Who Is Fr. David Herrera
I am sure some of you are wondering about who I am and about the approach I will take in ministry as I
become the pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Let me take this opportunity to share a little about my
identity, and what is unwritten/unsaid you will soon find out on your own as we encounter one another.
Some basic information: I was born May 18, 1062 and raised in Odessa, Texas: 51 years ago. I was
ordained to the priesthood on August 12, 1989. My first assignment was St. Joseph/St. Anthony/San Martin
in Odessa for 9 years. I then moved to Fort Stockton Catholic Community which included Sanderson,
Imperial and Coyanosa. After 6 years of this assignment I was given the unique opportunity to serve the
parish of Cofradia in the Diocese of San Pedro Sula in Honduras for 9 months. I then returned to the states
to serve the parish of St. Mary’s in San Angelo for 7 years.
What is most important to me in ministry is the Eucharist. If there is one thing I would want all parishioners
to do it would be: Fall in love with Eucharist. If you can do that as an individual, if we can do that as a
community, everything else will fall into place. The Eucharist is the summit of all life in the community. It
feeds us and sends into ministry. That is why I know “the Mass does not end. It must be lived on a daily
basis.”
When a new priest is assigned to a parish, many parishioners expect immediate changes. It happens often
and when it does, it forces the community to quickly adapt and adjust to “another” Priest and another style
of ministry. In my personal opinion it is the wrong approach for a new pastor to take. I believe the first task
of the new priest in approaching another parish is what John Taylor stated in his book The Primal Vision:
“Our first task…is to take off our shoes, for the place is holy. Else we find ourselves treading on people’s
dreams. More serious still we may forget that God was there before our arrival.” I believe my first
responsibility out of respect for you and the Oblates of Mary Immaculate will be to listen and learn from
YOU as a parish, for no doubt God is already present among you. As someone new among you, help see
that reality. In other words, no immediate changes will take place; however, after a reasonable amount of
time has passed, if in my vision there are some suggestions that might enhance the presence of God
among us and strengthen our spirituality, I will bring them the Parish/Financial Councils for discussion and
implementation. Simply stated: it is I who join your community of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and not the other
way around where you as a parish now join me in my style of ministry.
But there is one important thing you will need to know about me. I DO NOT work well with volunteers. In
fact, I would rather rid the Church of all volunteers and never again accept anyone who comes to volunteer
within the Church. My disposition towards that approach can be explained by examining the word
“Volunteer”. It conveys the thought that the person coming to volunteer is doing a favor by offering
him;/herself in some specific ministry. One does not do favors for God, nor does one do favors for the
Church or even the priests. As pastor, I will only accept those people who feel called by God to become
involved in ministry, I will only accept those people who are responding to God’s will in their lives to put into
practice their faith, whether that be a Catechist, Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Knight, Guadalupano/a,
Cursillista, etc. I take that approach because if a person does not fulfill his/her ministry within the Church,
then it is God who he/she has failed, not the priest, nor the people, but God Himself. A church which has all
ministers who feel called by God working in the mission of Church is stronger than one which is filled with
volunteers doing “favors” for God.
There will be other things you will find out about my identity, but until then, this a good start to know me as
Fr. David. I’m excited to join this parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and I look forward to what God has
planned for this new adventure He has places us all upon. God Bless you always and in all ways.
¿Quién es el Padre David Herrera?
Estoy seguro que algunos de ustedes se están preguntando quien soy yo y como me voy a acercar al
ministerio como el párroco de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Dejen me tomar esta oportunidad para
compartir un poco de mi identidad y lo que no está escrito o dicho venga a luz cuando los encontremos el
uno con el otro.
Información básica: Nací el 18 de mayo de 1962 y fui criado en Odessa, Texas; hace 51 años. Fui
ordenado al sacerdocio el 12 de agosto de 1989. Mi primera asignación fue en San José/San Antonio/San
Martín en Odessa por 9 años. Luego me mude a la Comunidad Católica de Fort Stockton que también
incluía Sanderson, Imperial y Coyanosa. Después de 6 años de esa asignación, me dieron la oportunidad
única de servir en la parroquia de Cofradia en la Diócesis de San Pedro Sula en Honduras por 9 meses.
Regrese y serví en la parroquia de Santa María en San Ángelo por 7 años.
Para mí lo más importante en el ministerio es la Eucaristía. Si ay una sola cosa que yo quisiera que todos
los feligreses hicieren seria: Enamórense con la Eucaristía. Si pueden hacer eso como individuos, como
comunidad, todo lo demás se cae en su lugar. La Eucaristía es el cumbre de la vida en la comunidad. Nos
alimenta y nos envía al ministerio. Es por eso que estoy seguro que “la Misa no termina. Debe ser vivida
cada día.”
Cuando un sacerdote nuevo es asignado a una parroquia, muchos feligreses esperan cambios inmediatos.
Sucede a menudo y cuando sucede la comunidad es forzada a adaptarse rápido y que se ajuste a “otro”
sacerdote y otro estilo de ministerio. En mi opinión personal esa no es la manera adecuada que debe tomar
un párroco nuevo. Creo que la primera tarea del nuevo sacerdote para acercarse a otra parroquia es lo que
John Taylor dice en su libro The Primal Vision: “Nuestra primera tarea…es de quitarnos los zapatos,
porque este lugar es santo. Si no los encontraremos pisando los sueños de otras personas. Más grave aún
es posible olvidar que Dios estaba allí antes de nuestra llegada.” Creo que mi primera responsabilidad por
respeto a ustedes y a los Misioneros Oblatos de María Inmaculada será de escuchar y aprender de
USTEDES como parroquia, por que sin duda Dios ya está presente en ustedes. Como alguien nuevo entre
ustedes, ayúdenme ver esa realidad. En otras palabras no se llevaran a cabo cambios inmediatos; sin
embargo una vez transcurrido un periodo de tiempo razonable, si en mi visión hay algunas sugerencias que
podrán mejorar la presencia de Dios entre nosotros y fortalecer nuestra espiritualidad, las presentare a los
concilios Pastoral y Financieros para discusión e implementación. En pocas palabras soy yo el que se une
a la comunidad de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y no al revés donde como parroquia ahora me
acompañan a mí en mi estilo de ministerio.
Pero hay una cosa importante que necesitan saber a cerca de mí. YO NO trabajo bien con voluntarios. De
hecho yo prefería librar la Iglesia de todos los voluntarios y nunca más aceptar a cualquiera que viene a ser
voluntario en la Iglesia. Mi disposición a ese enfoque se puede explicar examinando la palabra “Voluntario”.
Transmite la idea de que la persona que viene a ser voluntario está haciendo un favor al ofrecerse a sí
mismo en un ministerio específico. Uno no hace favores a Dios, ni puede uno hacer favores a la Iglesia o a
los sacerdotes. Como párroco, yo solo voy aceptar a las personas que se sientan llamadas por Dios a
participar en el ministerio, solo voy aceptar a las personas que responden a la voluntad de Dios en sus
vidas para poner en práctica su fe, ya sea un Catequista, Ministro Eucarístico, Lector, Caballero de Colon,
Guadalupano/a, Cursillista, etc. Llevo a cabo esta manera porque si una persona no cumple con su
ministerio entre la Iglesia, a Dios a quien han fallado no al sacerdote, no a la gente pero a Dios mismo. Una
Iglesia en cual todos sus ministros sienten ser llamados por Dios trabajando con la misión de la Iglesia es
más firme que en la cual está llena de voluntarios haciendo le “favores” a Dios.
Se darán cuenta de otras cosas de mi identidad, pero hasta entonces esta es una manera buena para
conocerme como el Padre David. Estoy entusiasmado al unirme a la parroquia de Nuestra Señora de
Guadalupe, y espero lo que Dios ha planeado en esta aventura nueve en cual Él los ha puesto. Que Dios
los bendiga siempre y en todos los sentidos.
