human behavior. Review of the
~7,500-year-long fish bone record from two subregions of the Pacific Northwest shows remarkable stability in
salmon use. As major changes in the ecological and social system occurred over this lengthy period, persistence in the fishery is
not due simply to a lack of perturbation, but rather indicates resilience in the ecological–human system. Of several
factors possibly...

Recent studies have intended to quantify urban consumption and trade in Amazonian towns. However, little is still known about
the different ways in which bushmeat is made available in urban areas, including commercial and noncommercial flows, and how
those flows contribute to link forests to urban livelihoods. In this study we qualitatively describe the structure and functioning of
bushmeat flows in terms of species, catchment area, stakeholders involved, and the motivations for their activity in the main towns
of the Amazon trifrontier region between Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. We show that bushmeat trade to urban areas exists under
an organized but invisible commodity chain providing a source of income to about 195 persons. Bushmeat is made available...

Increased interest in indigenous ecological knowledge (IEK) has led to concern that it is vulnerable amidst social and ecological
change. In response, multiple authors have recommended the establishment of programs for the maintenance and revitalization of
IEK systems. However, few studies have analyzed the methods, opportunities, and challenges of these programs. This is a critical
gap, as IEK maintenance is challenging and will require layered and evidence-based solutions. We seek to build a foundation for
future approaches to IEK maintenance. First, we present a systematic literature review of IEK maintenance programs (n = 39) and
discuss the opportunities and challenges inherent in five broad groups of published approaches. Second, we use two case...

Over the centuries, local communities have shaped atypical rules to deal with the uncertainty of their environment. They have
developed complex prototypes for flexible overlapping institutions and arrangements to adapt their rules and uses to their
uncertain environment. Today, this indigenous way of flexibly institutionalizing access rules could provide blueprints for dealing
with uncertainty issues resulting from global change as well as designing practical guidelines for implementing resilient
management. However, transforming indigenous skills for developing institutional flexibility into operational management rules
that are appropriate in the current environmental and socioeconomic context is a huge challenge. However, communities could
easily...

Sustainability science promotes place-based resource management because natural processes vary among ecosystems. When local
science is limited, land managers may be forced to generalize from other ecosystems that function differently. One proposed
solution is to draw upon the traditional ecological knowledge that indigenous groups have accumulated through resource use.
Integrating traditional ecological knowledge with conventional resource management is difficult, especially when the two offer
competing explanations of local environments. Although resource managers may discount traditional ecological knowledge that
contradicts conventional resource management, we investigate the possibility that these disagreements can arise when nonlocal
resource...

Occurrence of Deferribacterales and Entomoplasmatales in the deep-sea Alvinocarid shrimp
Rimicaris exoculata gut
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Zbinden, Magali; Cambon-bonavita, Marie-anne.
The phylogenetic diversity of the gut microbial population of the hydrothermal shrimp Rimicaris exoculata was determined. The
presence of micro-organisms in the hindgut of the shrimp was determined, and their morphology illustrated for the first time by
transmission electron microscopy. DNA was extracted from the fore-, mid- and hindgut of shrimps collected at the Rainbow site,
at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and the sequences of the small-subunit rRNA (16S rDNA) were analyzed. Seven different bacterial
phylotypes were identified from the 90 clones screened. The sequences were affiliated to three major groups:
epsilon-Proteobacteria (48,8%), Entomoplasmatales (23.3%) and representatives of the new phylum Deferribacteres (26.6%).
These results show that the...

First record of the Asian copepod Pseudodiaptomus marinus Sato, 1913 (Copepoda: Calanoida:

The presence of the demersal Asian copepod Pseudodiaptomus marinus is reported for the first time in the southern bight of the
North Sea, in both Calais harbour and the coastal waters off Gravelines, France. This is the first record of P. marinus in the
Atlantic Ocean sector and the North Sea area. The species was collected in January and October 2010, and in January, February
and April 2011. The very low number of collected individuals (0.2 to 4.0 ind.m-3) and the capture of only two ovigerous females
and of a few numbers of copepodid CV stages suggest that the species survives and actually reproduces in both sites but does not
manage to develop an abundant population. The presence of P. marinus in Calais harbour and coastal waters of the southern...

beginning of the last century. In most of the countries the species established broadly, emphasizing its ability to adapt to a wide
range of environmental conditions. In Europe the Pacific oyster was massively introduced in the 1970s especially into France after
mass mortalities of the Portuguese oyster Crassostrea angulata affected by a viral disease. Good environmental conditions in some
French areas on the Atlantic coast induced successful recruitments in the following years. The population became...

The potential benefit of indigenous chicken (Gallus domesticus) production is still under-exploited in Kenya despite the efforts by
different stakeholders to mainstream this production system as a pathway to rural development. The production system is often
characterized by low input-low output productivity and low commercialization of the enterprise. This study which dwells on the
current management practices and challenges faced by smallholder indigenous chicken farmers was conducted to gain insights
into the underlying causes of production constraints. In Western Kenya women (76%) dominate the indigenous chicken
production system. The flock composition consists mainly of chicks, hens and pullets (80%) which reflects their retention for
production...

This study explored appropriate options for smallholders to maximise market price for Indigenous chicken products in rural and
urban markets in Western Kenya (Rongo, Homabay and Kisii in 2008 with results revealing that, the major participants along the
indigenous chicken supply chains are village brokers, distant traders, and urban assemblers, who eventually sell hotels, butchers
and households. Buyers preferred hens followed by cocks, and attached greater preference on weight and high market prices. The
price differential was un-uniform, with the larger differentials recorded between farmers and the middlemen. Turnover and losses
were however the key determinants of the selling price. The study thus recommends training of farmers on the market linkages...

Increasing attention to formal recognition of indigenous and community conserved areas (ICCAs) as part of national and/or global
protected area systems is generating novel encounters between the customary institutions through which indigenous peoples and
local communities manage these traditional estates and the bureaucratic institutions of protected area management planning.
Although management plans are widely considered to be important to effective management of protected areas, little guidance has
been available about how their form and content can effectively reflect the distinctive socio-cultural and political characteristics of
ICCAs. This gap has been particularly apparent in Australia where a trend to rapidly increased formal engagement of...
