EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD
This second issue was decided at the Council of Nicea in 325, which
WORSHIP
decreed that Easter should be celebrated by all on the same Sunday,
ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
Year One (2014): Individuals transformed by encounters
with Jesus Christ
Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord
"They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where
they put him." Mary of Magdala, seeing the stone rolled away from
Christ's burial place, runs to tell the disciples what she thinks is bad
news. The grave is empty. Jesus' body must have been stolen. Clearly,
resurrection isn't on her radar. As it says at the end of the passage, "They
did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead."
Only later, when Mary saw Jesus again face-to-face, did she come to
understand what had actually happened.
We, of course, know that the empty tomb really means good news!
We know that the cross was not the end of the story, that Jesus conquered death, walked again amongst his followers, and ascended into
heaven where he reigns even now. Unlike the first Christians, we have
the testimony of history, the record of Scripture, and the benefit of tradition at our disposal. We have more reason to believe than Mary, Peter, or
John did on first seeing the tomb! We need not waste any time "running"
around like they did in search of the Savior. We know that Jesus is alive,
and that sin and death have met their match.
"Where, O death, is your victory?" we can now proclaim with St.
Paul. "Where, O death, is your sting?" (1 Cor 15:55). Jesus has won! He
is triumphant! This is the joy of Easter, based in fact and bolstered by
faith. And we are the heirs of this great joy. As we sing in the Easter
psalm, "This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad."
On this most glorious of holy days, as we gather to feast with friends and
family, let us be sure to recall the reason for our celebration: Christ is
risen! Truly he is risen! Alleluia!

Bob Klaer Memorial Communion Cups
Our Altar is enhanced this Easter with twelve new brass/gold communion cups, donated in loving memory of Bob Klaer. Bob was a founding
father of St. Augustine Church, and for many years, along with his wife
Chris, an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist. Bob’s funeral mass
was celebrated at St. Augustine’s on February 19, 2014—as he passed
over to God’s heavenly Banquet. There Jesus puts on the apron to serve
his faithful followers. Easter Eucharist, and every Eucharist, is our great
Thanksgiving Prayer with Christ to God our Father for being our Bread
of Life and Cup of Salvation. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God, to
Bob and Chris, and to all who share and serve the Eucharist so faithfully
and generously. It is right and just!
Deacon Corner: History of Easter: There is evidence that Christians
originally celebrated the resurrection of Christ every Sunday, with observances such as Scripture readings, psalms, the Eucharist, and a prohibition against kneeling in prayer. At some point in the first two centuries,
however, it became customary to celebrate the resurrection specially on
one day each year. Many of the religious observances of this celebration
were taken from the Jewish Passover.
The specific day on which the resurrection should be celebrated became
a major point of contention within the church. First, should it be on Jewish Passover no matter on what day that falls, or should it always fall on
a Sunday? It seems Christians in Asia took the former position, while
those everywhere else insisted on the latter. The eminent church fathers
Irenaeus and Polycarp were among the Asiatic Christians, and they
claimed the authority of St. John the Apostle for their position. Nevertheless, the church majority officially decided that Easter should always be
celebrated on a Sunday.
With this issue resolved, the next problem was to determine which Sunday to celebrate the resurrection. The Christians in Syria and Mesopotamia held their festival on the Sunday after the Jewish Passover (which
itself varied a great deal), but those in Alexandria and other regions held
it on the first Sunday after the spring equinox, without regard to the Passover.
paschal moon must not precede the spring equinox), and that a particular
church should determine the date of Easter and communicate it throughout the empire (probably Alexandria, with their skill in astronomical
calculations).
which Sunday shall be the first following the paschal moon (and the The
policy was adopted throughout the empire, but Rome adopted an 84-year
lunar cycle for determining the date, whereas Alexandria used a 19-year
cycle. Use of these different "paschal cycles" persists to this day and
contributes to the disparity between the eastern and western dates of
Easter.
Worship Corner: Extraordinary Ministers: Since the ordained ministers (bishops, priests, and deacons) are regarded as the ordinary ministers of Holy Communion, lay people who have been trained and commissioned for this ministry are referred to as extraordinary ministers of
Holy Communion. Part of the impetus for the beginning of this ministry
was the urging by the documents of Vatican II that all members of the
community receive Holy Communion under the forms of both bread and
wine. This necessitated more ministers for distribution to avoid taking
an undue amount of time for the communion rite. This also makes them
available to take Holy Communion to those who are sick or homebound.
The Worship Committee is offering several books for your reading
pleasure. The books are $3.00 each.

Meditation Before MASS by Romano Guardini
When we are invited to ‘lift up our hearts’ at Mass, we are asked at that
moment to lift up our whole self to the Father. Even though the entire
life of a Christian should be a constant raising of the mind and the heart
to the one and eternal God, the Mass is a more intense, more intentional
‘lifting up.’
The children are doing Great with learning their prayers. Keep it up
and add more to their list and/or learn some together as a family. Also,
read from the Bible with your children.

his faithful followers.
It is right and just!

quedar vacios. ¿Habías pensado esto? Las tumbas donde
yacen nuestros seres queridos y a dónde iremos nosotros
¡No
