Bertrand lemoine In coming years, sustainable development will become a key challenge in the field of construction. Since the Earth Summit at Rio de Janeiro in 1992, this requirement for "development that meets the needs of the present without compromi sing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (Br undtl and r eport) has continued to grow. All the citizens of our planet have a duty to ensure, in each of their activities, that they minimise the use of natural resources, save energy and reduce pollut ion. Steel i s assur edly environmentalIy friendly, as this brochure illustrates. It offers numerous advantages to meet the escalating concerns within industrialised societies with regard to safeguarding of the environment. Here are twenty-three of them. MATERIAL NATURAL A NATURAL MATERIAL El acero, un material ecológico para el desarrollo sostenible El acero es seguro: un material noble y puro Steel is safe: majesty and purity Departamento de Geografía, Universidad de Villeneuve-d’Ascq. Arquitectos: Legendre, Desmaziéros y Larrondo. Geography Department, Villeneuve-d´Ascq University. Archotects: Legendre, Desmaziéros y Larrondo. Steel is a natural materi al . Its raw material, iron, is one of the most abundant elements on Earth and it also forms the core of our planet. It is present in large quantities in the earth's crust. It is al so one of the essenti al constituents of haemoglobin. During the production process, oxygen is separated from the iron. The result is a pure element: a homogeneous material that does not emit any environmentally harmful substance. MATERIAL NATURAL A NATURAL MATERIAL Es económico: ahorro energético It is economical: energy savings For many years, producers have pursued t he quest for energy savings throughout the st eel pro duct i on pro ce ss .A t t he beginning of the 1960's, steel production consumed almost 50% more energy than today. This energy comes either from coal, the most abundant fossil fuel in the world, or from electricity. Planta de producción. Production site. Rolling a steel coil. Simultaneously, CO2 emissions have been halved and dust discharge has been reduced by more than 90%. Trapped by filter installations, dust is almost entirely recyded. The continual improvement of the production process also includes a cutback in water consumption which, since 1960, has been reduced by approximately 50%. Moreouer, all residual gases are reused to produce energy. Almost half of world steel production now takes place in electric steel plants that operate exclusively with recycled scrap as feedstock and generate no CO2 emissions. MATERIAL NATURAL A NATURAL MATERIAL No produce residuos: proceso de subproductos It does not produce any waste: processing of by-products Esparciendo fertilizante – escoria de acero. Spreading of feriliser (steelshop slag). The by-products arising from steel production are all re-used. The slag resulting from t he production of the pig iron and the steel is employed, for example, as a high-value mineral material for hi ghway construct ion, as ballast, or for the manufacture of cement. The processing of this blast furnace slag into cement without any additional treatment obviates the extraction each year of 4.5 million tons of limestone, saves 350000 tons of coal and reduces CO2 emissions by 2 mi lli on to ns. All the major European steelmaking plants are now cert ifi ed to ISO 14001 . St eel per mits more efficient progress of the construction project since the majority of components are manufactured off-site. Erection times are short and minimise inconvenience for the neighbourhood. Users are able to occupy their building sooner. This time saving thus reduces investment costs and enables financial charges to be am o r t i se d m o r e qu i ck l y. Erection of a steel structure on site. Steel construction entails the asse mbly of se mi -fi ni shed products manufactured in a fac t o r y, i n a co n t r o l l ed enuironment, limiting open-air operations.Sites are therefore quieter, free of waste, clean, dry and dust-free. Products can be delivered at the required time for erect ion, t hus r educing the requirement for on-site storage. In city cent res, the adjacent publi c hi gh ways are le ss co ngeste d and t here is no dis r u ption t o t ra ffi c flow, significantly reducing noise. Steel's light weight allows smaller foundations that do not require the excavations that generate spoil and resultant lorry journeys. In certain cases, a few piles are sufficient to raise the building completely from the ground. Casa particular en Walddorfhäslach, Alemania. Arquitecto: Reinhold Andris. Steel´s high strength permits lightweight structures with long spans. Lightweight, transparent facades and roofs enable better management of light, facilitating the use of solar energy. St ee l' s n at ur al pro per t i es (ductility,strength/weight rati, hardness) confer a high level of resistance to unexpected stresses. Many countries are exposed to the risks of natural catastrophes such as earthquakes, and steel enables construction i n these vul ne rabl e r egi o ns w hi ls t safeguarding human lives. The preservation of structural stability following an earthquake also means less waste, less pollutant discharges, easier repairs and increased building life. BIENESTAR WEL L-BEING El acero, un material ecológico para el desarrollo sostenible El acero es magnéticamente neutro: neutralidad isoeléctrica Steel is magnetically neutral: isoelectric neutrality Propiedad privada en Munich, Alemania. Arquitectos: Klaus Ilg & Partner. Private house in Munich, Germany. Architects: Klaus Ilg & Partner. The steel employed in buildings as structural or cladding components do es no t exe rt any n egati ve inf1uence on personal wellbeing. The steels employed in construction have no i nherent electrical or magneti c fields. Their effect on en viro nme ntal e lectr ical and magnetic fields is insignificant. Residential buildings with a steel framework and concrete buildings wit h st eel reinforcement have existed for more than a century. Moreover, a steel framework enables simple provision of a path to the ground for the entire building, thus i ncre asin g the safet y of t he occupants. BIENESTAR WEL L-BEING Es duradero: longevidad y durabilidad It is enduring: longevity and durability Invernaderos en el Parc de la Téte-d’Or en Lyon, Francia. Today there are many ways of effectively protecting steel against corrosion, whether by means of a metallic coating or by means of paint (increasingly applied directly to sheets as an in-Iine process). Automotive bodywork, parti cularly exposed to bad weather; is t oday commomly guaranteed for ten years. Indoors, steel does not require protection. When well maintained, it lasts for a long time. This is the case with the Eiffel Tower and many other struct ures that are now more than one hundred years old. Arquitectos: Cepezod. Office building in Delft, Netherlands. Architects: Cepezod. Steel facilitates the implementation of external insulation solutions, which are highly beneficial wjth regard to the energy balance sheet. Its light weight also permits the construction of buildings with very low thermal inertia, a particularly advantageous solution in the case of bui ldings occupied dur ing daytime hours such as offices, where heat is in part generated by the occupants themselves, the lighting and the comput ers. It therefore permits the constructjon of buildings virtually without heating systems in which co mfort duri ng summer months is achieued by means of free cir cul ati on of ai r, as i n t radi ti onal tro pi cal buil dings. Arquitectos: Federico Soriano y Dolores Palacios. Convention Centre in Bilbao, Spain. Architects: Federico Soriano & Dolores Palacios. The principle of sound insulation achieved by the mass-springmass effect is the most suitable to intercept all frequencies. The incorporation of one or more plasterboards affixed to a light metal framework enables highly effective insulation of cinema audit oriums or of r ecording studios. The insert ion of an absorbent material into t he central void further increases its effectiveness. BIENESTAR WEL L-BEING Proporciona más espacio: mayor sensación de amplitud It gives more room: a greater sense of space Sala de exposiciones en Leipzig, Alemania. Arquitectos: Von Gorkan, Marg + Partner. Exhibition hall in Leipzig, Germany. Architects: Von Gorkan, Marg + Partner. Slender columns, slim floors and lightweight facades make it possible to gain precious space, which is measured in square or cubic metres. Steel columns can thus offer an additional usable surface area of som e 7 0 square me tre s i n a 1000square metre office suite. Areas are vi sually and spati all y l ess cluttered. It i s also possible to achieve an extra few decimetres in ceiling height, which increases air volume and enhances the sense of space, or ultimately to use the space saved to incorporate one or more ad di t i o n a l s t o r ey s w i t h ou t increasing the height of the building Las esbeltas columnas, suelos de poco espesor y fachadas ligeras de peso permiten ganar un espacio precioso tanto en metros cuadrados como en metros cúbicos. Steel mesh ceiling. St eel supports the architectural revi val throughout the worl d, enabling lightweight structures, visual transparency that promotes natural light and the influx of sunlight. It enables varied forms, readily accommodates interplay with other materials, lends itself to floating structures or to building envelopes with multiple colours or textures, smooth, undulating or wov en. I ts v is ual i m pa ct is con te mpo rar y, dy nam ic an d futuristic, whilst at the same time having respect for the architectural heritage, with which it combines to perfection, and takes its place with e as e i n t h e m o s t di v e r se environments. To use steel is to take a first step towards environmentally friendly construction. Steel structures create the necessary conditions for the use of materials selected on the basis of environmental criteria. When steel adopts the loadbearing role in a building, the choice for the finishing work can be made freely between various materials (glass, wood, bricks or insulating materials). ARQUITECTURA MODULAR MO DULAR A RCHITECTURE Es flexible: maleabilidad y adaptabilidad It is flexible: malleability and adaptability El acero ofrece numerosas ventajas para el diseño ecológico de viviendas u oficinas. S te el of f ers num ero us a dv a n t a g e s fo r the environmentally friendly design of residential or office buildings. Steel structures can often be easily enlarged or modified and t he r eb y a da pt ed t o n ew requirements. The structures of existing buildings can be altered an d brought up to curr ent standards. Even in residential buildings, steel enables the unde rt ak in g of add it i on s, proj ect i ng balco ni es , new stairwells. These modernisation works do not only make them more attractive, they also enable improvements to the quality of th e ame ni t i es as w el l as beneficial modi fications to or enlargement of the living space. When st eel buildi ngs are no longer required in their current location, they can be dismantled and re-erected elsewhere. This solution has proved itself with historic buildings such as the Baltard Market in Paris but also with modern structures such as car parks designed to provide t e m p o r ar y s o l u t i o n s t o requirements for parking spaces. The costs of dismantling and reerection are generally lower than those of new build. Finally, in certain cases steel components can be reused, for example sheet piling, in which moreover there is a rental market. MATERIAL RENOVABLE MATERIAL RENOVABLE El acero, un material ecológico para el desarrollo sostenible El acero se recicla el 100%: reciclable y reciclado Steel is 100% recyclable: recyclable and recycled Steel can be recycled indefinitely and in its entirety without losing any of its qualities. More than half of t he steel produced i n France and in the European Union and 40% of world steel production is thus obtained from recycl ed stee l. This r at e is constantly increasing year on year, thus safeguarding resources and the environment. Scrap metal is tomorrow's raw material deposits. Crushed steel, Sollac Atlantique plant at Dunkerque, France. MATERIAL RENOVABLE MATERIAL RENOVABLE Fácil de clasificar: la recuperación fácil It is easy to sort: recovery made easy Due to its magnetic properties, which are not found in any other material, steel is very easi ly sorted from waste and household refuse. Moreover, the selective collection of scrap enables its incorporation into the production processes in an optimum manner. This advantage makes it the most recycled material in the world. Centro de reciclado y de clasificación de acero. Steel sorting and recycling centre. Dismantling of Hammer Bridge in Düsseldorf, Germany. The useful life of any building or structure is not limitless. Whether carried out wi th a mechanical sh ov el , a sl edg eha mm er or explosives, demolition creates noise, dust, pollution and other adverse effects prejudicial to the local environment. These problems are avoided with steel buildings because they are easily dismantled, safely and cleanly, permitting selective decommissioning. The light weight o f t h e s t ru ct u r e s pr ev e nt s deterioration ofthe ground. When a building is demolished, the weight of materials to be removed is lower and landfill costs are reduced. MATERIAL RENOVABLE MATERIAL RENOVABLE Un balance ecológico positivo: desarrollo sostenible A positive ecological balance sheet: sustainable development Esculturas in situ de Eduardo Chillida. Life cycle analysis of a steel building in comparison with concrete reveals that a 41% reduct ion in water consumption is achieved in the c o n s t r u ct i o n p h as e . St e e l construction enables a halving of lorry movements to and from the site and results in 57% less inert waste. Throughout the life of the building, through first-class external insulation techniques, steel enables significant energy savings, ease of maintenance and adaptation. At the end of its life, it is easy to recycle. In total, the savings generated during the service life of the building (i.e. 92% of the energy consumed) contribute to a highly favourable ecological balance sheet for steel.
