We welcome you to el corazón de New Brunswick – the
French Street corridor, the heart of Latino New Brunswick
and a unique experience of Hub City.

Here, just a short walk from downtown New Brunswick,
Rutgers University, and the city’s two major hospitals, is
the main commercial district for New Brunswick’s large
Latino community. The area includes French Street (Route
27) as well as adjacent streets like Somerset Street,
Handy Street, and Joyce Kilmer Avenue.

The area has a rich history, with previous waves of
Hungarian and Polish immigrant families having
shaped the neighborhood. The legacy of the Hungarian
community in particular is still very alive along Somerset
Street. In the 21st century, Latino immigrants have
transformed what was once a declining corridor into a
vital local destination.

French Street and its surroundings boast over fifteen
authentic Mexican eateries, featuring many specialties
from the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Puebla, the
origin of many of the city’s immigrant families. Locals
and visitors can also choose from a variety of other Latin
American and Caribbean cuisines, from Peruvian to
Puerto Rican. And don’t forget about the pizza, chicken,
bakeries and more!

In Mexico, this day commemorates a military victory at the 1862 Battle of
Puebla. In the US, it marks an opportunity to celebrate Mexican culture more
broadly. The day is particularly significant to the large number of New Brunswick
residents from the Mexican state of Puebla. Many Mexican restaurants celebrate
the day, and there is often a community festival as well.

National Night Out – August 2, 2016
This national, annual event promotes community-police partnerships and
neighborhood camaraderie. There are multiple events hosted in New Brunswick;
in 2015, for the first time, the event was celebrated with a community health fair
at War Monument Park between French Street/Jersey Ave.

The most prominent immigrant group in New Brunswick comes from the

a famous, annual event in Oaxaca that features traditional dances from the
region’s many indigenous communities. A local celebration is hosted by Lazos
America Unida.
Hispanic Heritage Month – September 15 to October 15, 2016
What better time to experience the tastes, sights and sounds of Latin America
and the Caribbean? Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off with the independence
days of five Central American countries on September 15 and Mexico on
September 16. In 2015 New Brunswick marked the occasion with the inaugural

El grupo de inmigrantes más prominente de New Brunswick viene del estado
mexicano de Oaxaca, una región rica en cultura indígena. Gualeguezta es un
