In his apostolic exhortation The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis calls the Church to embrace “a
missionary impulse capable of transforming everything” so that the Church’s customs, language &
structures are aimed at “evangelization of today’s world rather than self-preservation.” We will
reflect together on his exhortation as a call to action, involving genuine encounter with others,
effective engagement with the world, & a deep passion for evangelizing our culture with Gospel
values. During this Holy Year, we will also reflect on mercy as the very heart of the Gospel. To live the
joy of the Gospel, “the Church must be a place of mercy freely given, where everyone can feel
welcomed, loved, forgiven & encouraged to live the good life of the Gospel.”

THE RCIA: MOVING TO A YEAR-ROUND PROCESS

The Rizzos are parishioners of St. Isaac Jogues Parish in Marlton. They are the parents of four children,
one of whom has autism. They are contributors to CatholicMom.com writing a monthly blog on the
topic of special needs parenting & inclusion. David is the author of Faith, Family and Children With
Special Needs. Together, they are the authors of Spiritually Able: A Parent’s Guide to Teaching The
Faith to Children With Special Needs, & The Adaptive Eucharist Preparation Kit. Find them on their

This session will help those working in ministry with children to develop an understanding of the
reasons children might have a meltdown & how to respond appropriately to the child in the moment.
Participants will leave with new information about the physiology & neuroscience behind a meltdown
& some tools for helping to calm a child with a “hot sympathetic response system.” As a bonus, the
tools that work with children are also the tools that can help the adults manage their own stress. The
workshop will be interactive & experiential, with plenty of time for questions & answers.

Mickey Steinitz, MSW, LCSW is a clinical social worker at Catholic Charities providing counseling
services at St Joseph Pro-Cathedral School. For the last 15 years she has worked primarily with
traumatized children & their families using her extensive training in play therapy & trauma focused
counseling.
Sylvia C Loumeau, MSW, LCSW, a clinical social worker, is the Director of Clinical Services at Catholic
Charities. In addition to her training in family therapy, trauma, & domestic violence, she is yoga
teacher who seeks to bring healing to body, mind, & spirit through the use of mindfulness.

Sister Sandra De Masi, SSJ is a Sister of Saint Joseph of Chestnut Hill, PA. Sister has a BS in Education
from Chestnut Hill College, an MA in Liturgical Studies from the University of Notre Dame and a D.Min
from Catholic University in Washington. Sister Sandra served for 13 years as the Director of the Office
of Divine Worship in the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ & some 20 years as a member of the Board of
Directors of the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions. She is a consultant for RCL Benziger.
Sister Sandra serves as pastoral associate for liturgy at Saint Rose of Lima Parish, Short Hills, NJ.
SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION: A FAMILY AFFAIR
The sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, Reconciliation & Confirmation, when celebrated with children
& youth, can provide families with marvelous ways in which to connect faith with life in their homes.
In this session we will look at how to develop sacramental preparation programs for parents that
honor the rituals & traditions of the family & help to connect them with the liturgical life of the
Church.

PUTTING MERCY TO WORK
“Ephphatha!” – THE DEAF IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH
Common challenges will be discussed in this workshop to give participants a picture of what it was
and has been like for the Deaf not having a full access to the Sacraments and the Church Life. This
workshop will also discuss how in the past years dioceses in the USA and Canada have collaborated
and served with their Deaf brothers and sisters. This collaboration is an awesome sign of
“Ephphatha!” a word meaning “Be opened!”

Greg Coogan is the director of youth, young adult and campus ministries in the Diocese of Camden,
NJ. Greg enjoys walking with young people on their faith journey. He has received his Master of Arts
in Pastoral Studies with a focus on pastoral leadership from the Washington Theological Union in the
District of Columbia and ministered at the State University of New York at Buffalo for seven years.
Lois Dark is currently the Director of Campus Ministry at Stockton University in Pomona, NJ. She has
been in ministry with university students at Rowan and Stockton Universities since 2000. Lois
completed here certificate from the College of St. Elizabeth in Youth & Family Formation
THE WORD ALIVE: USING BIBLE MOVIES AS PRAYER MOMENTS FOR YOUTH
The focus in this session is how to use the power of Bible movies to visually teach lectio divina. Using
examples from classic movies, we will prayerfully tie together the visual with the actual word read
from your Bible. Then with these in mind we will look at how to apply this in our life as “missionary
apostles.” This is an experience of the Way-Truth-Life methodology of Blessed James Alberione.

PROMOTING PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY WITHIN THE HISPANIC COMMUNITIES
This talk, which will be a done in English and Spanish, will present my ethnographic research on the
Hispanic parish communities and how they organize social ministries within their own cultural
context. The talk will then offer suggestions regarding how traditional parish social ministry (following
the “Communities of Salt and Light” model) may engage this cultural context.

EMBRACING THE HEART OF OUR CATHOLIC IDENTITY
Since Vatican II, the call for us to become more ecumenical has helped us to recognize all that we
have in common with our sisters and brothers of other faiths. Although this has facilitated in bringing
the human family of God together in building the reign of God on earth, it has, also, left many
Catholics wondering “So, what makes us unique as Catholics?” “How do we identify ourselves as
Catholics?” This presentation will discuss some of the fundamental ways in which our Catholic
Identity is best expressed and how we might strengthen our capacity as a Church to be true to the
demands of the Gospel.
