Several hospitals in the United States, including Illinois, have reported confirmed
cases of a respiratory illness called Enterovirus D68. Cases have been reported in
children ranging in age from 6 weeks to 16 years. We wanted to provide you with
an overview of the virus.
Enterovirus D68 usually causes mild to severe respiratory illness. Symptoms include fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough, body aches, and difficulty breathing or
wheezing. The virus spreads from person to person when an infected person
coughs, sneezes, or touches contaminated surfaces. While there is no specific
treatment for Enterovirus D68, frequent hand-washing is the best way to prevent
illness. In an attempt to reduce the spread of germs in our school, classrooms,
washrooms, and drinking fountains are cleaned daily with a government approved
disinfectant. In addition, all students are required to wash their hands or use a
hand sanitizer prior to eating at school.
Please stress to your children the importance of practicing good hygiene, not sharing eating utensils or water bottles, and covering their mouth when they cough or
sneeze. If you suspect your child may have this virus, contact your physician.
Enterovirus D68
Varios hospitales en los Estados Unidos, incluyendo Illinois, han reportado casos
confirmados de la enfermedad respiratoria llamada Enterovirus D68. Los casos
han sido reportados en los niños de edades 6 semanas a 16 años de edad. Queríamos proporcionarle información general sobre el virus.
Enterovirus D68 por lo general causa leve a grave enfermedad respiratoria. Los

Safety Drills
In an effort to make sure our students and faculty know what to do in case of an emergency, we plan several
practice drills during the school year. Drills include fire/school evacuation, severe weather, lockdown, and bus
evacuation drills. As a safety precaution during lockdown and severe weather drills, no one is allowed in or
out of the building and phones may not be answered. The safety of our students and staff is our number one
priority. Thank you for your cooperation.

7TH GRADE
In 7th grade Language Arts classes, students have just finished reading Among
the Hidden by Margaret Peterson-Haddix. Our focus for first quarter included citing
textual evidence, plot structure, literary elements, and narrative writing. During second
quarter, our focus will shift to non-fiction text features and structure, as well as
informational writing. Students will practice and apply these strategies while reading
Phineas Gage.
As part of our District initiative, students are learning and applying strategies from
Notice and Note. So far, we have studied Contrast and Contradictions, “AHA” Moments,
and Tough Questions.
Students will be taking a pre and post writing assessment each quarter. In
addition, they will take a reading assessment quarterly.
Students are required to read independently in class and at home. Please
encourage your child to read daily for a minimum of thirty minutes.
6TH GRADE
The sixth graders had a great start to the year! We began by
reading the novel The Skin I’m In and exploring the theme of selfesteem. We are continuing our learning with narrative writing before
we begin to work with different informational texts. Throughout the year
we will have fun learning new vocabulary words with the Flocabulary
program. We also have some exciting field trips planned!
