Why take our exams?

We have designed our exams to motivate
students of all levels and ages, giving them a
series of realistic goals and tangible rewards
for their achievements.
Hemos diseñado nuestros exámenes para que sirvan

We started holding music exams 120 years
ago, and since then have been providing music
students with assessments of an exceptionally
high standard, with recognised international
value. Our exams challenge young learners
to go further in their musical education, and
teach them the value of artistic achievement.
Comenzamos nuestra actividad hace 120 años y
desde entonces hemos ofrecido a los estudiantes
de música un sistema de evaluaciones que se rigen
por un estándar excepcionalmente alto, reconocido
a nivel internacional. Nuestros exámenes invitan a
los jóvenes a ir más allá en su educación musical,

Who are our exams for?
¿Para quién son nuestros exámenes?
ABRSM graded music exams are open to
musicians of all ages and standards, and
the vast majority of our exam candidates
are children. Many students will start with
the Prep Test and then work through all the
grades from 1 to 8, but we do not impose a set
pattern. A student may begin with the grade
that best suits their ability – and it does not
matter if a grade is ‘missed out’.
Los exámenes de nivel del ABRSM están abiertos a
músicos de todas las edades y conocimientos, aunque
una amplia mayoría de los candidatos a nuestros
exámenes son niños. Muchos estudiantes empiezan
con la Prueba Preparatoria y después empiezan a
trabajar en los distintos niveles, de primero a octavo,
pero no les imponemos un patrón establecido. Un
estudiante puede empezar en el curso que más se
adapta a su habilidad – sin importar si se ha “saltado”
algún curso.
What happens in an exam?
¿En qué consisten nuestros
exámenes?
Practical exams are available in over 35
subjects, and have four sections: set pieces,
scales, sight-reading and aural tests. This
structure gives candidates the opportunity
to demonstrate their skills through prepared
work and musicianship tests. Students may
use a translator in their exam if required.
Hay exámenes de práctica para más de 35
asignaturas, y estos se dividen en cuatro secciones:
piezas, escalas, lectura a primera vista y pruebas
de comprensión auditiva. Esta estructura da a los
candidatos la oportunidad de mostrar sus habilidades
a través de obras preparadas y pruebas de habilidad
musical. Los candidatos podrán disponer de un
traductor en el examen si fuera necesario.

Inspiring great music making
ABRSM exams offer a reliable method of evaluating
performance and progress whilst encouraging the
learning of many styles of music. Our syllabuses and
publications are developed to bring a broad range of
musical styles and genres together to make music
learning as varied and enjoyable as possible.

Celebrating achievement
All successful exam candidates receive an ABRSM
certificate to mark their accomplishment. Practical
graded exam candidates also receive a mark form
written by the examiner during the exam. This can be
used to help your child build on their strengths and
target their weaker areas. Both the mark form and the
certificate serve as a permanent celebration of great
achievement.
