Little Jonnie was kneeling beside his bed
with his mother and grandmother and
softly saying his prayers, “Dear God, please bless
Mommy and Daddy and all the family and please
give me a good night’s sleep.”
Suddenly he looked up and shouted, “AND
DON’T FORGET TO GIVE ME BICYCLE FOR
MY BIRTHDAY!”
“There is no need to shout like that, Jonnie,” said
his mother. “God isn’t deaf.”
“No,” Jonnie whispered, “but Grandmas is.”

Let the children come to me; do not prevent them,
for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
— Mark 10:14
Gospel (Mark 10: 2 - 16)
The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, “Is it lawful for a husband to divorce
his wife?” They were testing him. He said to them in reply, “What did Moses
command you?” They replied, “Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of
divorce and dismiss her.” But Jesus told them, “Because of the hardness of your
hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God
made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and
mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one
flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” In the house the
disciples again questioned Jesus about this. He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries
another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she
commits adultery.” And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the
disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, “Let the children
come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you,
whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” Then he embraced them
and blessed them, placing his hands on them.
Brief commentary
The first part of today’s passage teaches about marriage, divorce, and adultery. While other
contemporary teachers allowed men to divorced their wives, Jesus taught that God’s intent from the
beginning was permanence. He reaffirmed this with the declaration that “what God has joined
together, no human being must separate.” The Old Testament commandment that a bill of divorce
given to a woman had the legitimacy of divorce itself is denied by Jesus. At the core of Mark’s text is
Jesus’ challenge to spouses to live in faithful union until death. The Gospel of Matthew, written a few
years later, includes an exception: “unless the marriage is unlawful.” (5:32; 19:9) Both Gospels reflect
the early church’s struggle with one of the most painful issues in today’s church and society: the
meaning of fidelity in marriage relationships.
Today’s reading
messages:
offers
three
significant
♦ Moses’ concession to divorce is repudiated by
Jesus.
♦ The original will of the Creator was that spouses
remain together.
♦ The disciples must live, like children, in total
dependence upon and obedience to the gospel.
For our shared or personal reflection:
After a brief pause for silent reflection share
your answers, ideas or feelings.
1. How seriously do I take the call to be faithful,
not only to my spouse, but also to all my
relationships? Explain.
2. Are there any issues regarding marriage or
divorce that I need to share with a priest,
spiritual friend,
pastoral counselor, etc? Why
not do it soon?

hacerlo ahora?
