No doubt many will be anxious about the outbreak that is
receiving wide coverage in the press. The new strain of flu
virus is one that has mutated into a human strain,
probably by a cross-reaction between a swine flu and a
human flu virus. The new resulting strain is rather virulent,
with some 80 deaths having been reported in Mexico and
a few cases in the US and Australia – though, to date,
there have not been deaths (to my knowledge) in these
countries.
No hay duda que muchos están ansioso por la noticia que
más está recibiendo cobertura en estos momentos. El
nuevo brote viral de gripe que se ha m utad o al humano,
probablemente por la reacción de cruce entre el virus de
la gripe porcina y el virus humano. Este nuevo brote se ha
convertido virulento, con más de 80 decesos en México y
otros casos reportados en Norteamérica y Australia los
cuales, hasta la fecha, no se han reportado muertes (que
conozca).
I am in the Philippines, and Dr. Landless is in Geneva, but
I would like to advise the in-house team of some familiar
but important steps. The new virus is a N1H1 strains, and
an urgent vaccine p rod uction process has already
commenced. The previous flu injections you have received
will not be effective ag ainst this strain, so preventive
precautions become even more important.
Estoy en Filipinas y el Dr, Landless está en G inebra, no
obstante me gustaría advertir al equipo de casa de algunos
p asos, que aunque conocidos, son importantes. El nuevo
b rote viral se conoce como el N1H1, y el proceso d e
producir urgente una vacuna ya se ha iniciado. Las
vacunas q ue con antelación se han colocado no tienen
ninguna efectividad en contra de este brote, por lo tanto
las precauciones preventivas se convierten en un aspecto
muy importante.
Authorities feel that the infection is spread by aerosol
transmission, though this is a new strain and it is not really
known whether it will spread, human-to-human, with
efficiency. Time will tell. Coughing and sneezing are major
ways of polluting the air with tiny droplets that others can
inhale;
additionally,
one’s
hands
become
easily
contaminated from touching the nose, sneezing into them,
or coughing onto them.
Las autoridades sienten que la infección se transmite de
forma aérea, siendo que es un nuevo brote no se sabe con
certeza si éste se esparce eficientemente de humano a
humano. El tiempo nos lo dirá. La tos y el estornudo son
las formas más eficaces de contaminar el ambiente con las
minúsculas gotas que otros pueden inhalar, se le añade
nuestras manos las cuales fácilmente pueden estar
contaminadas al tocar la nariz, estornudar y/o toser sobre
ellas.
I would recommend the following:
1.
If you have respiratory symptoms, even minor ones,
stay home! The illness has a short incubation of a
couple of days, and it will soon become apparent
whether or not you have the “flu”. If at hom e for
symptoms, wear a mask and follow the suggestions
below.
Recomendaría lo siguiente:
1.
Si ya posee síntomas respiratorios, aun cuando éstos
sean menores, deberías quedarte en casa! La
enferm edad tiene un corto período de incubación y
los síntomas aprecerán rápidamente semejand o a
una “gripe”. Si estás en casa debido a los síntomas
colócate una mascarilla y sigue las sugerencias abajo
descritas.

Sé extremadamente vigilante y con frecuencia lávate
las manos. No es mala idea usar los jabones líquidos
con desinfectante de forma frecuente (ej. PURELL).
Utiliza pañuelo d esechable para limpiarte la nariz,
sugeriría que lo botes dentro d el inodoro, de esta
manera no exponemos a las personas que recogen el
aseo ya que sería un peligro potencial. Podrías
protegerte utilizando una máscara, pero no poseo
evidencias para respaldar tal recomendación.
Obviamente, cuando varias personas están utilizando

Be extremely vigilant and wash your hands
frequently. It’s not a bad idea to have hand sanitizer
on hand and to use it frequently. Should you need to
use a tissue to blow your nose, I would suggest
disposal of the tissue down the toilet, as leaving
tissues in waste bins for the cleaning staff to empty
only exposes them to potential hazard. It might
protect you to wear a mask, but I have no evidence
to support such a recommendation. Obviously, when
numbers of peop le wear masks, others become

reminded of the problem. A mask becomes
contaminated and needs careful disposal – and must
NOT be flushed!

un problema. Una máscara también se contamina y
eventualmente necesitará ser d esechada con sumo
cuid ado - ésta NO deberá ser descartada en el
inodoro (y/o compartida, deberán ser desechadas y
no lavadas).

Greet each other with a smile, but do not be shaking
hands with others at this time.

Saludense con una sonrisa, por los momentos no es
prudente saludarse con un apretón de manos (en
nuestros países, Venezuela y las Antillas, que
tenemos la costumbre de un beso o chasquido en la
mejilla sería muy prudente abstenernos).
4.
If eating in the GC Cafeteria, ensure that not only
you but ALL others use the alcohol sterilizer at the
cafeteria entrance, as ladle handles could be a point
of contact that could result in transmission of the
virus. Perhaps a friendly monitor could remind folk of
this need and ensure a steady supply of the alcohol.

Si estás comiendo en el restaurante de la AG
asegúrese que, no solamente usted sino TOD OS los
demás, están utilizando algún tipo de alcohol
esterilizante líquido el cual debería estar a la entrada,
los picaportes o perillas de las puertas podrían llegar
a ser ag entes transmisores del virus. Es posible
utilizar un monitor para que, con cortesía, nos
recuerde de la necesidad y asegurar un suministro
constante de alcohol.
5.
Congregating in large gatherings is a definite danger,
should there be a person infected in the group. I
suggest keeping one’s distance at this time, and
forgoing the usual hugging and ceremonial kissing
that is a part of our culture.

El congregarse en grandes reuniones definitivamente
se convierte en un peligro, si alguno de ellos está
contagiado. Sugeriría que, por estos días, se
mantenga la distancia y dejar para después los
abrazos y el ceremonial beso como parte de nuestra
cultura.
6.
For those who travel, these precautions are
extremely urgent. Travel to Mexico would seem to be
unwise at this time while the extent and severity of
the outbreak is being defined.

Should the outbreak prove more serious, we would have to
consider more serious recommendations about church
services, and work-at-home programs. Though, at the
moment, the outbreak is difficult to forecast, we will try to
advise you effectively. W hether the infection will prove
susceptible to Tamiflu or other antiviral preparations has
not yet been determined, but we will keep you posted.
Si el brote se convirtiera en algo de m ayor seriedad,
tendríamos que considerar recomendaciones más serias en
cuanto a nuestros cultos y programas de trabajos en casa.
Por los momentos el brote se hace d ifícil diagnosticar,
trataremos de recomendarles de forma efectiva. A la
pregunta si la infección es susceptible a T amiflu u otras
preparaciones anti-virales les puedo decir que no se ha
determinado aún, les mantendremos informados.
