ESTRUCTURA DE COORDINACIÓN
Institución Responsable principal:
Instituciones y Agentes participantes: UNDP will partner with the GEF Small Grants
Programme on delivery of project outcomes
RESUMEN DEL PROYECTO:
It is increasingly recognized that small communities are likely to be the most severely affected by
climate change impacts and yet are least equipped to cope and adapt. This pilot project is
designed to implement community-based projects that seek to enhance the resiliency of
communities, and/or the ecosystems on which they rely, to climate change impacts. It will
essentially create small-scale ‘project/policy laboratories’ and generate knowledge about how to
achieve adaptation at the local level.
Ten participating countries (Bangladesh, Bolivia, Guatemala, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Morocco,
Namibia, Niger, Samoa, and Vietnam) will each develop, plan and implement a portfolio of 8-20
community-level adaptation projects. In order to ensure cost-effectiveness, projects will be
implemented in areas that are particularly vulnerable to climate change including variability, and
where there is high potential to secure global environmental benefits in the context of climate
change. Lessons learned from community projects will then be leveraged to promote replication of
successful community practices, and integration of lessons learned into policies that promote
increased community adaptive capacity. This project will assist in responding to GEF’s internal
needs for concrete experience with local-scale climate change adaptation, as well as the growing
needs of countries for ground-level experience and clear policy lessons.
The objective of the CBA programme is to enhance the capacity of communities in the pilot
countries to adapt to climate change including variability.

FECHA DE INICIO (dd/mm/aaaa): 01/01/2008
DURACIÓN: Not clearly stated starting date, nor duration
PRESUPUESTO: 4,525M US$. Each country will support a portfolio of 8-20 projects
(approximately 125 project globally). Individual projects will receive up to $50,000 in GEF support
FUENTES DE FINANCIACIÓN: GEF. Under the Strategic Priority for Adaptation
OBJETIVO GENERAL: Projects will be community-driven and nationally strategic - aligned with
country programme strategies on key climate change adaptation priorities
Taking a natural resources management approach, the CBA project will build resilience to climate
impacts into resource-based livelihoods while generating global environmental benefits in GEF
focal areas
Projects will be nationally strategic and globally relevant, leveraging lessons learned from
community projects to inform national policy dialogues, while sharing best practices globally
