RESUMEN DEL PROYECTO:
The project is designed to assess the impact of climate variability at different temporal scales (from
seasonal/interannual, through decadal, to climate change) on food crops, livestock and forest
production.
Understanding the impacts of climate variability at these different time scales will assist the
agricultural community of Uruguay to improve the types of decisions that are pertinent at the
different temporal scales.
For example consideration of seasonal climate variability can help farmers to improve the
decisions for the immediate term (crop/cultivar selection, planting dates, input use, buy/sell cattle,
etc.). Longer-term climate variability (e.g., decadal scale) can assist farmers and planning
agencies to explore less vulnerable agricultural production systems (e.g., crop/pasture rotations,
new crop/pasture species).
The impact of climate variability at different temporal scales can also provide crucial information for
public and private institutions working in rural credit / rural insurance programs, and for government
planning agencies. Methods and approaches tested in this project can thereafter be applied to
similar projects in different countries of the LAC region and beyond.

OBJETIVO GENERAL: To characterize climate variability at different temporal scales, to assess
its impacts on food and forest production, and to explore responses that result in improved
planning and decision-making.
OBJETIVOS ESPECÍFICOS
Objetivo nº 1: Characterize climate variability (rainfall, temperatures, frost regime) at three
temporal scales: (a) interseasonal to interannual, (b) decadal, (c) multi-decadal.
