COCKROACHES
Cockroaches are flattened, fast-running insects, which
are fond of warm, moist areas. They are most active
at night. Cockroaches are known to be disease
carriers when they crawl across contaminated surfaces
and then crawl on cooking or eating utensils or food
and contaminate them. Often, they leave a very
unpleasant odor on the materials they infest. There
are four kinds of roaches commonly found in
buildings:
The American Cockroach
The American Cockroach is the
largest of the usual house infesting
roaches, measuring 1-1/2 to 2 inches
long. They are reddish brown to
dark brown in color with wings completely covering
the body.
This roach is commonly found in
basements, particularly around pipes, and is an insect
commonly found living in sewer systems.
The Oriental Cockroach
The Oriental Cockroach is known in
some areas as the “Black Beetle” or
“Black Water Bug.” It is dark brown
to black in color and measures 1 to 11/4 inches long. Female roaches have only traces of
wings and appear sometimes to have no wings at all.
The males have short wings that do not cover the
entire back. Infestations of this cockroach are often
overlooked as they are rarely seen during the day.
Night activity is usually restricted to very damp, moist
places within the house. This roach has been found to
also inhabit sewer systems and will sometimes enter a
house through shower drains.
The German Cockroach
The German cockroach is most
common and is sometimes called the
Croton bug. The adults are light
brown and are marked on the back
between the head and the wings with two longitudinal
black strips. The body length is 1/2 to 5/8 inches.
They give birth to more young and complete their
growth in a shorter time than other cockroaches. The
German Cockroach usually is found near kitchen and
food areas.
Homeowner may see more young
cockroaches than adults.
The Brown Banded Cockroach
The Brown Banded Cockroach is
slightly smaller than the German
Cockroach and lacks the two dark
stripes behind the head. The wings
are banded with two brownish yellow stripes, brighter
in the young roaches and more colorful than the
German roach.
Prevention
Cockroaches frequently hide in bulk containers of
produce, drink and six-pack soda cartons. Storage
containers of old clothes and laundry may also support
cockroach infestations and should be inspected
periodically. Cockroaches may enter houses from the
outdoors, infested containers from other buildings, or
from adjoining homes or apartments. To prevent
entry, all cracks passing through floors or walls and
cracks leading to spaces behind baseboards and door
frames, should be filled with plaster, putty, or plastic
wood. Pay special attention to water and steam pipes
entering rooms. Sanitation is very important in roach
control, especially where food is being handled or
processed. Keep all food in containers with tight
fitting lids or refrigerated. In severe cases, remove all
possible hiding places, such as pictures, ceramic wall
decorations, calendars, scatter rugs, and draperies.
Dispose of all stored magazines and newspapers.
Control
Before applying insecticides, completely empty all
cupboards, drawers, closets, chests, stoves, etc.
Drawer, cupboard, and closet shelves should be wiped
clean before chemical treatment. A disinfectant soap
solution containing Lysol, Hexol, or Pinesol is quite
useful. Sticky, baited roach traps are very effective as
supplement or other control measures.

CUCARACHAS
Las cucarachas son insectos aplanados, que corren
rápido, los cuales se encuentran en áreas húmedas y
cálidas. Son más activos durante la noche.
Las
cucarachas son portadoras de enfermedades debido a que
caminan por superficies contaminadas y luego caminan
sobre los utensilios de comer, de cocina y sobre la
comida contaminándolos. A menudo dejan un olor
desagradable en los materiales que infestan. Existen
cuatro clases de cucarachas que se encuentran
comúnmente en los edificios:
La Cucaracha Americana
La Cucaracha Americana es la más
grande de las que usualmente
infestan las casas y miden de 1 ½ a
2 pulgadas de largo. Son de color
chocolate rojizo a chocolate oscuro y
tienen alas que cubren todo el cuerpo. Esta cucaracha se
encuentra comúnmente en sótanos, particularmente
alrededor de las pipas y vive en los sumideros y
desagües.
La Cucaracha Oriental
Esta cucaracha es conocida como el
“Back Beetle” (escarabajo negro) o
“Black water bug” (Bicho negro de
agua). Es de color chocolate marrón a
negro y mide 1 a 1 ½ pulgadas de largo. Las hembras
tienen solo trazos de alas y muchas veces parece que no
tiene alas. Los machos tienen alas cortas que no cubren
totalmente el dorso. Las infestaciones de estos insectos
muchas veces no se detectan debido a que raras veces se
ven de día. La actividad nocturna se limita usualmente a
lugares muy húmedos en la casa. Esta cucaracha
también habita en desagües y sumideros y generalmente
entran a la casa por los desagües de la ducha.
La Cucaracha Alemana
Esta cucaracha es la más común y
algunas veces es llamada “Crotón
bug”. Los adultos son de color
chocolate claro, tiene marcas en el
dorso ente la cabeza y las alas con
dos rayas longitudinales. Su cuerpo mide de ½ a 5/8
pulgadas. Paren mucha mas jóvenes y completan su
crecimiento en un periodo más corto que las otras
cucarachas.
La cucaracha alemana se encuentra
comúnmente relacionada con la cocina y arreas donde
hay comida. El dueño de la casa puede ver más
cucarachas jóvenes que adultas rondandos.
La Cucaracha “Brown Banded”
Es ligeramente más chica que la
cucaracha alemana y no tiene las dos
rayas oscuras detrás de la cabeza. Las
alas están marcadas con dos bandas
de color amarrillo achocolatado, más
brillante en las jóvenes y más coloridas que las de las
cucarachas alemanas.
Prevención
Las cucarachas se ocultan especialmente en recipientes
de bultos de vegetales y recipientes que contienen
bebidas y cajas de six pack de sodas. Recipientes para
guardar ropa vieja o sucia también contribuyen a la
ingestación de cucarachas y deben ser revisados
periódicamente. Las cucarachas pueden entrar a las
casas desde el exterior a través de recipientes infestados
traídos de otras casas o edificios o de casas adyacentes.
Para prevenir la entrada de estos insectos, todas las
rajaduras o grietas que haya en paredes, pisos, marcos de
puertas y ventanas deben ser repellados con yeso o
emplaste.
Ponga especial atención a las pipas que entran a los
cuartos. La limpieza es muy importante en el control de
las cucarachas, especialmente donde se manipulan y
procesan alimentos.
Mantenga los alimentos en
recipientes con tapas bien ajustadas o refrigerados. En
casos severos, remueva todos los lugares que sirvan de
escondite tales como cuadros, adornos de pared de
cerámica, calendarios, alfombras y cortinas. Disponga
de todos las revistas y periódicos acumulados.
Control
Antes de aplicar insecticidas, vacíe completamente todos
los mostradores, gavetas, closests, cajones, estufa, etc.
Todas las gavetas, cajones, y closets deberán ser
limpiados antes de aplicar tratamiento químico. Un
desinfectante como Lisol, Hexol, o Pinesol es útil. Las
trampas pegajosas de cebo, son muy efectivas como
complemento u otras medidas de control.
