ABOUT THE LECTURE
The annual Benjamin E. Mays Lecture
is intended to encourage the discussion
of issues facing urban educational
leaders, as well as honor the memory of
Dr. Mays and promote his philosophy of
excellence in the education of those
typically least well served by the larger
society.
GUEST SPEAKER:
Sonia Nieto
Professor Emerita of Language, Literacy and Culture,
University of Massachusetts, Amherst
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
American Educational Research Association Fellow Sonia
Nieto focuses her research on multicultural education,
teacher education and the education of Latinos, immigrants and other students of culturally and linguistically
diverse backgrounds. She has published extensively on
these subjects and the first edition of her book, “Affirming
Diversity,” is used widely in teacher education courses in
the U.S. and abroad.

Sonia Nieto, miembra de la American Educational Research
Association (Asociación estadounidense de investigación
educacional), enfoca su investigación en educación multicultural,
educación de profesores y educación de latinos, inmigrantes y de
otros estudiantes con diversa formación cultural y lingüística. Ha
publicado extensamente sobre estos temas y la primera edición
