THE SUMMER 2016 BACKPACK
PROGRAM
From June 6th through August 12th members of local organizations
will volunteer with the W&L Campus Kitchen to deliver food to
communities in need on a weekly basis.
St. Patrick’s volunteers are needed to transport food from Campus
Kitchen at 106 Lee St. to Mountain View Elementary School where
food will be distributed from 2:00 – 3:00 pm each Tuesday, starting
June 7th and continuing until August 9th.

Corpus Christi es uno de los días más importantes para los católicos, una expresión de nuestra fe en la
verdadera presencia de Cristo en el Santísimo Sacramento. Y a la vez esta celebración representa también
una manera de “mirar hacia afuera,” en el sentido de que debemos sacar la liturgia de dentro de las paredes
de la iglesia y llevarla a las calles de nuestro pueblo y a nuestras casas. Con toda nuestra diversidad nos
reunimos y celebramos nuestra unidad en el sagrado cuerpo y sangre de Nuestro Señor Jesús Cristo.
El Papa Urbano IV fue quien instituyó la celebración de Corpus Christi—o sea, del Cuerpo de Cristo—en el
calendario de la iglesia universal y, cientos de años después, en 1849, el Papa Pio IX estableció el 1º de julio
como el día de la solemnidad de la Preciosísima Sangre del Señor. Solo después del Concilio Vaticano II fue
que se reunieron las dos solemnidades en una, en honor al Santísimo Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo. La Iglesia
Católica tiene también un día festivo en honor a la Eucaristía: la misa de la Última Cena del Señor el viernes
santo, pero el tono de esa celebración es diferente, pues que en la festividad de Corpus Christi caminamos en
la gloria del período pascual recién terminado, en la compañía del Señor Resucitado.
CHISPA (Comunidad religiosa Hispánica de San Patricio): Si Ud. es adulto y no ha recibido ninguna educación
religiosa desde la época de la escuela primaria o secundaria, o si Ud. tiene ganas de recordar y repasar lo que
aprendió hace algún tiempo, venga a asistir un encuentro de CHISPA para ver de qué se trata. Durante el mes
de mayo habrá una hoja en el nártex donde Ud. podrá apuntarse e indicar los días y horas que más le
convengan. CHISPA se va a reunir una vez por mes por 1 hora u hora y media, empezando en junio. En cada
reunión hablaremos de tópicos relacionados con los sacramentos de la Iglesia Católica, habrá tiempo para
preguntas, discusión y convivio, y disfrutaremos de refrescos y galletas. El día, hora y local de las reuniones
se anunciarán en junio, en el boletín de la parroquia.
Apply Today! Verso l’Alto Social Ministry Discipleship: The Catholic Diocese of Richmond’s Office of
Social Ministries (OSM) is excited to release the application for the Verso l’Alto 2016-2017 Social Ministry
Discipleship program. It is a yearlong formation program intended to prepare people to develop and enhance
their personal faith life and then go out and live the Gospel message by engaging their communities.
Participants will be able to administer to those who are the most vulnerable and disenfranchised in a Christlike manner. Catholics from the ages of 21-40 years of age are invited to consider applying to this program.

learn how to go deeper in your relationship with Christ, come to the InnerLife weekend at Our Lady of the
Angels Monastery in Crozet, west of Charlottesville. In a beautiful, rustic setting that fosters prayer, learn
more about how solitude and silence can deepen your prayer life. The retreat is led by Fr. Gregory Kandt,
pastor of Church of the Incarnation in Charlottesville. It will begin on Friday, June 17, at 5:30 p.m. and

The Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites are lay people inspired by the Holy Spirit to answer the call to
holiness through prayer, study, and apostolic works of charity. Their formation is founded on the writing and
teachings of the Carmelite Saints: St. Teresa of Jesus, St. John of the Cross, and St. Therese of Lisieux, under

Summer Camps at Roanoke Catholic School: Open to all families, summer camps run from June 13 to
July 29 and take place at Roanoke Catholic. Rates for RCS Families: $125 per half-day camp; $225 per fullday camp. Non-RCS Families: $140 per half-day camp; $240 per full-day camp. Camp information can be

Holy Doors: During this Year of Mercy the Diocese of Richmond invites you to take a pilgrimage to the Holy
Doors at the Cathedral of Sacred Heart, Richmond; and the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception,
Norfolk on Saturday, June 25, 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Join other pilgrims for a day of prayer and reflection
