National Demining Commission
Mine Risk Education:
In coordination with the Ministry of Education,
dissemination, education and risk prevention
activities were organized in schools of the affected
regions.
The aim is to raise awareness among children and
adults living in affected areas of the risks posed by
landmines to prevent the occurrence of accidents.
The campaign includes the presentation of a play
specially created for children, with a message of
self-awareness against the risk of land mines and
UXOs.
The Region of Arica and Parinacota (XV Region) is
located in the north of the country, at an approximate
distance of 2,000 kilometers from the capital of Chile. It
has an area of 16,873.30 km², equivalent to 2.2% of
the national territory.

According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), the
projected population of the Region will reach 243,149
inhabitants in 2016, with a density of 14.4 persons per
square kilometer.
The Region of Arica and Parinacota limits at the north
with the Republic of Peru, south with the Tarapacá
Region, east with the Republic of Bolivia and west with
the Pacific Ocean, ranging from 17° 30' to 21° 28'
south latitude, approximately.

On August 3rd, 2004 humanitarian demining
operations initiated in the XV Region of Arica
and Parinacota, with the lifting of 5 minefields
in the north sector of Chacalluta Airport, Arica.

In the XV Region, 89 mined areas existed, with
an approximate area of 14,477,055 m². These
mined areas are of mixed characteristics,
containing mostly anti-personnel mines. To
date 73 mined areas have been cleared,
representing 82.02% completion.
ACTIVITY
The State of Chile, through the National
Demining Commission, has committed to clear
existing minefields in our country. Despite the
unusual geography and adverse weather
conditions, progress to free Chile of mines is
ongoing.

Men and women of the Chilean Army and Navy,
as well as hired civilian personnel, work daily in
demining activities under unfavorable weather
conditions, such as the altitude in the north
and intense wind and cold at the southern end
of our country. They have made a voluntary
commitment with the State of Chile so that it
may meet its obligations under the Ottawa
Convention.

El Estado, a través de la Comisión Nacional de
Desminado, ha asumido el compromiso de
despejar campos minados existentes en nuestro
país, pese a lo especial de la geografía y a las
adversas condiciones climáticas, se avanza para
lograr un Chile sin minas.

En la XVª Región existían 89 áreas minadas, con
una superficie aproximada de 14.477.055
metros cuadrados. Estas áreas minadas son de
características mixtas, conteniendo en su
mayoría minas antipersonal; a la fecha se han
despejado 73 áreas minadas lo que representa
un avance del 82,02%.

Hombres y mujeres, pertenecientes al Ejército y
Armada de Chile y personal civil contratado,
trabajan día a día desminando los terrenos bajo
condiciones climáticas poco favorables; como la
altura en el norte, el viento y frío intenso en el
extremo sur de nuestro país. Ellos, han asumido
un compromiso en forma voluntaria con el Estado
de Chile, para cumplir con las obligaciones
adquiridas con la Convención de Ottawa.
