El Pasado Simple (Simple Past) es una de las formas verbales del
pasado en inglés y seguramente la más usada. Para poder utilizar bien
esta forma, hay que saber de qué tipo de verbo se trata.
Existen dos grandes categorías de verbos en inglés: verbos
regulares, la gran mayoría, y verbos irregulares, recogidos
habitualmente en una lista. La pregunta habitual de los estudiantes es
como saber que verbo es regular y que verbo es irregular. Pues es
muy fácil. Aprender bien la lista de verbos irregulares, que es
un grupo limitado de verbos, y todos los demás son verbos regulares.

El Pasado Simple se utiliza para hablar de una acción concreta
que comenzó y acabó en el pasado. En este caso equivale al
pretérito indefinido español. Generalmente, lo usamos con adverbios
del tiempo como last year, yesterday, last night...
Ejemplos:
1. Tom stayed at home last night. (Tom se quedó en casa anoche.)
2. Kate worked last Saturday. (Kate trabajó el sábado pasado.)
3. I didn't go to the party yesterday. (No fui a la fiesta ayer.)
4. Did they walk to school this morning? (¿Fueron a la escuela esta
mañana?)

Se usa el pasado simple para un serie de acciones en el
pasado.
Ejemplos:
1. I received the good news and immediately called my
husband. (Recibí la buena noticia y llamé de inmediato a mi marido.)

and didn't return home until 10 at night. (Estudió durante una hora
por la mañana, trabajó toda la tarde y no regresó a casa hasta las 10
de la noche.)

También lo usamos para acciones repetidas o habituales en el
pasado, como se usa el pretérito imperfecto español.
Ejemplos:
1. We always traveled to Cancun for vacation when we were

2. He walked 5 kilometers every day to work. (Caminó 5 kilómetros
hasta el trabajo cada día.)

El Pasado Simple en los verbos irregulares

En las formas interrogativa y negativa, los verbos irregulares cumplen con las
mismas reglas que hemos dado para los verbos regulares.
I bought a car last year.
Did he go to New York last summer?
No, he didn’t go to New York?
Recuerda que en las preguntas y las frases negativas tienes que “recuperar” la
forma de infinitivo del verbo. En el caso de los verbos irregulares, esta forma no
es siempre “reconocible”, por lo tanto, no hay más remedio que aprender bien la
lista de verbos.
También hay que tener en cuenta que el verbo to be es el único que tiene forma
de singular y de plural (was, were) y que no necesita el auxiliar para la
pregunta o la negación:
I was happy last week. / You were happy last week. / They were happy last
week.
Were you happy last week?
I wasn’t happy last week. / You weren’t happy last week. / They weren’t happy
last week.
Nota: Hay muchos verbos irregulares en inglés. Desafortunadamente, no hay reglas fijadas para
formarlos. Si quieres conocer cuáles son los verbos irregulares sigue la Tabla No. 1 en la sección de
recursos.

1. Entrar a la liga del video sugerida.
2. Escuchar el video musical sin leer la letra de la canción en el ejercicio.
4. Lee la letra de canción, en esta ocasión sin el video, y escribe la forma
de Pasado Simple de los verbos entre paréntesis.
5. Escucha una vez más el video compara tus respuestas con la
retroalimentación.
