JANUARY 31, 2016 2 OUR PASTOR’S PAGE The Challenge of a Merciful Church Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In the Nicene Creed, after we have affirmed our belief in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, we say: I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. These are called “The Four Marks of the Church.” The Church is one because it reflects the oneness of God, and Christ can only have one bride. The Church is holy because Christ has redeemed her with His own blood. The Church is catholic because she is composed of peoples, cultures and languages of the whole world. And the Church is apostolic because she has a hierarchy connected with the apostles themselves, and because her message is truth. During this “Year of Mercy,” it is important we appreciate this merciful gift of Christ, that is, the gift of the Catholic Church. Remember: Jesus did not leave us anything in writing. The New Testament (as well as the entire Bible) was written by men under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (CCC 81). Jesus did leave us a Church, though, for many reasons. One major reason is so that the message of the gospel, the truth of Jesus Christ, would be preserved intact and that pure doctrine would be protected from error. The voice of the Catholic Church is the voice of Christ to the world. Even if members (or leaders!) of the Church sin, the teaching of the Church remains true because of Christ’s promise (Mt 16:18). But the message of the Catholic Church is not always welcomed by our world. Many sophisticated secular people in the world like the Church’s teaching on social justice; they like that the Church directs aid to the poor, supports just conditions/wages for workers, supports that immigrants be treated with charity and compassion, and actively promotes healthcare reform. However, these people do not want to hear that abortion is an intrinsic evil, that artificial contraception is not healthcare, that forms of euthanasia are offenses against God; and that in God’s eyes there is no such thing as “gay marriage” regardless of the law of the land. Many of these people reject the Catholic Church’s teaching on personal morality. This Sunday’s gospel passage (Luke 4:21-30) is an example of the “pick & choose” attitude that even religious people sometimes can have towards Christ. The people of Nazareth like it when Christ speaks graciously, but when He challenges their personal morality, they want to throw Him off a cliff! It is easy to see this defensiveness in others, but do we see it in ourselves? Do I see the teachings of the Christ and the Church a threat to the way that I want to keep living my life? Am I always arguing that the Catholic Church needs to change, to “get with the times”? Does the Church need to change, or do I need to change? There is a fierce battle within all of us. Will we let pride and sin reign in our lives, or will we let divine mercy touch our hearts so that we can enthrone Christ as King of our lives? This is the question we must constantly ask ourselves during this “Year of Mercy.” Yours in Christ, Fr.
