The Easter Season

We are completing the season of Lent which will be followed by the Easter Triduum (from evening Mass on Holy Thursday to evening prayer on Easter Sunday).
After Easter we celebrate the most joyous season of our liturgical year, the Easter
season which lasts 50 days from Easter to Pentecost Sunday. It is the time of year
when we should especially sing Alleluia (meaning “praise the Lord”).
Why is the Easter season so joyous? We are celebrating that through the death
and resurrection of Jesus, the heavens have been opened to us and that we too, as
children of God reborn in baptism, have the hope of eternal happiness with God.
At the end of the season is Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was given to the apostles
and disciples of Jesus, changing them from frightened and timid to fearless. This
gift is given to us at Baptism and Confirmation. Thus, during the Easter season we
celebrate membership in Christ’s body (the Church), the hope of eternal life with
God, and the gift of the Holy Spirit. William Yeats in Easter 1916 said it very well:
He said, “All changed, changed utterly”. We celebrate that “all changed” during the
Easter Season. This is a cause for great joy, and so we are moved to praise God.
Saint Augustine, a 5th century bishop, said: “Because there are two periods of time
– the one that now is, beset with the trials and troubles of this life, and the other yet to
come, a life of everlasting serenity and joy – we are given two liturgical seasons, one before
Easter and the other after. The season before Easter signifies the troubles in which we live
here and now, while the time after Easter which we are celebrating at the present signifies
the happiness that will be ours in the future. What we commemorate before Easter is what
we experience in this life; what we celebrate after Easter points to something we do not
yet possess. This is why we keep the first season with fasting and prayer; but now the fast
is over and we devote the present season to praise. Such is the meaning of the Alleluia we
sing. . . . Now therefore, brethren, we urge you to praise God. That is what we are all te-

lling each other when we say Alleluia. You
say to your neighbor, “Praise the Lord!”
and he says the same to you. We are all
urging one another to praise the Lord, and
all thereby doing what each of us urges the
other to do. But see that your praise comes
from your whole being; in other words, see
that you praise God not with your lips and
voices alone, but with your minds, your
lives, and all your actions”.
Sing Alleluia because we are a “resurrection people,” changed utterly by the
life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

La Temporada Pascual

Estamos llegando al final de la temporada de Cuaresma que será culminada con el Triduo Pascual, empezando con la Misa vespertina del Jueves
Santo y terminando con la oración vespertina del Domingo de Resurrección. Después de ese domingo se celebra una de las temporadas de más
dicha en el año litúrgico: La temporada de Pascua que dura 50 días, desde el
domingo de Resurrección (Pascua) hasta el domingo de Pentecostés. Este
es el tiempo en el que debemos de cantar especialmente el Aleluya (Alabanza al Señor).
¿Porqué debe ser esta temporada de Pascua tan dichosa? Porque estamos
celebrando que a través de la muerte y resurrección de Jesús, la gloria se
ha abierto otra vez para nosotros y que, como hijos de Dios renacidos en el
Bautismo, tenemos la esperanza de la gloria eterna. Al final de esta temporada es Pentecostés, que es cuando el Espíritu Santo les fue dado a los
apóstoles y discípulos de Jesús, cambiándolos de ser tímidos y temerosos
a ser intrépidos y valientes. Ese mismo regalo se nos da a todos nosotros a
través del Bautismo y la Confirmación. Es entonces, que durante la temporada de Pascua, celebramos el que seamos parte del cuerpo de Cristo (su
Iglesia), la esperanza de la vida eterna con Dios, y el regalo del Espíritu
Santo. Williams Yates, en su libro “Pascua 1916”, menciona: “Todo cambió,
cambió totalmente”. Eso es lo que celebramos durante esta temporada de
Pascua, que todo cambió para nosotros. Esta también es una buena razón
para estar jubilosos, y por lo tanto nos mueve a alabar a Dios.
San Agustín, un obispo del siglo V, dijo: “Porque hay dos períodos del tiempo
– uno es en el que vivimos ahora, acosado por los problemas e imparcialidades de
esta vida, y el otro que vendrá, dándonos una vida llena de serenidad y dicha – se
nos ha dado también dos temporadas litúrgicas, la primera antes de la Resurrección y la segunda después de ésta. La temporada antes de la Resurrección significa
los problemas en los cuales vivimos aquí y ahora, mientras que el tiempo después
de la Resurrección es cuando celebramos la dicha que será nuestra en el futuro.
Lo que conmemoramos antes de la Resurrección es lo que experimentamos en esta
vida; lo que celebramos después de la Resurrección es algo que aún no poseemos.
Es por eso que la primera temporada está llena de abstinencia y oración, pero
ahora el ayuno se ha acabado y nos dedicamos en esta época a la alabanza. Este
es el verdadero significado del Aleluya que cantamos... Por lo tanto, hermanos, los
aliento a que alaben a Dios. Eso es lo que nos decimos los unos a los otros cuando
pronunciamos Aleluya. Tú le dices a tu vecino, “Alabanza al Señor” y el te repite
lo mismo. Todos nos alentamos a alabar al Señor, y es de esa manera también como
nos alentamos los unos a los otros. Pero asegúrense que su alabanza venga de todo
su ser; en otras palabras, asegúrense que alaben a Dios no sólo con sus labios y
voces sino con sus mentes, sus vidas, y todas sus acciones.”
Canten Aleluya porque somos “personas de resurrección”, cambiados totalmente por la vida, muerte y resurrección de Jesús.
Easter Message

Easter is no more about just
going to church than it is about
bunnies and baskets of colored
eggs and candy. It’s about a
personal experience of the lifechanging encounter with the
death and resurrection of Jesus
Christ, the only Son of God.
Virtually every priest or pastor will tell you that church
does matter, that it’s a key to developing a spiritual life.
But it’s not enough. It’s the Crucifixion and Resurrection
of Jesus that is the heart of Christianity, what makes it
alive today. This isn’t just something that happened thousands of years ago; it still happens today. It is a reality
that must be lived every day and everywhere … all those
times we are not in church.
Jesus died on Good Friday, when the world was dark
— the edge of despair seemed to enclose the hearts of all
humankind. But he rose in the early hours of that first

Easter. Suddenly, the tomb was empty, and
hearts began to fill with new life and great
promise.
The Son of God dying on a cross as a blood
offering for sins should resonate strongly with
the people of every era. It still should today,
because we don’t need a dead savior, we need a
living one.
In Journey to Easter by Pope Benedict XVI,
the Holy Father, writes: “We are dealing with the
God of the universe, the God who raised the dead,
the God whose power can’t be limited or defined
by nature because God created it.’’ God does want
us to obey him, but also to follow him. If we take the real
meaning of Easter into our hearts, it demands a response.
It should walk out the church door with us. It should not
be tossed out with the Easter leftovers, or hung in the closet and forgotten like a dress from an Easter long past.
Easter is the defeat of (spiritual) death, it is what ought
to keep us going from one day to the next.

“Cuarenta días y cuarenta noches
el Señor estuvo en el desierto”. El
desierto representa un lugar
solitario, lugar adecuado para el
encuentro personal. Es un espacio
que provoca una mirada tranquila
y serena a uno mismo y ascender
desde él hacia arriba. Este es el
ejercicio que hizo Jesús en el
desierto. Hizo un alto en su vida,
quizá retirándose del bullicio
de la ciudad, del bullicio de los
afanes de la vida, para encontrarse consigo mismo. El
desierto representó ocasión de intimidad con la vida, con
el mundo, y de encuentro con Dios. Sin embargo, todo
ese ejercicio supuso para Jesús un gran reto. El reto de
enfrentar la realidad del mal, representado en el Satanás
o el tentador, con el deseo y empeño de coordinar la vida
según la voluntad divina. Pero Jesús pudo vencer el mal
con el esfuerzo del bien y seguir cumpliendo la voluntad
del Padre. A esto es al que estamos siendo invitados. El tiempo de cuaresma, cuarenta días,
es un desierto espiritual, que nos permite
encaminarnos con serenidad a encontrarnos
con Jesús resucitado en su pascua, el día de
la resurrección. La cuaresma supone para
nosotros un tiempo de preparación. Los medios que nos ayudarán en esta
preparación, entre otras, serán el ayuno,
la limosna caritativa y la oración (de
agradecimiento y de arrepentimiento).
Queridos amigos, tenemos el propósito bien
marcado para la celebración de la pascua
del Señor, nuestro camino de cuaresma, aprovechemos
este tiempo para que un año más celebremos con mayor
fervor nuestro compromiso cristiano y practiquemos
nuestro cristianismo observando los medios que se nos
proporcionan en esta cuaresma. Jesús sea nuestro modelo
de preparación y maestro de fe.
¡Vivamos con gozo esta cuaresma!

Family Chalice Program

The Family Chalice Program was created with the objective of encouraging families to gather in prayer for an
increase in vocations. This program has been implemented at many parishes across the United States and was
brought to St Mark as an answer to the need to respond
to God’s call as it appears in Matthew
9:37-38: “The harvest
is abundant, but the
laborers are few, so ask
the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.”
The Family Chalice Program gives St. Mark
families a chance to pray for an incresase in
religious vocations.
Each Saturday or
Sunday a chalice and
an appropriate prayer
manual is presented
at Mass to a participating family. The

El Programa del Cáliz en Familia fue creado con el
objetivo de animar a las familias de nuestra parroquia a
reunirse para orar para incrementar las vocaciones religiosas. Este programa ha sido implementado en muchas
parroquias de los Estados Unidos y fue traído a San Marcos para responder al llamado de Dios que aparece en el
Evangelio de San Mateo 9,36-38 como “La cosecha es abundante pero son pocos los obreros. Por eso, rueguen al dueño de la
cosecha para que mande obreros a sus mies”. Orando juntos le
pedimos a Dios que incremente las vocaciones religiosas.
Cada sábado o domingo una familia que previamente se
registró en este programa, recibe el cáliz para llevárselo a
su hogar y ponerlo en un lugar muy especial y seguro. La
familia se reúne todos los días por una semana para orar
para que se incrementen las vocaciones. Este programa no
sólo sirve para rezar por un incremento en las vocaciones
sino también es una gran oportunidad para que las familias se reúnan creando un ambiente propicio y favorable
para platicar y fomentar las vocaciones en nuestros hijos.
El padre Ciro mencionó en un número anterior de esta
publicación: “El Programa del Cáliz en Familia permite a
nuestras familias disfrutar un momento con Dios y aunque
muestra parroquia ha sido bendecida con algunos de nuestros

newsletter: “The Family Chalice Program allows families
to enjoy a moment with God, and although we have been
blessed with having some of our parish members answering the vocation call, we need to continue praying for the
response to be even stronger.”
Our priests invite the entire community to participate
in this important program by completing the registration
forms located in the kiosk at the back of the church. The
completed forms may be placed in the collection basket or
dropped off at the church office. If you prefer to enroll by

St. Mark The Evangelist Parish Library

Do you know that St. Mark has a Library? It is located in the corner of 15th St. and Alma on the first floor. The Library owns a collection of religious, educational, inspirational and spiritual books and material to support the Catholic faith life of its members. The library currently has over 2500 books, over 400 videos/DVDs, 150 audio tapes/CDs for
adults and children in English and Spanish. Topics include self-awareness, theology, prayer, Christian life, catechism,
lives of saints and other biographies, moral theology, the sacraments, the Bible, Church practice and history, marriage, family life, parenting, grief and recovery, art, literature and fiction. To check
out materials, you must be registered in the library. Children may check out materials,
but their parents are responsible for the items. All materials can be checked out for a
period of up to two weeks. The library also participates in the Book Ministry Sale so
parishioners can purchase materials for it. Items can be donated “in honor of ” or “in
memory of ” someone and the library will place a bookplate in the item. Cash donations are always welcome, and will be applied toward new material. Given the current
economic situation of the pa-rish, the library needs volunteers to keep it open. We
invite you to participate in this effort. If you would like to volunteer, please contact

Biblioteca de la Parroquia de San Marcos

¿Sabías que San Marcos tiene una biblioteca? Esta se encuentra localizada en la esquina de la calle 15th y Alma, en
el primer piso. La biblioteca posee una colección de libros religiosos, educacionales, de inspiración y espirituales, así
como material de apoyo sobre la vida y la fe católica. Actualmente tiene más de 2500 libros, un poco más de 400 cintas
de video y DVD, 150 cintas de audio y CD para adultos y niños, tanto en inglés como en español. Los temas son muy
variados e incluyen temas de conocimiento propio, teología, oración, vida cristiana, catecismo, las vidas de los santos y
otras biografías, teología moral, los Sacramentos, la Biblia, práctica e historia de la iglesia, matrimonio, vida familiar,
como ser padres, dolor y recuperación, arte, literatura y ficción. Estos materiales se pueden llevar prestados a la casa
pero las personas deben de estar inscritos en la biblioteca. Los niños también podrán pedir prestado este material para
llevarse a casa, pero sus padres serán los responsables de los artículos. Todos los materiales podrán llevarse prestados
por un espacio de hasta dos semanas. La biblioteca también participa en la venta de libros sobre el Ministerio, así los
feligreses pueden comprar materiales. Se pueden donar libros “en honor a…” o “en memoria de…”, y la biblioteca
se encargará de poner una placa en el libro. Las donaciones en efectivo son siempre bienvenidas y serán usadas en la
compra de nuevo material. Debido a las condiciones económicas de la iglesia, la biblioteca no cuenta actualmente con
personal para mantenerla abierta, se necesitan voluntarios y nos gustaría invitarlos a participar para ayudarnos. Si le

STEWARDSHIP through the 2008 Parish
Fall Festival

The 2008 Parish Fall Festival was an incredible success in several ways! Most importantly, our parish family worked together as one team. All participated as we
planned and held our Festival. Each group significantly
contributed their time and talent to the success of our
“best ever” Festival.
As a result, the Festival profit was $50,000! Originally,
it was planned to share the profits with the school, Youth
Ministry and Hispanic Ministry. However, each of these
three groups decided to donate their share of the profits
to the Capital Campaign which is underway. Fr. Cliff, Fr.
Ciro, the Capital Campaign Committee and the Festival
Committee greatly appreciate the generosity of the school
community, Youth Ministry and our Hispanic community. This is a marvelous example of the effects of our stewardship efforts at St. Mark the Evangelist.
The major raffle winners were as follows: 1st prize
– Alessanda Bejarana, 2nd prize – Acela Paniagua and
3rd prize – Rocio Aguilar. In addition, the following also
won prizes from the raffle: Kenneth Leonce, Nancy Schumacher, Gabriel Hernandez, Oscar Armendariz, Edith
Ramirez and David Izabel.
The Festival Committee, Fr. Cliff and Fr. Ciro especially wish to thank the volunteers who did so much work
planning the Festival, purchasing supplies, setting up
the Festival and working on the day of the event. We also
would like to thank each and every one who contributed
in any way to the success of our Annual Fall Festival –
from those who contributed their time and talent so generously to those who supported us by buying tickets and
atten-ding this fun-filled event!
Our 2009 Parish Fall Festival will be held Saturday, October 17, 2009. It takes many hands and many talents to
have a Festival. Won’t you please consider joining in this
wonderful parish event as a volunteer in 2009? Please call

Mayordomía a través del Festival Parroquial de
San Marcos

El Festival Parroquial 2008 tuvo un suceso increíble
de varias maneras, pero la más importante es que todos
trabajamos unidos como un sólo equipo. Muchas familias
y miembros de la comunidad participaron, desde la planeación inicial hasta el último minuto del festival. Cada
grupo contribuyó de una manera muy significativa, con
tiempo y talento para este festival, el más exitoso de todos
los ce-lebrados hasta hoy.
El resultado final fue de una ganancia de $50,000, y
aunque el plan original era dividir esta ganancia entre la
escuela y el ministerio de jóvenes, ambos grupos decidieron donar su parte a la campaña de recaudación de capital
de la iglesia. El Padre Cliff, el Padre Ciro, el comité de recaudación, y el comité del festival agradecen este acto de
generosidad de la comunidad escolar y del ministerio de
jóvenes. Este es un ejemplo más de los efectos de nuestros
esfuerzos de mayordomía dentro de la iglesia de San Marcos el Evangelista.
Los ganadores de la rifa fueron: 1o premio -Alessanda
Bejarana, 2o premio -Acela Paniagua y 3o premio -Rocío

Got Catholicism?

Many Catholics are Catholic from the time of their
birth. They are raised in a Catholic household and, over
the course of time, they grow into a full understanding
of the wonders and responsibilities of being Catholic.
To them, the Mass and the seven sacraments seem an
ordinary, familiar part of their lives. However, every
year approximately 150,000 adults become Catholic in
the United States. Many of these adults are from other
Christian faiths, while a few come from a strictly secular
background. For those seeking to become Catholic, the
rich tradition and history of the Catholic Church is both
awe inspiring and imposing. To help them gain a fuller
understanding of the Catholic Church, there is a formal
training called the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
(RCIA). RCIA provides an environment of learning and
discernment where a potential candidate is able to study
the teachings of the Catholic Church and ultimately become accepted into the Church through the sacraments of
initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist).
The formation process of RCIA occurs over the time
span of one year, and involves four periods of discernment
and three formal rites. These are briefly described as: Period of Inquiry (also called pre-catechumenate) – This is a
time of introduction to the Gospel of Jesus Christ when
a potential Christian reflects on his or her own life with
respect to the values, teachings, and history of the Catholic Church. Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens – A
liturgical rite where those who wish to become Catholic
Christians publicly express their desire to follow the way of
Jesus. The Church accepts their intention and welcomes
them into the household of faith. Period of the Catechumenate – Catechumens celebrate the Liturgy of the Word at
Mass each Sunday with the whole parish community. After the homily, the catechumens and their sponsors leave
Mass to study and ponder the scriptures and teachings
of the Church. Enrollment of Names – In this liturgical
rite, celebrated on the first Sunday of Lent in the Diocese
cathedral, the Bishop formally acknowledges the readiness of the catechumens and calls them to the sacraments
of initiation. The catechumens respond by expressing
their desire for the sacraments. From this time on they
are called “the elect.” Period of Enlightenment- This time
of intense preparation usually coincides with Lent. The
elect, with the support of the parish community, focus on
conversion, scrutinize their lives in light of the Gospel,
and celebrate the presentations of the Creed and Lord’s
Prayer. Sacraments of Initiation– During the Easter Vigil
Mass, the elect become full members of the Body of Christ
and the Catholic Church through the celebration of the
sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
They are now known as “neophytes.” Period of Mystagogy
– During the fifty day season of Easter, neophytes ponder
the experience and meaning of the sacraments, and participate fully with the parish. Formation and teaching
continues for one year to help them become fully incorporated into the parish community and Catholic Church.
Each year, St. Mark has between 300 and 400 older children and adults who become Catholics through the RCIA
process. If you know of someone who would like to become Catholic, or you would like to help sponsor someone
becoming Catholic, call Debbie Betz in the Faith Formation Office at 972-423-4715. All are invited to the Easter
Vigil Mass to support our candidates during their sacraments of initiation into the Catholic Church.

¿Tienes Catolicismo?.

Muchos católicos son católicos desde el momento en
que nacen. Ellos viven y crecen en familias católicas, y
conforme el tiempo pasa, van entendiendo las maravillas
y responsabilidades de ser católico. Para ellos, la misa y
los sacramentos son una cosa normal y familiar, son parte
de sus vidas. Sin embargo, alrededor de 150,000 adultos se
convierten al catolicismo cada año en los Estados Unidos.
Muchos de estos adultos son de otras religiones, incluyendo de otras ramas del cristianismo, mientras solo unos
pocos son laicos, es decir no tienen religión alguna. Para
los que quieren llegar a ser católicos, la rica tradición e
historia de la iglesia católica es inspiradora e imponente.
Para ayudarles a obtener un mejor entendimiento de la
iglesia católica existe un proceso formal llamado Rito de
Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos (RICA) o RCIA por sus
siglas en ingles. RCIA provee con un ambiente de aprendizaje y formación de criterio donde los candidatos estudian las enseñanzas de la iglesia católica para llegar a ser
aceptados dentro de la misma a través de los sacramentos
de iniciación (Bautismo, Confirmación, y Eucaristía).
El proceso de formación RCIA requiere de un año de
preparación, dividido en cuatro periodos de formación y
tres de ritos formales. Estos periodos se conocen como:
“Período de Evangelización” (también conocido como Precatecúmeno) es el tiempo de iniciación hacia la palabra
de Jesucristo donde el candidato a ser católico reflexiona
acerca de su propia vida con respecto a los valores, enseñanzas, e historia de la iglesia católica. “Aceptación en la
Orden de Catecúmenos”, es el rito litúrgico donde aquellos
que quieren llegar a ser católicos cristianos, tienen que
expresar públicamente su deseo de seguir el camino de
Jesús. “Período de Catecumenado” donde los catecúmenos
celebran la liturgia de la palabra de Dios al asistir a la misa
dominical con el resto de la comunidad católica. Después
de la homilía, los catecúmenos y sus patrocinadores dejan
la misa para ir a estudiar y deliberar acerca de las escrituras y las enseñanzas de la iglesia. “Registro de los Nombres”
es el rito litúrgico celebrado el primer domingo de Cuaresma en la catedral diocesana donde el obispo reconoce
formalmente la buena disposición de los catecúmenos y
los llama a los sacramentos de iniciación. Los catecúmenos responden al expresar su deseo por los sacramentos.
A partir de este momento se les conoce a ellos como los
“elegidos”. “Período de Purificación e Iluminación” es un
tiempo intenso de preparación que normalmente coincide
con la Cuaresma. Los elegidos, con apoyo de la comunidad
parroquial, se enfocan en la conversión, examinando sus vi-
das bajo la luz del Evangelio, y celebran con el Credo y la
Oración del Señor. “Sacramentos de Iniciación”, durante la
Misa de Vigilia Pascual los elegidos llegan a ser miembros
completos del Cuerpo de Cristo y de la Iglesia Católica a
través de la celebración de los sacramentos del Bautismo,
Confirmación, y la Eucaristía. A los candidatos se les conoce ahora como “neófitos”. “Período de Mistagogia”, es el
período siguiente a los cincuenta días de la temporada de
Pascua, donde los nuevos iniciados reflexionan acerca de
la experiencia y el significado de los sacramentos, y participan plenamente con el resto de la comunidad. Su formación y enseñanza continúa por un año para ayudarles
a incorporarse plenamente a la comunidad parroquial y a
la iglesia católica.
Cada año, en nuestra parroquia de San Marcos cerca de

At the start of this new year, forty St. Mark women of all
ages and backgrounds attended the first Women’s CRHP
Renewal Weekend. The weekend involves two days and
one night of renewing mind, body, and spirit in a loving
and caring community environment. Sound like an advertisement? When you experience something really life
changing, you want to share it with everyone!
Each part of the day and night unfold as a multitude of
surprises that lead you to a deeper appreciation and understanding of your faith community. I left the Renewal
Weekend with my eyes, mind, and heart wide open. I now
experience each day with a fresh new Spirit and am grateful for God’s many blessings.
Some comments from past participants echo a similar
retreat experience- “A transformation that will continue
to strengthen you, your family, and everyone you meet”
“A tremendously inspiring spiritual experience,” “A
new beginning in my spiritual journey,” “I have been so
blessed with such an amazing group of women to call my
sisters.”
As I meet each week with my CRHP sisters (pronounced “chirp”), I am again renewed and energized by
their splendid company. In fellowship, we continue our

Al inicio de este año nuevo, cuarenta mujeres de todas
las edades y clases sociales de San Marcos se reunieron el
fin de semana para la primera reunión de “Cristo Renueva su Parroquia” para mujeres, conocido como CRHP (se
pronuncia “chirp”). El fin de semana implica dos días y
una noche de renovación de mente, cuerpo y espíritu en
una comunidad de amor y cariño. ¿Esto le suena como
un anuncio? En realidad lo es, pues cuando experimentas
algo que realmente cambia tu vida, ¡quieres compartirlo
con todos!
Todo el fin de semana se desarrolla con una multitud
de sorpresas que te guían hacia una profunda apreciación
y entendimiento de tu comunidad de fe. Deje el Retiro
con mis ojos, mente y corazón bien abiertos. Ahora experimento cada día con un espíritu fresco y nuevo y estoy
agradecida a Dios por tantas bendiciones.
Algunos comentarios de los antiguos participantes
hacen eco de una experiencia similar del retiro: “Una

Reflections of a Seminarian

I sometimes find it hard to believe that nearly eight years have passed since my days of training altar servers and
working in the sacristy at St. Mark. A lot has happened in my life over the course of my years in seminary. I have
experienced much joy, some sadness, a few things that knocked me off of my feet, and many, many things that have
stretched me far beyond my own capacities. Throughout all of these times, though, God has remained with me. Often,
it is difficult to find God in the midst of sadness and hardship, and I cannot say that there were never times in which
I have questioned God. Even in these times, however, my faith in Him and His plan for me has remained strong. It is
during these times that I recall the words of one of my favorite passages from Sacred Scripture: “Consider it all joy, my
brothers, when you encounter various trials, for you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. And let perseverance be perfect, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:2-4).
During the harder times of our lives it is not always immediately apparent to “see” what exactly God is doing with our
lives. The fact remains nonetheless: God is always with us, and He is our strength – the ultimate goodness and power

that carries us through
whatever difficulties we
experience. God is constantly forming us and
reshaping us in accord
with His divine will. He
uses the difficult times
to stretch us beyond that
of which we might think
ourselves capable and ultimately brings about a
greater good.

perseverance and trust in Christ’s promise to us: “Behold,
I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

As I prepare to be ordained to the diaconate in a matter
of months and ultimately to the priesthood in just over
a year, I find myself thanking God for the ways in which
He has challenged me and allowed me to grow throughout my life. It is nothing other than God Himself that has
given me the strength of perseverance in difficult times.
As time progresses it becomes easier to see God’s hand in
my past and easier to identify the good that has come out
of hard times. I pray that in my own ministry I am able to

Algunas veces me es difícil de creer que han pasado cerca de ocho años desde aquellos días en que trabajaba en la
sacristía de San Marcos y ayudaba a entrenar a los acólitos. También muchas cosas han pasado a lo largo de estos
años en el seminario. He experimentado muchas alegrías,
algunas tristezas, algunas cosas que no me esperaba, y algunas otras que me han llevado más allá de mis propias
capacidades. Sin embargo, a lo largo de todo este tiempo,
Dios ha estado conmigo. En algunas ocasiones es complicado encontrar a Dios en medio de la tristeza y sobre
todo en tiempos difíciles, y debo admitir que ha habido
ocasiones en que me he cuestionado acerca de Dios. Sin
embargo, aun en estos tiempos difíciles, mi fe en El y sus
planes para mí se han mantenido fuertes. Es en esos tiempos difíciles cuando más me acuerdo de uno de mis pasajes favoritos de las Sagradas Escrituras (Santiago 1:2-4):
“Hermanos, considérense afortunados cuando les toca soportar
toda clase de pruebas. Esta puesta a prueba de la fe desarrolla
la capacidad de soportar, y la capacidad de soportar debe llegar
a ser perfecta, si queremos ser perfectos, completos, sin que nos
falte nada”.
Durante los tiempos difíciles en nuestras vidas, no es
fácil ver qué es exactamente lo que Dios está haciendo
con nuestras vidas. Sin embargo, un hecho es muy claro:
Dios siempre está con nosotros, y El es nuestra fuerza
– es su poder y bondad suprema la que nos lleva a través
de esas experiencias difíciles. Dios está constantemente
formándonos de acuerdo con su voluntad divina. El usa
estos tiempos difíciles para llevarnos mas allá de lo que
nosotros creemos son nuestras capacidades, para alcanzar
un bien aun mayor.
Ahora que me preparo para recibir el diaconado en unos
meses y ser ordenado como sacerdote en un poco más de
un año, le doy gracias a Dios por los retos que El me ha
dado y que me han permitido crecer a lo largo de mi vida.
Es El lo que me ha dado fuerza y perseverancia en tiempos
difíciles. Conforme el tiempo pasa, es más sencillo ver su
mano en mi pasado y es más fácil identificar lo bueno que
ha salido de esos tiempos difíciles. Rezo para que en mi
ministerio yo sea capaz de transmitir la misma esperanza
que yo he recibido a través de mi propia perseverancia
y confianza en las promesa de Cristo para nosotros (San
Mateo 28:20): “Recuerden, Yo estoy con ustedes todos los días,
hasta el fin del mundo”.
