Kindergarten Centers: Oral Language / Vocabulary Development
Center suggestions will change every three weeks to correlate with the Language Arts
themes and other content areas. Writing will be embedded into all center activities.
Required Centers: The following centers are required in all Kindergarten classrooms. Science Center
Theme: La familia
Essential Vocabulary:

Activity Suggestions: Display posters and books about Our Five
Senses, if available. Provide a variety of objects to see, hear, touch,
smell, and (optional) taste. NOTE: Be aware of classroom food
allergies! Find out how smell and taste work together (Science Flip
Chart p. 2). Explore kitchen scents (Science Flip Chart p.4). Have
children ask/answer questions as they explore objects together.
Writing Component: Draw a picture of foods that your family likes
to eat. Draw a picture that reminds you of one of the spices
(Science Flip Chart p. 2, 4). Children label their picture or dictate to
teacher. •

Activity Suggestions: Provide a variety of books about different
types of families (fiction and non-fiction). Encourage students to
locate high-frequency words in books (un, una) and on the
classroom Word Wall. Read or retell a story with a partner (Literacy
Flip Chart p.1 & 2). Read an Author (Reading Flip Chart p.5). Ask
children to make predictions and identify the setting in the books
they are reading. Writing Component: Copy the title of a favorite
book and draw a picture about a family in the story. Add a new
page to a book (Reading Flip Chart p. 4). ABC Center

Activity Suggestions: Using magnetic letters, letter cards, or foam
letters, children locate and sort letters introduced during phonemic
awareness activities (M and vowels) and match them with real
objects or picture cards that have M syllables . Introduce Letter
Match and Sound Sort activities (Phonics Flip Chart p.2,6). Use
High Frequency Word Cards and picture cards to create simple
sentences. Provide rhyming cards, posters, puzzles, and/or
rhyming books for children to explore. Writing Component: Letter
Mapping (Phonics Flip Chart p.5) or draw and label animal families
such as panda/cub, etc. Math Center

Activity Suggestions: Provide sequencing games, cards, or
puzzles to allow students to describe, compare, and order events.
Provide manipulatives that involve sequencing, such as stacking
blocks, stringing beads, connecting links, connecting cubes, etc.
Writing Component: Children write or draw representations to
show first, next, and last in a familiar routine or activity. Show how
people grow and change (Science Flip Chart p.6). Create class
mural showing pictures of moms, dads, pets, babies, etc. (using
magazine pictures or drawings made by children). Children sort
and classify the pictures.

Activity Suggestions:
Dramatize ways families cooperate together, such as going on a
picnic (refer to Un dίa de Picnic), setting table, preparing meals,
caring for babies, reading stories together, etc. Compare family
sizes (Social Studies Flip Chart p.1). Writing Component:
Children draw a picture to illustrate something that families enjoy
doing together. Write or dictate to describe the picture. Write or
draw a picture about how you have grown. Refer to La Silla De
Pedro to show how people grow and change. (Soc. Studies Flip
Chart p.3, 5, 6). Listening Center

Activity Suggestions: Have students listen to a story about
families, using listening station or computer (tumblebooks.com).
Remind students how to properly operate the equipment in this
center, if this will be an expectation in your classroom. Early in the
year, teacher will limit choices, adding more options as children are
ready. Writing Component: Draw a picture about your family.
Write, label or dictate to tell about family members or about
yourself (Writing Flip Chart p.5-6).
