2 1st International Symposium on Afforestation of Pastures in Subtropical Regions Curitiba, Brasil, 8 a 10 octubre 2013 ENGLISH VERSION Between 8 and October 10, 2013, in the city of Curitiba, Brazil, was held the 1st International Symposium on Afforestation of Pastures in Subtropical Regions, which was organized by EMBRAPA in Brazil, and sponsored by various national and international organizations including IUFRO. In this symposium Dr. Alvaro Sotomayor participated on behalf of the Forest Institute of Chile and as Deputy IUFRO, Agroforestry Group, where in the opening indicated the importance of afforestation not only for the purpose of obtaining wood, but its contribution to climate change, protection of the environment, crops and animals, and in obtaining food for the population. In turn explain the objectives of IUFRO, and import promoting forestry research through a collaboration between research institutions associated with IUFRO. Figure: (left) Inauguration Symposium Ceremony; (right) Dr. Alvaro Sotomayor greetings on behalf of IUFRO anD INFOR. In this event involved more than 150 people including exhibitors, researchers and producers, exposing more than 21 papers on issues related to climate change and its effect on trees, crops and animals; afforestation in grassland and its challenges and opportunities; species used in silvopastoral systems in areas of frost. In addition, they discussed the prospects of extension and technical assistance to landowners interested in planting trees in pastures. Some conclusions of the symposium were: the need to seek and promote afforestation agroforestry and other alternatives, that ensure the sustainability of natural resources to climate change, especially on the large variations between low and high temperature, which originate frost or drought, and lack of rainfall that have caused droughts in some regions of Latin America. This has affected agricultural areas with frost, which caused great losses to farmers, as has happened in southern Brazil, northern Argentina and in the central zone of Chile in the last month. Furthermore, droughts have occurred in recent years in areas of 3 Chile, where the problem of water scarcity affects crops and rural populations. Finally, it was discussed the importance of incentives for afforestation, to promote afforestation or introduction of trees in the field through silvopastoral systems, and/or afforestation for protection, through extension mechanisms and technical assistance the population. A group of participants could visit various experiences with silvopastoral systems using different species of Eucalyptus sp., in combination with crops such as oats, and various forage species. In addition, researchers of EMBRAPA talked about research on the effect of silvopastoral systems in carbon sequestration, and reducing erosion. 4
